Ladies, you have my great admiration.👍 I would still recommend litle diversify trees composition. Cherrytrees for late spring, mulberry and mirabelles for sommer, wild apple trees for autumn & oaks and chesnut for winter. I saw it in the pasture in Spain and Italy & there ist the best pork .I CROSS MY FINGERS FOR YOU

That's a great idea for starting an operation from scratch! Here at the ranch, these loblolly pine trees were planted years ago for other purposes. Now, as a regenerative farm, we saw the potential to raise pigs in these paddocks and make use of the land, infrastructure, and resources we had available. Thank you for your thoughtful comments!

Question: Are there predators in the paddock/areas, and if so, how do you deal with those predators? I enjoyed your video and wish I could do what you do. Age and land and family are my limitations.😔 The video was very thorough and informative. Thanks for the info.
@HeiferUSA
@HeiferUSA Жыл бұрын
The main predators we have around the ranch are coyotes, bob cats, domestic dogs and a few black bears. In all the years raising pigs out in the woods, we haven't had any issues with these predators, even when we only have the 1 strand poly wire. When we used to farrow on pasture a few years ago, we did have a few predator issues when the piglets were very young, more than likely a fox or aerial predator.

Do yall use the same water system for the younger pigs when they first get out to the pasture? Just wondering if they have any issues with reaching the water. I use a similar system except I use the big tubs and cut a hole out the side for the pigs to stick their head in but I really like this idea beings it allows multiple pigs to drink at once. Great video, currently trying to scale our pasture pig operation.

What about if I decided to breed those females for new off spring. I think you are only growing out pigs but I want to have both worlds raising my own pigs to be sold.
@HeiferUSA
@HeiferUSA Жыл бұрын
If you decided to pick the best females out of the batch, you could breed them around 8 months of age. I would suggest starting small and getting experience farrowing with the best gilts (female pigs who haven't given birth). For easier management and record-keeping, I would highly suggest keeping the growers and breeding group separate on the farm, since the groups would have different needs.

We're striving to increase rest periods for greater regeneration over time, but we can assure you these paddocks grow green and lush just a few weeks after the pigs move on.

We are considering expanding our small farm to include a couple of pigs utilizing paddock rotation. A friend who is also a Holistic doctor recommended against us raising pigs due to parasite concerns. I recognize nearly all farm animals can get parasites. Do you have any thoughts on parasites in pigs? Also, since we already have plenty of poultry electric fence netting, can we use that instead of the single stand wire like you use? We have a lot of ground predators including black bear which the poultry netting is very effective on. Thanks!
@rachelholdt6840
@rachelholdt6840 Жыл бұрын
I've seen several pig producers use netting instead of the single or double strand wire. Any animal may have parasites, however, the frequency of movement has a big impact on lessening parasite load. Hopefully someone can answer your question a bit more thoroughly.
@HeiferUSA
@HeiferUSA Жыл бұрын
Poultry netting would work just fine to keep the pigs in and predators out. We always encourage reusing supplies you already have on hand! If you're looking to purchase new supplies, hog net wire is similar to poultry netting, just shorter in height and different spacing. You're right that all farm animal get parasites; It really comes down to the resilience of your animals. Can they thrive while being a parasite host? Can you meet the needs of the animals and reduce the negative effects of parasites? The most common parasite for pigs is the round worm. These are large worms that can be easily seen if the pig passes them in their manure. They look similar to earth worms. With batches of 120-150 pigs, usually 1 or 2 pigs need dewormer in the 4 to 5 months they're at the ranch. If you're able to move the pigs to fresh paddocks once a week and keep them off of their manure, then the intensity of parasites should be very limited. Clean living space and frequent moves are the keys to keeping pigs happy and healthy!
