Our little family of 5 made the move to Oahu, Hawaii approximately 3 months ago and a common question that we've been getting is "How much does it cost to live in Hawaii?" It's no secret that Hawaii is an expensive place to live, but your cost on living here on the islands really depends on your values and lifestyle. With that said, you will have fixed costs such as housing, utilities, insurance, education, groceries, etc. In this video, I'll go some very general living costs that you can expect to incur living here on the island of Oahu.

I am so sick of people saying how expensive it is to live Hawaii. It’s dependent on where you are from originally. Yes, coming from the midwest like yourself it is more but being from the East or West Coast it is not at all. I live six months on Oahu and six months in West LA. The rent and costs in West LA is way higher. A travel magazine recently rated the top ten most expensive cities and the top ones were all in California or NY. Honolulu was the bottom ten. To put it in perspective, coming from Idaho and moving to Hawaii is a shock. But not for most people already living in high income cities.
@sweeper1977

I think your take was more biased and misleading. Hawaii is way more expensive than California or NYC from a practical perspective. In LA for example, you can always find affordable options 1-2 hours away. In NYC you can live in suburb. In fact that's what most people including myself do. In Hawaii you have no where to go because everywhere is quite expensive. Maybe Hilo side of big island is exception. But that's not like NYC or LA suburb. It is literally an unfriendly developing country if you know what I mean.

I can retire early in virtually ANY state in the country outside of Hawaii. Just move to the suburbs or country so side. Can't do that anywhere in Hawaii. Only reason why I won't move there. I'm 41 with a paid off house and travel without worrying about money. For me, financial stress around palm trees is far worse than seeing snow 3 months a year but having peace of mind with land that I own.

@@KevinNordstrom not true. Big island is cheap. Just spent three weeks there. Oahu is more expensive. Gas on big island cheaper than southern California. Costco prices the same. Food is a little more expensive on big island but otherwise the same or cheaper.

What about eating out once in a while, shopping for household goods, and water bill? It ain't cheap here, but man is it so F in beautiful. I am grateful every day I wake up in this paradise

Do you think I have a chance within the next two years to land a job in the tech sector in Hawaii? The 5 languages I speak: Italian, English, French, German, Chinese. Plus I have knowledge of Japanese, Spanish and Russian. The 3 degrees: Languages and cultures, Robotics, Applied artificial intelligence. The tech degrees have been undertaken under the stricter requirements of an international university in Germany.

Income is not the point, do you have capital? If you can buy a condo for cash, now 500k min, nice one for 750k, you are good. Rent out a room to cover maintenance fee and maybe more. Proper tax is low, 2 to 3 k pa probably, for condo. Electricity, well you don’t need heating or aircon, so maybe 150pm. Don’t need a damn car, use bike and bus. Free use of beach every day, so no need to waste on leisure. Groceries about 40 to 50% more than mainland. If job covers health insurance or you got it worked out you are sorted.

For the average person, please do NOT move to Hawaii. You most likely won’t enjoy living here. It’s not like New Zealand where there’s a lot of land to roam around. You can drive around each island in a few hours. Most people can’t conceptualize this because they’re used to living on a continent. It’s different and hard to adjust.

He has family every where all over the world he doesn't even know about anymore he told even has an uncle in Australia. Now we are in Oklahoma, the Hmoob population here continues to grow. Sooo, you seem like a kind and level-headed person, so I’m going to talk to you in good faith that that’s the case and hope I don’t offend you (please know from the beginning that thats not my intention). Here goes… This is going to sound like a radical conspiracy theorist rant, so again, please be open-minded… Hawai’i or more accurately The Hawaiian Kingdom is not part of the US, we’re a sovereign country and we’ve been illegally occupied by the US for 130 years and counting in the longest unprecedented prolonged belligerent military occupation of a country EVER, by far… told ya, I know I’m coming off crazy 🤪. So here’s the thing, we gained international recognition as a sovereign country in 1843, which essentially is what actually MAKES you a country. Once sovereignty is recognized it can’t be taken or revoked, it can only be relinquished. We never relinquished our sovereignty to the US, therefore we were never part of the US. Because we refused to relinquish our sovereignty, the US claimed to annex us through a joint resolution, but a joint resolution cannot annex a foreign country because it doesn’t extend beyond the borders of its own country, the US could no more pass a law annexing The Hawaiian Kingdom than China could pass a law annexing the US. The US later held a “statehood vote”, first of all, the US held this vote and it’s a violation of international law for an occupying country to hold votes or elections in foreign countries it occupies, it’s a w*r crime. Secondly, the US only allowed AMERICANS to vote on whether or not we became a state of the union, Hawaiians, who are the only ones who legally could vote on OUR political affairs, were banned from voting AND a good portion of the Americans who voted were US military stationed in our Kingdom. Thirdly, a plebiscite vote (statehood) must legally include these four options -the option to be independent -the option to be a “territory” of a foreign country -the option of free association -the option to join (become a state of) a foreign country These options were completely absent on the ballots, they only had the option to become a state with a yes or no to check AND the ballot said votes for yes agree that all land in Hawai’i be forfeited to the US… again I remind you, Americans were the only people allowed to vote. This would be like China claiming the US was part of their country then only allowing Chinese people to vote on if America becomes a state of China and saying their votes of yes means Americans land gets forfeited to China. As I said Om aware that I sound like a nutcase and I don’t expect you to believe me, so instead I offer links to reputable & highly credible sources of hearing it from them would help you understand or believe me, they’re in my profiles “about” section under “links”, 2 are links to resolutions from International law organizations and 1 is a link to a memorandum from a UN Independent Expert and Advisor, there’s other organizations and individuals who are aiding us as well, but I’m only allowed so many links on YT profiles and those feel the most convincing to me… aside from them, the permanent court of arbitration in The Hague have also confirmed that The Hawaiian Kingdom continues to exist as a sovereign country. So why am I saying all of this, well in accordance to Article 49 of the IV Geneva Convention: _”The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.”_ that means it’s actually a. violation of International law for Americans to enter The Hawaiian Kingdom (or any foreigners in our case as we don’t have the ability to grant access to foreigners, the US had taken away our right to control our borders). There’s also the fact that are lands were stollen (“pillaging” in accordance to international law) and ALL of the land Americans and other foreigners are on were stollen from Hawaiians (including the land you’re living on) and the rightful owners of the land were displaced. Hawaiians are suffering immensely because of all of this, we’re actively fighting to get the US & it’s citizens out, we currently have delegates at the UN actually, and there are now more Hawaiians living outside of Hawai’i than in Hawai’i, our homelands. Diaspora is a huge problem and the more Americans that move here the harder it is for us. Americans are pricing us out of our homelands, our country, and it’s all illegal. You’re contributing to that by being here AND by posting these videos making it easier for others who are unaware (hopefully) of the situation to likewise move here as well and further contribute to the diaspora and illegal occupation of our friendly neutral country. These are international law violations, w*r crimes, it’s serious. I’m 95% sure you weren’t aware of any of this, so the question becomes, what are you going to do now that you DO know?! Will you continue on as if you never learned this because you enjoy the benefits of oppressing our people? If you’re interested in learning more, I would suggest looking up Dr. Keanu Sai here on KZfaq or going to the links in my profile. If you have questions, let me know. Take care 🤙🏽

That’s great and all, but what is the point you are trying to make with this? Hawaii’s economy would immediately turn to shit if it lost its connection to the United States. You would have to get another country to invest in it, which there really isn’t any value in doing so unless it is for military purposes. AKA a giant military base right next to the U.S. You would have to gain the interest of an enemy of the U.S. to invest in it, basically just making you a vessel of a different nation. and we all know how that goes when China invests in other countries 🤪 While you may feel that it should be independent, there’s really no benefits to gain.

@@user-hi7jk6fu3f Here’s the thing, your comment presumes you (or any civilian) or America has any say, AND that we (Hawaiians) are incumbent upon convincing you (or any civilian) or America that we deserve our sovereignty or independence, in the case of your comment it’s particularly based on economics… that’s all false. This is a legal matter between two nations, and as such any and all legal matters must be worked out through due process in an international court (inter=between, national=nations) and the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague has already acknowledged our sovereignty remains in tact, so has the UN. The Hawaiian Kingdom gained sovereign recognition in 1843, that’s been verified at both the UN & by a PCA tribunal in The Hague, therefore the legal presumption of continuity says The Hawaiian Kingdom CONTINUES to be a sovereign country, as sovereignty cannot be revoked once given, it can only be relinquished by the sovereign nation via a treaty, wherein it relinquishes its sovereignty to another country, not while under duress. If you don’t understand the significance of the above paragraph (which from youre comment, I have to assume you don’t), that means the burden of proof lies upon the US. And again, if you don’t know what that means, it means the US holds the burden of proof and must prove by which legal mechanism it legally annexed the Hawaiian Kingdom, which in this case can only be a treaty of annexation signed by both parties, not while under duress, where the Hawaiian Kingdom relinquished its sovereignty to the US. Additionally to its sovereignty, this treaty would also be where details agreed upon by both parties, regarding things such as citizen rights and land rights etc, would be detailed. But no treaty of annexation exists, because no treaty was ever signed, because the U.S. in fact DID NOT annex The Hawaiian Kingdom, it just claims to have done so by a joint resolution… but a joint resolution can’t be used to annex a foreign country because it’s unilateral and most importantly because it’s bound by the restrictions of being a U.S. DOMESTIC act of legislature and has no power or jurisdiction beyond the borders of the U.S. If the US could pass a bill declaring ownership of a foreign country, other foreign countries could do the same claiming ownership of the U.S. See the flaw in that?! So all of that 👆🏽, is to say it’s not our responsibility to prove we are part of the US, it’s the US’s responsibility to prove we are part of the US. Now even if we ignore all of that 👆🏽, and I just comment regarding your elementary understanding of international law and likewise this topic… you need a reminder that The Hawaiian Kingdom DID in fact survive financially without the US, in fact we prospered and thrived ABOVE the US at the time. We were far more wealthy than the US, far more advanced, & far more educated. The proof of that lies in the fact that A) The Hawaiian Kingdom has a gold reserve that’s estimated to be more gold than if you combined all the rest of the “known” gold in the entire world together (we still have it, although the US has been trying unsuccessfully and quite desperately to get it 🤭), and you can verify that right here on KZfaq by searching “Hawaiian Kingdom gold”, or something to that effect. B). Our monarchs invested well in many different industries, which Hawaiians are STILL beneficiaries of to this day. Such investments fund many programs for Hawaiians and show no signs of running out anytime soon. C). Our Palace and most of our residents had electricity before even your White House did. D). We had free universal healthcare (something Amerikkka STILL can’t manage to pull off) E). Hawaiians had the highest rate of literacy in the world at nearly universal literacy and the vast majority of Hawaiians were multilingual (vs the U.S. that only had an approximately 40% literacy rate at the time). F). Hawaiian subject had the highest rate of college graduates per capita in the world (vs the U.S. at the time where a college education was extremely rare, something that only the very wealthy elite had access to & only allowed men to get a college degree). Now if you have common sense, which you hopefully do, common sense dictates that had the US not negatively intervened in the progress of The Hawaiian Kingdom and it’s subject, we would have continued on that same path. Instead, the US banned us from speaking our native language, implemented violent punishments (severe beatings) against school children who spoke our native language, systematically altered our education standards to subpar levels and altered our schools (which were viewed as the best in the world, where monarchs and dignitaries sent their children to get educated) from college preparation scholastics, to that of military and labor preparation scholastics (they turned Hawaiian schools into JROTC schools to train us to be their soldiers… a w^* crime). In case you’re unaware, Hitler implemented these exact same tactics on Jews decades later. Aside from the investments of our monarchs, there’s ALSO the fact that when occupations end, all occupiers MUST provide reparations to the country they occupied. These reparations are based off of crimes committed and the length of time the occupation occured. In our case, this is the longest occupation of a foreign country ever BY FAAAAAR. Based on previous occupations, our legal team (which consists of the worlds utmost experts in international law as well as contributions by international law organizations) have estimated the reparation fine to be approximately $12 trillion dollars (and rising millions of dollars every day we continue to be occupied). SOOO, it’s so kind of you to worry about our economy 🤭🙄, but we’ll be fine… Amerikkka on the other hand, will become a third world country with an additional $12 trillion added to its already enormous national debt and plummeting value of its dollar. 😁

@@The.Hawaiian.Kingdom I’m not saying based on legality. I mean economically. I’m talking about Hawaii TODAY. Everything is run by the U.S. government and you rely heavily on imports. Hawaiian society would simply collapse following a severance of ties with America. That’s not to say that Hawaii couldn’t eventually come back, but it isn’t likely to get back to the position that it’s in right now. Your bottom point is based off of America deciding to recognize Hawaii as independent and be willing to send it reparation money. However, I doubt that would ever realistically happen. America would likely cut ties and that’s that. What is Hawaii going to do about it?
