We thought we would stop the nomad life after having a baby, BUT we still haven't found our happy place in the world. So, for now, we will continue to travel and explore until we find that perfect place for our family (at a slower rate -- but never giving up!). We went to Marbella in March (check out that video) and we LOVED IT! It's our happy place, yet, the rent and transportability are not in our favor right now. Besides, we want to have another baby soon, so it's easier for our parents to help us in Madrid than in Marbella where there is no airport. Now we went to Alicante, which is a short train ride from Madrid, but we were not 100% convinced. There is a big contrast between busy/loud and quiet/isolated -- I felt no in-between. Next, we will be exploring some of Gacilia. So stay tuned!

Why do people put so much emphasis on eating out! Don’t you ever cook at home? I wouldn’t waste money eating out when I can make meals for a quarter of the price of a meal.

My wife and I love Alicante. so much so we have bought a small flat there. Maybe explore the Carolina's, Benalua and San Blas, all inner city neighbourhoods that offer great schools, a lively atmosphere and more cultural diversity. Thanks for the video, and I hope you find somewhere you all love :-)

@@dani-moves Really enjoyed the video. The only con so far as we are concerned is that it gets insanely hot in the summer, although this would apply to Madrid too. We don't have aircon in our apartment so summers can be tough. What we both really love about Alicante is that if offers much of what a very big city offers but on a smaller and more manageable scale. It has Michelin starred restaurants, cinemas, world class museums, art galleries, great nightlife and a wealh of truly brilliant, often utterly crazy fiestas. It is also very close to other beautiful parts of the Costa Blanca - Altea, Denia, Cartagena etc. And for those who occasionally like to leave the city and beach behind it has the most beautiful mountains a 30 minute drive away. My wife and I don't have children, but our neighbours all do and they are very complimentary about Alican'te's schools and it's excellent University. Finally I would say that if you visit again check out some of the less touristy neighbourhoods. Carolinas Altas, Campoamor, Benalua, San Blas. Al of these are central, more culturally diverse and cheaper. The Carolinas, particularly the area around Plaza Manilla is so much fun. It's full of Venezuelans, Argentinians and Colombinas, Russians and Ukrainians, a boy oh boy, do they like to party. Anyway the very best of luck to you all in your search for a new home :-)

How long did you stay there? It's very hard to get a good feel for a place with a very short stay. The weather might be abnormal during the time you're there. Things might be different than usual because of a major event (as it was in your case with Las Hogueras starting) or it might be a quieter time of year (e.g., in August when many residents go on vacation somewhere else). With regards to family atmosphere, you might want to revisit the neighborhoods you were looking at during different times of the day. It could very well be that there are families in those areas you checked out but they weren't out because it was too hot, it was the traditional time for families to gather at home, or whatever. I haven't been to Alicante in 20 years, but there are definitely more family-friendly areas, especially in the ”urbanizaciones". You might need more time in the city to find out where those are. I agree with not living right on La Plaza de Los Luceros. However, you could find a place on one of the side streets nearby and it wouldn't be excessively noisy, with the exception of las mascletàs (REALLY loud firework competitions during Las Hogueras). One final suggestion that might help you decide to live in Alicante (or in Valencia where they have Las Fallas, or anywhere else they have noisy festivals): consider making that week the time you take your family on vacation somewhere else. If you're comfortable with it, you can even make some money if you rent out your place during that week. Best of luck! Maybe I'll see you there when I head back there for a visit at the end of this year. 🙂

Never noticed a problem trying to.find somewhere to eat between 4-8pm in Alicante city and I've been there 3 times. I haven't bought food in San Juan so maybe its different there. I would recommend Alicante as somewhere to go on holiday or to buy. I am likely to buy somewhere there. Normally stay overlooking Postiguet Beach. Not that noisy unless windows are open. There will always be a certain amount of noise in a city centre. Transport is excellent. Groceries are affordable. San Juan has a lot of newer apartments but maybe too expensive for your budget. Marbella won't be quiet or cheap. There are lots of tram stops in San Juan

My wife and I visited Spain with our kids on a quest for that perfect medium-sized beach town with strong culture, family friendly things like parks and schools, old-world Spanish charm, and didn't quite find what we were looking for, although we stayed around Malaga/Marbella. I have heard that Velez Malaga is very charming, have you been?

You just described what we’ve been looking for too! I haven’t heard about Velez in Malaga. But I do think Marbella it’s almost perfect except for the fact that transportation and distance from place to place is a bit inconvenient. Most Spanish people recommend Malaga for that lifestyle but I haven’t visited

Hi Em! I totally understand you. What makes you not want to go? Well, I think you will find great food, beach (so at least you will be tanned), and it's a pretty chill out environment. If you dont like the busy life, this is a great place to just be yourself in your little bubble and unbothered. But it depends. Also, the other advantage that you have is that Alicante has a great train system, so you can travel around Spain on your own!. Finally, many international people in Alicante, so I think you will be able to speak English and hopefully meet people! I wish you the best

Hi, I'm Australian living in Australia and I'm thinking about moving to alicante because I loved that city in 2019 I went there for my birthday arrived on the 5th of jun and left on the 29th of July, at 4:52 mnts you are saying that it's a beautiful view of the ocean (I made that mistake too) they have a sea, a Mediterranean sea, I'm a nutritionist and I'm thinking about studying languages cause I speak French as well as arabic and obviously English, just so I can find a job in alicante even if I'm terrified about going back to uni at the age of 40, would you know if I have any chance on finding a job as a nutritionist or translator? Thanks ❤❤❤❤❤

Hi Fiona! Well the workforce in Spain ir a bit tricky. I actually work with the USA because it would be impossible for me to work here as a therapist. I’d have to study again. I think you’d probably have to study again too :( but if you get a work permit maybe you can find something else to do? Or make your own business online? There’s gotta be an option!! I visited again in Sepember, and to be honest, I preferred the city center much more in comparison to Playa San Juan. Playa San Juan does have many expats, but I found the area to be quite dull and boring and the restaurants that are directly on the beach rather than on the promenade were extremely touristy and unfriendly! I like the city center which is compact and has a pretty beach (though again quite touristy) and the fact that there is good public transportation and the train station from which you can go to Madrid, Valencia, etc.
@dani-moves

I really didn't get the part on poor transportation. We were there in January with a then 7 month old baby. Everything in the centre and around the castle is compact and easily walkable. with a stroller/pram. To San Juan beach you have an excellent tram network which drops you off in multiple locations on the journey there and then drops you off in the city centre on the way back. Some lines you can even take to Benidorm. The tram is cheap, clean, modern, easy to use. The airport is a short 15-20 min taxi ride from the centre. The train station is decent and well connected.
@dani-moves
@dani-moves 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for this information! I think we did things wrong. We got lost deep into the town along San Juan beach (looking for residential areas where to live) and we got stuck over there and could not find any type of transportation back to the city. We should've come back to the tram instead of forcing finding a taxi over there. Thank you!

The apartment buildings are old. It´s not that they want to preserve them, it´s just that it will take time for the older ones to be replaced by newer ones and many people are still living in those old ones. Playa San Juan has a nice beach, though it can get windy. It´s not particularly exciting, but it is quiet and peaceful. The trams are great and the area is well-kept and generally clean. Playa San Juan is basically quiet and residential. I think Alicante is not an exciting city, but it can be a good and peaceful base for living and convenient for traveling to other areas of Spain from.

@@dani-moves My kids are 3 and 5 so they loved Paseo Maritimo, Selwo Aventura, and Museo Taurino. For food you can go to el Centro Histórico or el puerto deportivo. There is a Chinese restaurant in el puerto that is the best Chinese food I have had in my life. The fried calamari is fire. I don’t recommend desert in this place though. About an hour from Estepona we drove to Ronda (must do it’s a beautiful town and the bridge is stunning). @@dani-moves Calpe is a nice little beach town north of Alicante. It is south of you from Dénia. Valencia is a mix of Barcelona some aspects of Madrid with a smaller town feel. With the baby it may be hard to enjoy some of the biking activities and older kid activities but Ciutat Vella, L’eixample are very nice. City of arts and sciences is impressive. If you want a unique dining experience and great food try Voltereta Manhattan it was our favorite meal in Valencia. I think it’s just still too hot to really enjoy things during the day. I am sorry but your research was not good enough 😢 especially about time for first visit in Alicante The HOGUERAS festival is the biggest celebration time in Alicante and the city is double crowded then in any other time of the year Also public transport is dedicated to this festival for few days Also most of the people are going to the center of the city to celebrate so other parts of it would look as you called as a ghost city You should definitely learn how to use public transportation. It’s really easy and really comfortable especially when you want to travel between the city center and playa San Juan The areas you were searching in a first place place like Explanada area next to the harbor or plaza de Luceros area are totally not for living just for visiting These are 100% touristic area Personally, I would recommend this city for a living truly but more research needs to be done. People are friendly. The education is perfect both public and private you can find busy places if you want to spend some time with people or beautiful more quiet areas close to the city .
