Can we talking about Bruno being a homie? Bruno resembles his father. He's selfless, loves his family enough to separate himself from them and 'sacrifice' himself if that means that his family would be happy. Just like his father did. He was described as Seven foot frame by Camilio (shape-shifting boy) probably because he was a kid and Bruno just seemed tall to him. Plus after years of hearing bad stories about it, it probably elevated that image to about seven foot, towering, creepy man.

Its actually very subtle: her gift is the same as Abuela Alma's. She's connected to the house and family itself. That's why she can communicate with it, and why the house doesn't come back alive until SHE puts the doorknob in. Or, in other words, her door was the house's FRONT door!

Also for Isabela’s case, I think you missed her point of being stuck perfect. She’s constantly being put into high expectations into being this perfect, elegant, golden child and she feels pressured to please the people around her. She sees Mirabel as someone who’s free of expectations while she has to keep up with high expectations. In the song, she’s exploring her identity and goes beyond this perfect facade and is finally being true to herself.

Doesn’t help either that Mirabel kinda gives her crap for being the perfect one until she realizes how much she actually gave up for the family. Makes it not easier. I loved seeing her character. I related to her as this is exactly why my sister and I can’t get along.

yes! her relationship with mirabel is actually how jealous siblings end up when they grew up with someone like abuela and their family dynamic in general. her insulting mirabel and using mirabel's insecurities is shitty but that's the point. she was being shitty to mirabel just like how mirabel misunderstood her because she didn't have the courage to even understand her own self. she did realize what she was doing was wrong though and reconciled with mirabel (something a lot of siblings could only wish for)

This movie is very much for us Latinos, Abuela isn't a monster or evil in any way, she has real trauma from war, imperialism etc, the only way she copes is by making sure she never loses another loved one, and in typical fashion a lot of us would much rather fix our family than simply cut them off. She's a reflection of many of our parents and grandparents and I hate how so many people are reducing her to the "evil" character.

I love Abuela...I saw instantly that she wasn't a bad guy, she's just following a tradition and stand point she set up and trauma clouded the fact that her tradition and stands are toxic. Even when I saw Isabela, I didn't see her as annoying or an antagonist, because I've seen this trope before. She's a teen who's whole life is 'perfect' and trying so hard to keep that image. Hell, she wants approval so much that she's willing to lower her sister so that she can be more 'perfect'. They both needed to see that imperfections are perfect in life.

Ok but I love Isabela. Yes she’s a bit too harsh to her sister but I think it’s because she envy’s the fact that Mirabel can do so much wrong and be “imperfect” it not matter much whilst she has to always be perfect and be the family’s golden child. Which would include marrying someone you don’t want to marry for the sake of the family. I get that being perfect might seem like a dream but it just makes you miserable since you can’t truly be yourself and you can’t slip up once.

Abuela was never the villain. the “villain” is intergenerational trauma. Abuela suffered so much in her life that she was doing what she thought was best to protect her family. yes, she ended up hurting them more than helping them, but the point was not to demonize Abuela. It was that the cycles of passed-down trauma that are so normalized in Hispanic culture need to be broken by recognizing them and changing them.

I am from Colombia and there are several things to tell. The clothes are inspired by traditional Colombian clothing (each region has its style and the movie shows them) and the music has different styles for the same reason. The places that are shown in the film are places in Colombia, for example the house is located in the Valle del Cocora where you can see the wax palms and you can also see the coffee and banana plants, and the river refers to caño cristales also known as the river of 5 or 7 colors. These are all things you can only see in Colombia

The reconciliation scene made me cry. It's great to see someone who is old, proud and made sacrifices own up to their mistakes to someone they're supposed to be respected by, to someone who they had previously blamed for the things that went wrong. I don't see older people take responsibility often, especially in family. She did not ask forgiveness or say BUT or IF YOU HAD ONLY. She took sole responsibility and held her tongue on her pride. That's maturity to me.

My theory for Mirabel's power is hidden in symbolism throughout the movie. The only other person in the family that doesn't have magic is her abuela. I believe Mirabel didn't receive a door because her room is currently occupied. The reason the door lit up at the end was to symbolize the magic/miracle being restored and the family being mended. If anything I believe Mirabel's power is actually to take over as being the "holder of the miracle" like her abuela is before her. In the final door you see abuela behind Mirabel. In the rooms at the beginning Mirabel's room is directly across from the "courtyard". Honestly if they went that route it would make a lot of sense for Disney to make a sequel. I dunno, just a theory of mine.

18:27 I understand why you said you don't care about Abuela's past, but it's kind of (a bit) undermining what they're depicting, which is a very real issue Colombians faced AND still face, about people being internally displaced forcibly due to violence or other factors, and it's taken a toll or had repercussions on further generations with how matriarchs, like Abuela in the movie, tend to act and put pressure on the family in fear of experiencing the same again and losing everyone. It's intergenerational trauma. It's meant to be something to care about, although it's still understandable it must've been with the narrative and execution while some people feel that way and just see Abuela negatively, but I personally didn't.

I've been waiting for you to do this one. Surface Pressure literally broke me as an older sibling. Like having all of that pressure on you and having to internalize your fears, worries, and anxieties while putting on a mask of happiness is the toughest thing. As a teen I was like, give it all to me, I can handle it, don't worry I got this, I can get through anything because that's my job. What I love is that this movie has someone that everyone can relate to. Some of us feel massive amount of pressure, some of us strive for perfection because that's what's expected of us, some of us sacrifice everything for our families, and some of us don't know our place or feel like an outcast. This movie really shows that it's okay to just be a person, that feeling broken, used, upset, or overwhelmed is okay.

I saw another comment that mentioned a fascinating detail. All of the gifts before Mirabel's ceremony are things that Abuela wanted for the family based on the trauma of having lived through political stife: The ability to know what's going on and what's coming - Bruno and Dolores The ability to be strong against any obstacle - Luisa The ability to get people on your side and serve the community - Camilo and Isabela The ability to put out fires and always be able to grow things - Pepa and Isabela And the ability to heal - Julieta However, the first gift after Mirabel's ceremony was Antonio's, and he got a gift that she, rather than Abuela, would have wanted for him...a gift that he'd love based on his personality. So the keeper of the magic, which was Alma, but then transfered to Mirabel may actually influence the gifts.

Since I'm also the youngest I constantly heard "Oh Let the others do that, you're just in the way". Especially Isabela hit hard because my older sister is basically the same (except for the fact that she put expectations on me because of HER talents). The fact the he mentioned the Schuyler Sisters in the video makes sense to me now why Dolores likes Mariano, but Abuela wants Mariano be married to Isabela. I think it is because Lin-Manuel Miranda is the songwriter of all the songs, especially in the "We don't talk about Bruno" part.

My feelings are complicated. Abuela is not a villain, but she is certainly an antagonist, although the real "villain" of this story is the family's intergenerational trauma and inability to communicate effectively. There are some days where I feel like the kindness and understanding shown to Alma was so beautiful, and other days where I almost wish they hadn't forgiven her so easily. Alma had unaddressed trauma, and that led to her causing trauma to the younger generations of the family. She's not a bad person, but she wasn't kind to her family, and while that's not ignored within the context of the movie, it is often ignored, or amplified to extremes, in discussions of the movie.

I think part of what was causing the cracks in the house/their foundation was because they were shutting out Bruno. Their own family member.. a piece of the house, was missing. It took Mirabel to mend it. Mend them😉 they all needed to be together again and everyone else already said plenty about what Mirabel's gift actually is. She's like her Abuela

Abuela isn't evil. She's traumatized because of everything that she's been through, so she holds on too tight and expects soo much from them. And the expectation that is put on Isabela to be perfect is what keeps her from being closer to Mirabel. They envy each other.

She does get her power; her power, like the grandmother, is to be the foundation for the family. But like you said, the first foundation was built out of turmoil and fear. And trying to hold things together, the grandmother unintentionally was making it worse because of what the family was trying to live up to. Now they have a new foundation, one based on love and the strength of the family for everything they are. This is basically the same lesson as Frozen, they are just told in different ways: the non-magical person bring stability and love for the magical one who is crumbling because they're based on isolation and fear. Once they get the foundation from the person who loves them for who they are completely, their abilities, their lives, all get to working beautifully together. Mirabella is Anna.

I think in the end Mirabel did get a gift. Or she always had one. The love for her family that recreated the miracle. The same gift as her Abuela which created the miracle in the first place. Mirabels love holds the family and the house together, so her door is the front door.

Haven’t seen anyone else comment this so maybe I’m just imagining it but I reckon those few seconds where Mirabel is getting dressed to go save the Miracle (before she stops and ask herself…wait, how do I save a Miracle??) that little bit reminds me SO much of Mulan as she’s getting ready to leave home with her fathers armour. The music seems very similar and it shows her feet walking the floor similarly plus just the fortitude and determination the character shows too. Anyone else?

20:29 I don't think Mirabel is given a power in the end. When we finally see the flashback of the original miracle it seems like Alma in her grief enchants the candle and equally Mirabel enchants the front door. From these enchanted items they manifest (the house and) the gifts for their family members. So besides Mirabel's many talents (singing, parkouring, embroidering, and most importantly understanding and leading her family members) I think she has the same magical powers that Alma has while the others can only rely on them to share some of it. It is also in the song Dos Oruguitas (which is afaik given in the credits in the dubbed versions for non spanish speakers). When the song starts out it seems like Pedro and Alma are the oruguitas/caterpillars who have to part and transform into mariposas/butterflies just as Alma transformed herself into the leader and protector of the community of the Encanto. But in the end we see that Alma was still inside her cocoon protecting herself from the outside world and her past. Mirabel and Alma had to let go of trying to control/earning the respect of the other to transform. Then again I think that the house is not siply concious but also a time traveler. Think about it: it manifests around Alma and her children before it is properly built. BUT most importantly there is a collection of photographs of each (grand) child opening their door: the doors already looked the same when the kids got their gifts; only Camilo is a teen on the door and Antonio a child. Because they show them around the time when the house is destroyed and (re)build.

Oh and when you rewatch the movie: notice how Dolores is trying to break to Mirabel that Bruno hides inside the house. Her "issue" is that she tries to keep many of the secrets she knows but more importantly does not step up for herself. She told her about the rats first before bringing up Luisa and during We Don't Talk About Bruno she keeps telling them that she can hear Bruno. Also his shadow is seen ont he balcony during her bit (not sure if that's Camilo though) and while they lay the table during the song his hideout is directly behind the wall. The gifts can also interestingly be interpreted in two ways: Alma sees them as tools the community needs but Mirabel gives Antonio the plushy because he loves animals before the gift cements this character trait. So all the gifts can instead be seen as manfestastions of the character traits.

(Edit after watch) -the music is inspired in different colombian music. -this movie was originally tought to be centered in brazil (almost got it haha) -the person who voice mirabel is Rosa from Brooklyn 99. -also we have 2 headcannons. 1. Mirabel is an extension to the casita thats why she dont need a door, cause when they get a door, the room is not part of the casita. 2. The miracle candle is the spirit of the grandfather, thats why it got a buttlerfly and the problem with it was that abuela Alma was getting lost of who she is and what is important hurting the family, so the grandfather spirit was getting weak.
