Every day growing up in the queens land my father would wake up at 5am sharp, never any later. He would quietly make his way to the shed with his tea and crumpet and check his lumber for straightness. He would only emerge once every piece of lumber had its straightness checked, verified and recorded. And god help you if you interrupt this process

I think with older keys you had to keep the key in the lock if you wanted to keep the door unlocked, keeping it on a keychain probably made it easier to keep track of the keys.

Oh yeah, I mean it might be more expensive today, but stuff like that happens all the time. Most people don't want to live in a jail, or in an old cult house, or in a house where somebody was murdered. So it ends up being quite cheap

@@angussneefthe best place to hole up is a supermarket. Apart from the frozen food going off when the electricity fails. The one I worked for and I was a key holder, sold bags of coal, firewood and bbq charcoal and bottles of propane, so that would keep me going for a while

@@Luton-Mick Yeah, more like 1.6 million now. I have family that live in north London. They live in a typical 3 story house that you see in some parts of London. They brought it in the early 70’s for a few grand. It’s the only house on that side of the street that has not been converted into flats and it’s worth almost 2 million today.

@@COOKINSPRAY I was stupid there's doubt about that but I never hurt anyone i was ripping off payday loan companies for year's I have no issues with who I did it to but thinking that money was worth 5 years of my life was stupid it's no excuse but I was only 15 and at 18 it all came back to get me it just wasn't worth it to be honest and the funny thing is I was talking to a prisoner and he told me he'd happily do the jail for that kind of money so I told him "time appreciates" he said what do you mean so I told him your time seems valuable now but in years to come on your death bed you'll give everything you have just for one more day with your family even if it's billions You know people often ask "was I scared to be alone with a murder in the cell? I told them "No" because the only person I Didn't want to be alone with was myself he's your worst critic and he never leaves you alone.

This is actually a great illustration of how the housing market has changed. The straight forward conversion rate over time is a small of the story. The bigger one is that a bigger percentage of the working population could afford to buy. However it wasn't all roses, many of us these days would struggle to understand the levels of poverty (not relative), police corruption, racism, homophobia and misogyny prevelant at the time. It's human nature to look back with rose tinted glasses
