I remember being bored one afternoon scrolling through movies on Netflix and saw this and said "why not" I wasn't really looking for anything more than just a pass time. How naive I was this movie absorbed me I became just as obsessed as the people involved in finding the zodiac killer. Great movie.

Great video essay. If you liked Zodiac, I highly recommend Bong Joon-ho's "Memories of Murder." It most DEFINITELY influenced Fincher for Zodiac.

having been a sub for awhile and fincher being my favorite filmmaker, you hit a point in the first few minutes that's been in my mind about this film being the mark where he developed his own style. while not taking away from seven and fight club(which are near perfect), this film I feel is like his personal masterpiece for the simple reason that the case is never offically sovled, a perfectionist's nightmare/nagging insipiration. keep up the amazing work dude!

I've seen only FIght Club and Social Network so far, so I might very well be wrong thanks to missing *boatloads* of information, but... from the way he said "I think people are perverts", ...it didn't sound condescending, or... negative, it was more like amused, exploratory fascination.

Impeccable analysis. I'll have to watch the film again and see if I can pick up anything new emotion wise. Zodiac has always been my favorite Fincher flick, and he's one of the top directors in terms of inspiration and storytelling admiration. Hopefully this video can be viewed by more people and Zodiac can be better understood has the brilliant piece of cinema that it is.

I disagree with Benjamin Button. It's not about romance, it's about death, which is consistent with what he likes to touch on. It's not one of his best, but it's still certainly good.

+Jesus Josh was just highlighting the fact that Zodiac, being a far superior movie in terms of technical quality, received zero Academy Award nominations while Benjamin Button received 13.

Benjamin Button is Finchers most personal film. He made this after the death of his father and this was his way to not only grieve, but also honor his father memory.

David Fincher, our modern day Kubrick. He's made many a masterpiece with only a few flawed films. I actually loved The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but The Social Network or Zodiac are definitely his best films

You're right. Edward Norton (Fight Club) and Jodie Foster (Panic Room) are probably the most likeable characters of all of Fincher's protagonists, and that's pretty sad. I would include Ben Affleck but I hate Ben Affleck.

I love the review of a great (and somewhat overlooked) movie. One thing you didn't mention was Robert Downey Jr's performance, which I though was fantastic. What do you guys think about the animal crackers and Dave Toschi? I noticed that throughout the entire film, he relies on his partner to provide the crackers, or when they talk shop at a diner, he either eats his partner's food or makes him pay for it. The only time he throws down is at the end of the story, when Graysmith gives him the whole exposition at their last meeting at the diner.

I found your review pretty interesting. It makes me want to see the film. The only thing is, does David Fincher want to be the next Erich Von Stroheim ? 70+ retakes of a scene seems to me to be excessive. I think you can use the emotional spontaneity that comes from earlier takes. The only justifying thing I can think of is that he wanted to wear the actors down, because their characters were worn down (and, I don't agree with that). But, if he tried this with actors like Brando, Sinatra, or Nicholson - They would leave the set after 3 takes.

I disagree on the "no one but Fincher" part at 1:00. I'd say the look from those screen shots could be from other movies. Those are just nice shots from the movies. What makes Fincher Fincher, really, is more the movement of his camera and the nihilistic themes he brings to his movies.

While I agree that Zodiac is a very uber Fincher movie. Nobody could have directed Se7en but David Fincher. Every single frame has so much attention to detail and so many creative and inventive shots that only he could have done it. Let's say the director of American History X has a crack at it, there would be too much medium zoom shots, incoherent action, and zero creativity in angles, etc, etc.

I honestly find the newer David Fincher movies; Social Network, Gone Girl, Dragon Tattoo to be void of the great Fincher qualities apart from very superficial stuff like lighting and filters. They are bland in comparison to the attention to detail that is in Se7en. Zodiac was like Fincher's last effort at making creative choices with the camera and in it's display, the use of stark yellows for example. Everything else has been bland to look at, empty/not lived in in comparison to Se7en and overally grey in it's display.
