Moving A 42ft Houseboat up the River - Part 1: Lansing, IA to La Crosse, WI.

Recently I helped move a houseboat up to the Twin Cities from Iowa. This isn't one of my own boats, I was just along as the "experienced" river pilot, because a growing up on an island in Alaska plus owning 500 terrible boats probably adds up to river pilot experience, right?
This is part one, the first day of the journey. We started in Lansing Iowa and went up the Mississippi River to La Crosse Wisconsin. We had hoped to get a little farther, but ran into a few delays and mechanical issues on the first day.
The boat is a 42ft Gibson houseboat built in the 1980s. It has a fiberglass hull and twin Crusader 270 engines. We have yet to determine top speed, we kept it around 10mph since this is probably the longest and hardest the engines have worked in years.

It's ok if you've got something to do, or a lot of books to read! I used to do commercial fishing all summer, although we weren't really "out at sea". Also the internet wasn't as fast or all-pervasive back then, so I could get by with the occasional dial-up connection through an analog cell phone and tangle of adapters :-P

So far so good ! Lol. Did you work out your overheating situation ?
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts 3 жыл бұрын
The owner was going to have a mechanic look at it. Our best guess is the Starboard engine just runs a little hotter because it's 35 years old, and the Port is grumpy due to older gas in that tank.
@davekimbler2308
@davekimbler2308 3 жыл бұрын
@@saveitforparts that’s always possible ! Another thing is the cooling system is a closed system and if air gets to the fluid it gets hotter faster so something like a bad tank cap could cause it . How’s your boat doing ?

My personal boat is waiting for me to have time to get through the to-do list! The houseboat seems to be doing better after several fuel-ups, probably newer gas replacing the old stuff.

@saveitforparts

It never really died long-term, it just cut out occasionally and would start up again if you turned the key. We think it was old gas that had started decaying in the tank.

If you are going to hire saveitforparts to help out with the house boat then the first thing that you need him to do is to break out the welder and make a gas hauling tanker trailer out of a cheap trailer and a couple of 55 gallon drums... GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY buy your gas at the local road runner or 7-11 for $3 a gallon FUKZ $4.34 marina gas prices for 87 octane. and keep in mind that alcohol literally sucks water vapor out of the air so the gas in those marina tanks is no longer 10% alcohol but 10% water after a high humidity day.
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts 3 жыл бұрын
With twin 80-gallon tanks we'd be making a lot of trips to and from the gas station! And in most of these little towns you'd be lucky to find one within 10 miles of the river.

Stay out of the grass and keep the water intake screen clean and when you feel the grass is on the prop going forward stop and put it in reverse instead of going in the water
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts 3 жыл бұрын
It was already pretty tangled when the new owner bought it. I don't think it would have come off without diving. A lot of these little marinas are just a few feet deep so there's no way to stay out of the weeds.
@dennisbetters8900
@dennisbetters8900 3 жыл бұрын
The worse part of the grass is,it will clog up the intake screen for the water pump and that will take out the rubber impeller best thing to do is pull the hose off of the pickup pump and blow through it and if it's hard to then you have shit in the hose and through hull which in turn will take out the impeller and cause over heating, been there done that

The buyers had it looked over by a mechanic, who said everything was fine. They mentioned low power in the Port engine but thought it was weeds in the prop, that's why I was cutting weeds out before we left.
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts 3 жыл бұрын
After talking to some people they think the main problem was old gas, which you can't really fix other than burning through it or pumping out the tanks and disposing of it. Most of these little marinas don't have any way to empty a gas tank or anywhere to store 80 gallons of bad gas, so we just had to use it up.

What does a boat like this go for $ ?
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts 2 жыл бұрын
I forget what they paid for it, there are a lot out there for various prices depending on age / condition, probably in the $10k-20k range for this age. Sometimes marinas have really cheap ones when people skip out on the mooring fees.

I hate to sound like an idiot, but... The Mississippi River has locks?
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts 3 жыл бұрын
There are about 30 locks between Minneapolis and St. Louis. The numbering gets a little flaky since there's a #5 and a 5A, plus the two in Minneapolis don't have official numbers. The topmost one closed a couple years ago, supposedly to block invasive fish but I think mainly because Congress won't pay for maintenance. The next two at the upper end are likely going to close soon as well, so the navigable part of the river keeps getting shorter.
