About the subscriptions! Cancel them and buy them again when in Canada. Netflix, Spotify, all of them struggle to do it so it's easier to do it this way. You won't loose your history (at least I didn't for those 2)

If you have a Driver's License rememeber to carry and also Driver's Abstract which is very usefull to reciprocate to Canadian License. If you don't then you have to do a complete 2 stage driver conversion and tests as a new driver, which will can be confusing.

Excellent video and full of some very helpful suggestions. The only thing I question a bit is the cost of the raincoat - where did you go to pay $500 for a raincoat?? LOL. Sport Chek is typically running sales that are very reasonably priced (say under $200 or so). Now Sporting Life on the other hand or MEC - not so much. Perhaps a follow up video on reasonably priced places to shop might be in order?
@stephentadgh
@stephentadgh 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it Rob. So I properly should have specified that when I got here I had so many locals telling me about the magical properties of Gore Tex and how any rain jacket that isn't gore tex isn't worth buying. This led me down some rabbit holes where one of the cheapest coats I could find (that was gore tex) was $450 pre tax. But a great idea for a video about reasonably priced places to shop! Especially for groceries and other essentials!

@@stephentadgh - Aww those locals are crazy. Lol. I've lived here 3 years (I'm in Poco) and I have several rain jackets - none of which are Gore Tex and I stay completely dry. It's probably the same group of folks telling immigrants to buy a $1200 Canada Goose winter coat for those 5 or 10 days of snow 😉. Keep up the great work!

Crazy expensive insurance is right! Hopefully this can help someone get their plan reduced because buying a car with the fuel costs and insurance prices the way they are now seems like a bad move, but very tough to see the rest of BC without one.

Interesting insight about coming in as a visitor first and activating the IEC later. I'm also considering moving from Dublin. How did you find the rental situation, easier than Ireland?
@Moving2Canadainfo
@Moving2Canadainfo Жыл бұрын
Hey Damian, Stephen here! So personally when I moved I found the rental market comparable if not slightly cheaper than what I was paying for in Dublin (Grand Canal Dock) BUT I know Vancouver ( where I live) has been pretty rough for people moving over during the last few months and prices have gone way up. If you're looking for shared accommodation though or willing to set aside anywhere from $2300-$2600 for a 1 bed place by yourself I'd imagine you'd be pretty safe just be careful with scams out there as there are many

Ok, an idea for one of the next videos: I've heard from almost every person who had emigrated, what the the first apartment they rented was a mess. That happened because newcomers usually are not aware about some local nuances (related to climate, to neighborhoods, etc.) So is there any thing you should be extra aware of while choosing an apartment to rent in Canada? Any pitfalls?
@stephentadgh
@stephentadgh 2 жыл бұрын
Great suggestion! That could be helpful because I do think a lot of newcomers don't leave enough time to find a long term place for themselves and end up having to ignore some of the red flags. It can be because its crazy expensive here, amongst other things, esp in the bigger cities, but giving people a heads up to leave a little bit more time in temporary accommodation might leave some breathing room so they spot the flags and make sure they get an actual nice place to live! It could also be such a cool way to connect with some newcomers who have landed last year or even earlier! Love it! Thanks so much 😊

Question, if you have these documents for housing what is the average waiting period because in America depending on where you live you can wait years for housing/apartments.... I waited 7 years in TX and only moved down 200 people in the list.
@Moving2Canadainfo
@Moving2Canadainfo Жыл бұрын
It depend Rosa, the documents tend to speed up the selection process for sure, esp when you apply against other people. we haven't heard about longer wait times that maybe a week or so as you have to wait until a unit becomes available and then apply directly to the owner or management company so you don't have the issue of a massive list of people to go through. Hope that helps, 7 years to move down 200 people seems rough!

Question: I own my own home; I haven't rented since...I don't even remember when. How should I proceed with regards to renting in Canada, then?
@stephentadgh
@stephentadgh 2 жыл бұрын
That is a very good question. We were very transparent with our landlord when it came to credit checks etc... so I imagine if you can show proof of home ownership or mortgage payments or anything to prove your a trustworthy tenant you'll be a-ok. A work reference can also help with renting a place as its vouching for your character so maybe still worth getting one of those for your house hunt?
@JasmineEMTrudeau

We were in the same circumstance when we moved here. When we found an apartment we were given 3 options. 1)Provide references from previous landlords. (Not possible as we had not rented in over 20 years). 2)Have a Canadian citizen co-signer on the lease. (Also not possible as we didn't know anyone in Canada) 3)Pay the first and last months rent up front with a letter from our employer in Canada showing our employment status and how much we were paid and proof that we received those paychecks into a Canadian bank account. The third was the only one we could do. We rented our apartment from a huge corporation so I don't know if it would have been different with a private landlord.
@stephentadgh
@stephentadgh 2 жыл бұрын
@@JasmineEMTrudeau Very interesting. We actually had to pay our first and half months rent as well as we had no line of credit built up in Canada yet. The only positive is that means we are not paying rent in December which is always a nice time to have some extra money in your pocket! But really good to know you found a work around.

So I landed with around €6500 ish when I moved. BUT I was looking for a one bedroom apartment and had a stupidly expensive AirBnB for 2 months that was also being taken out of that money. I think if you aim for €5000 it’s a nice cushion to make the move over but the more the better as this city can eat up your money quick. ESP if you want to do some of the more tourists things when you land.

@stephentadgh
@stephentadgh 2 жыл бұрын
If you're looking for a work reference try and get your employer to talk about how great and reliable you were while working for them, good time management, organized, took the initiative, whatever will make you look more appealing for a potential employer. With regards rental accommodation though you want to show that you can be trusted with the property, maybe have a previous landlord speak about how reliable you were with paying rent on time, how well you treated your rental unit and how respectful you were. Hope that can help you Amber!
