Today we are sharing part 2 in moving into our 40 acres of unorganized property in the middle of the Canadian Wilderness. We are temporarily living in our RV with our family of 5 and 2 large dogs. We are hoping to build a cozy cabin on our land. Today we are sharing the RV clean up, rodent proofing our RV, and sharing the ups and downs in living off grid in the Canadian Wilderness!
We have a lot of work ahead of us! Hope you enjoy following our journey! Like, Comment (if you would like to say hi and give us advice), and subscribe!

Until you box in your side walls of your camper you’re going to have mice. Best solution are cats. We live by farm fields in Il and we tried very hard but until we got barn cats the mice would get under our manufactured home that is boxed in with concrete blocks.

Be sure to caulk around your windows outside and make sure the weep wells are cleaned out so water won’t stand in weeps to freeze in winter. Also be sure to make sure roof is sealed up properly. Helps to keep a fire going outside and smoking with some green brows or green wood occasionally to keep bugs at bay.

Buy A can of Yard Guard!!! Or two or three. I don't quite know how much one can takes care of but just spray and bugs are gone. Not forever but for that day it works. Just got to buy A few cans while you are working.!!!!

Smudges, using some wood, branches, green grass, weeds, make it smoke…keeps the bugs away to a certain amount…also lots of UV bug zappers inside and out really helps. And when working a large 20x20cinch cheap fans placed where you are working keeps them away, although the odd time you’ll feel the large ones hit you with bug guts…

Here's a suggestion to deal with your "buggy" neighbors. Integrate building small bird houses with your kids, so you can place them around your property along with maybe trail cameras to see what other wildlife neighbors you have. With those trail cam footage you can share that with our patreon supporters, which hopefully helps you with future projects.

We've been in the Temiskaming north region with 73 acres in Unorganized for about 13 yrs. now. We've found that the black flies and mosquitos come out when temps are about 50F which is 10C for those who use that. Here, I find that the mosquitoes last until mid-July when they die off for the most part and house flies take over for the rest of the summer. Being from S.Ont originally, I find that I'm extremely sensitive to those black fly bites and sometimes do get Black Fly Fever. My husband is originally from Timmins and isn't bothered. I think its a build up in your system over the decades of age and being bit? Mosquito bites don't bother me too much--they bit me too much when younger and I did react then. Rubbing tea tree oil on your body helps keep the bugs away. Used to have an OFF clip on mosquito repellent that worked well but I'm not seeing it on amazon. We'd bought it at Walmart--you could turn it on/off as needed. Have to buy some refill eventually. Still have some but would have to find it. Anyway, they worked WELL. Next time I'm at Walmart, I'll look to see if its still available. For mice, you need cats in the country. We have some highly experienced mousers here. They have their precision skills down to a science and we love them. When we lived in Niagara and had a little hobby farm, and had got some larger livestock, rats moved in. We went to a local farmer and he was happy to give us some of his farm cats. Two days later, rats disappeared. Wherever there are rats, mice will not be...as rats will kill mice. Our cats then looked after the mice too when they moved back in. Here we have German Shepherds who keep wildlife away. Despite living here with neighbours 1/4 mile east and west and neighbours one mile away north and south, and hundreds of acres all around we never see bears or anything else here. I believe due to the dogs on patrol. We used to have a hobby farm here too but don't have animals anymore, other than dogs and cats.

Will you have to insulate and protect all of your water lines before winter comes again?? Maybe you could cover the outside of your camper and insulate it on the outside before winter sets in. While also putting a skirt around it to keep critters out.I have seen a couple of video's where people do this kind of thing for their campers and even cover it like a shed roof..

Hi the mice came in our trailer was through the slide outs. I sprayed all under the trailer with undercoating spray from CTC. Sprayed foam in all the holes for pipes and wiring. The mice and chipmunks do not like to get oily or grease on their feet. Take the hay away from your trailer that is very dangerous for fire and small animals. Get a bug zapper either propane or electrical

easiest way to get a grip on condensation is better insulation, and running a wood stove, nice warm very not humid heat..... actually you would be better off to build a 10 x 20 cabin with real insulation and double pane windows, and a wood stove, and use that for your winter house oh and get some cats for the mice LOL

Also was thinking about all that dead wood. Any considerations in having charcoal burn barrels? Having one or a few of these going would take care a few of your issues on your property. Mainly, you have an additional fuel source, especially for the winter. Two, your able to clear your property in a more controlled manner. Third, the smoke generated should help with the bug issues. Fourth the ashes made, can add to your compost pile or to your planned garden area. Here's a link I found for creating a charcoal burn barrel. Hope this helps as well. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bcugYK6j3bOagqs.html

If your totes were raised...is there a possibility of gravity feed for water supply? Eliminating the need for pumps? This is a path I'm heading towards being off grid.
@OffGridWithGinaThi
@OffGridWithGinaThi 2 ай бұрын
I might build a small water tower in the future to use during the warmer months. I would still use the pump during peek hours of solar production to get the water up there. And use the water from the tower at night to save on energy. Great idea. You can get around 0.5 PSI for every foot of elevation.

Depends on perspective... if it wasn't for our trailer we wouldn't be able to stay on our land and clear the land, get to know our land, and would have to rent somewhere ... so, for us personally, it hasn't been a waste of money. We actually saved more by not paying monthly rentand able to have a roof over our heads while being on our land and learning as we go. A cabin unfortunately takes time to build and we are hoping to get one up sooner rather than later but it's a slow process. We share the struggles so others who are thinking of doing this know what to expect... especially if they are on a budget like us. When you start building you need somewhere to stay so this is temporary fix for us so we can stay on our land while we build.
