Can we just recognize that Emily and Ed have no problems in having special needs animals in display? Not only they home them, they have in display not "perfect" animals and are teaching about their disabilities. It's perfect.

It's great, especially with Rex being the "centerpiece" more or less, and being special needs due to her early life. Moody being congenitally blind, Ally having suffered an accident, and Rex having been neglected also serves to educate people about how disabilities occur and how to adapt.

So many people think disabilities lessen the value of their animals, which isn’t true at all. I’ve had a disabled dog for 14 years and I wouldn’t trade a minute of it. I’m glad that Emily and Ed can show people that just because animals might have disabilities, doesn’t mean they aren’t perfectly lovable.

I’ll be honest, those cages looked super small on camera and I was worried for a while but kept telling myself “it’s probably just camera distortion”. Seeing all the animals in them really proves to me that it was true and that they were, in fact, super big! That’s awesome!!!

Aww seeing Jupiter rest her head in Ed's hand, it reminded me so much of when dogs dot he same with their humans. Snakes really are underappreciated as actual pets (i.e. animals with which we can have an emotional connection) rather than as exotic decoration. Jupiter is just a beauty, and this old girl is sending that old girl a big lot of love!

Try too remeber there are multiple classes of reptile. And among them some groups like raptors are incredibly intelligent on a spectrum. Emotional intelligence is not apart of that spectrum for the majority of species. The ability too feel love for exams far too complex for a snake too ever understand or physically feel. So when you humanize a creature that can kill you have too be careful and understand its still not a domestic animal or a mammal. Snakes absolutely can chose a favorite person, they can feel comfortable and and calming sensations in a person's presence. But they will not jump into oncoming traffic for you. They won't notice if you die. Ect. Just be careful and understand even amongst birds, the ability too feel complex emotions isn't universal. Be safe ♡ and love your scally friends. Just be safe. My own bearded dragon was a damn puppy who could snuggle. But I still understand that behavior was mostly one sided. He wasn't snuggling for my sake like a dog might if you had a bad day. He snuggled for warmth and safe naptime. I own a viper that also snuggles, but you could imagine that doesn't happen much. For a multitude of reasons lol.
@austrolonium8115
@austrolonium8115 2 жыл бұрын
Some snakes are intelligent. All snakes can befriend and trust humans. But no snake can have a true, loving emotional connection to a human. This is mainly because oxytocin is only found in mammals. ( Oxytocin is the 'love hormone' and generally constitutes something to be considered love; to the best of the knowledge of science. ) By this logic, because snakes are reptiles and cannot produce oxytocin, they biologically cannot feel love. This is also why pet dogs or farm animals can feel love in the most objective sense toward humans. Trust ≠ love. They can and should go hand in hand, but they are not the same thing. You have confused them.
@Nika44
@Nika44 2 жыл бұрын
@@austrolonium8115 Well base on observation and parrot intelligence levels that are far higher than dogs, parrots can feel live too. But their intelligence and emotions etc. are in 4-5 years old level (as we know now). So not only mammals. Birds (not all of them but a lot) are able of thinking, feeling emotions such as grief - yes they really mourn after they loose their companion, I am keeping parrots for 20 years, I lost some and I saw how they were acting in the face of their companion death. They can also befriend other species, mine budgie was attached to injured fish that was sitting in hospital tank near her cage. Now I have quaker parrot for about a month, and this is even higher level than budgie or cockatiel, but they show higher intelligence (more like 5 years old) learn quickly (surprisingly quickly), and he really show us that he miss us. When i come back from a walk, he jump on my chest and cuddle under my chin, same with my dad when he come back from work, and he make affection sounds. But well, parrots are one of the most intelligent animals on Earth. And we still keep learning about what they are capable of (and each species is capable of different levels of understanding world around them, words- they can understand words context, they are not simply mimicking, they are talking, they get easily bored - trust me, so easily. They need TONS of mind stimulations or they will be in depression and self harm state, they are playing just for fun, and that list goes on and on. I wasn't aware of this medium parrot intelligence until now, I was sure that only macaws, african greys, amazons and other big parrots show that level, but no, quakers have brain of a most intelligent parrots in much smaller body. But this intelligence is also a minus, as I told, they need so much stimulations, puzzle games, he even play toddler games on my phone and seems to start to understand how it works (and he is just a baby 5 months old), they can't be left alone in a cage for hours - I saw so many bald parrots in the zoos, they need huge amount of space and mind stimulations that most zoos can't offer sadly. And I must admit, taking care of a quaker parrot is like taking care of a child, not a dog or cat. I have both, dog and cats, and none of them is as affectionate as this little bird. Yes both dogs and cats show love to me and family, but not on that level. Sorry for long post, I just wanted to tell that birds are very, very high species when it comes to intelligence :) Most parrots are somewhere in primates level :) as we know now.

I'm so glad you're doing name tags and info for the reptiles with abnormalities, but I would also love to see the same for the 'normal' reptiles as well! There is nothing I like more than learning not just about the species of animal, but that exact animal in particular. Every individual of a species is different, and that's what makes places like zoos special, because unlike museums that have replica examples of the animals for demonstrative purposes, zoos have individual animals with their own stories.

I don't know how heavy that rock is/how strong Jupiter is, but there is a chance she could accidentally push the rock and have the log accidentally crush her body 😥 Maybe you guys should secure that log to the wall
@pridegluttony9936
@pridegluttony9936 2 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly the most the logs in the enclosures are cork bark while the rocks are also somewhat if not entirely hollow themselves. Which means they are pretty light weight. So if it did fall I think she would be okay.

Does Ally brumate? What happens for the animals in the zoo who would normally go into brumation for part of the year?
@shizukaakatatsu22
@shizukaakatatsu22 2 жыл бұрын
Emily made a few videos about brumation. Since they put only the breeding animals in brumation and most of them (if not all) are in the back of the facility, the zoo itself wouldn't be that empty. Here's part 1 of the brumation series where Emily explains in detail if, when and how they brumate their animals kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d62qpZthrNSVhmg.html
@MixR700

Argentine Tegus do brumate, but they don't breed Ally, so she won't be brumated. Since you only brumate snakes that you plan to breed, it's likely they have chosen specimens they don't intend to breed at this time of the species they breed a lot of (bullsnakes/hognoses). That way when its time for brumation, there is only 1 or 2 enclosures they have to remove of the species where they only have one pair, like the foxsnakes. Other species they have that they breed don't need brumation, like the vietnamese blue beauties.

@@turtle150 kinda like hibernation, the way I understand it. You lower the temperature of their surroundings during winter to simulate what it would be like in the wild. I don’t know how it relates to breeding, but it does somehow

Personally I think this would be a good idea, maybe with higher security though because people could catch onto the schedule and rob the place. For animals who are very friendly and social, like Peanut, you could do a petting zoo kind of thing where you let people hold and maybe even feed snakes and other reptiles that are super friendly! And Ally could have a bath time where people can help wash her off when she poops!

The fact that Emily and Ed know how to take care of and protect creatures with conditions that could end up with them dying in the wild makes me so happy. I'm glad that there are atleast some people who know that reptiles are not dangerous unless you provoke them. Also my dad said that if you make quick movements a snake would attack you, as they hunt by sensing movement. He told me to move slowly and gently when handling snakes. Please act slowly and carefuly when you are with your snakes.

I highly recommend you put a large water bowl/pond in for those Dumpy's. I have two that I have had for at least 6 years and they LOVE to sit in the water sometimes... My fat one does anyway but I have seen the other one in there too. I am pretty sure they won't breed or anything. I am pretty sure that the conditions have to be just right! 👌

3:53 I noticed that on the information sign you have pyxicephalus edulis as the scientific name of your African Bull Frog which is actually the scientific name of the lesser bullfrog. Pyxicephalus adspersus is the true scientific name of the African Bullfrog I know this because i have a female of my own.
