I sold my apartment in Park Slope back in the mid 90's for $250K. This was before the Barclays Center or before Brooklyn grew upward. A few years ago it resold for $1.3M. Maybe I should have kept it and rented it out.😪

A tip when looking for a neighborhood to live in regards to where work is, the number of trains needed to get there is also important. A 50 minute ride on one train is much easier than a 30 minute commute that relaies on taking multiple trains.

I agree with Jon here on how changing streets can change prices and commute time. When I first moved to New York I stayed really far away (1-1.5 hr subway commute to work in midtown). The result was under $500 in rent. Needed to save on rent so had no other choice. My tip is staying in jersey city (hoboken, exchange place) can look like a steal - so close to Manhattan, cheap rent. Jersey to Manhattan during rush hour and weekend is totally different. 20 minutes subway ride can turn into 1 hour subway + ferry ride. Same place can take twice as much time to get to on Weekend v/s weekday.
@HProTech
@HProTech 3 жыл бұрын
I lived on the main avenue 1 block from the subway. If I added a 10 minute walk to my subway station (make the commute even longer 😅😅) I probably could have saved $50-100 per month

@@HereBeBarr There are lots of people in jersey who have moved to Atlantic Highlands and just take the ferry to their job in Manhattan. Quick and pleasant commute. Yes, the ferry is expensive, but if they live in The Highlands or areas of Middletown NJ, they are close to Atlantic Highlands and the price of property is probably half of property in NYC.

I bicycle everywhere, so I don't care at all about being near the subway. You can save a lot of money that way. My first place in Astoria was nearly double the price of the place where I ended up moving, which was still in Astoria, just further away from the subway. Good for you and Adrianna for getting a larger place. I lived in the Bronx many many yrs ago. 182-183 Creston Ave. 1 block over from Gr Concourse. Easy access to #4 train and #1&2 bus plus Express bus used to stop on the corner of the Concourse. If I remember correctly the apts in the Bronx are large too. Families moving here with school age children need to pick areas that have good public schools. The Upper East Side is known for it's good schools, family parks and great shopping/restaurant options. Rents here are now very affordable. You can find a 1 bedroom for around $1800-2100 in a walk-up and $2400+ in a doorman building which is a real bargain for this area!

Hopefully indoor dining comes back soon but I doubt it.

I'm waiting until I finish college to consider moving to New York City. When do you think is the best time to start looking for a place to stay, and begin searching for work or unless you have a job in NY already.

I live in Greenpoint and it is perfect. If you are into the Hussle and bustle of Manhattan then it might not be your thing, but it is quiet and you can get to the city within 30 mins either from the G to the L / or the G to the 7

I love Greenpoint. It has that village feeling but close to Manhattan. Plenty of restaurants and cafes. Also next to Williamsburg with tons to do.

@@georgiasmith7615 totally, it is one of those neighborhoods that might be occasionally overlooked. When in reality you will probably get a very good deal when first starting out in NYC. A great location for being close enough (but far enough away from Williamsburg) and it being close to LIC and lower Brooklyn makes me give the area an A+

The 4 most important things for me when picking a neighborhood: First, being close to near subway connection unless you have access to a car. Second is distance, how far you're willing to travel to the city (Manhattan). The closer you live to Manhattan, the more expensive the rent is. Third is conveyance...being close proximity to supermarkets, bars, etc. Fourth is safety. Yes there's a pros and cons to every neighborhood, but there are neighborhoods which the cons outweighs more of the pros.

I can imagine with the cuts to the metro that commuters will suffer. It will add to commuting times if the trains are fewer with more times between trains.

That's still an on-going issue. I will say that taking the subway yesterday it's starting to feel more and more like old times, about 50% full at least now.

Very simple. Take a walk in that neighborhood, in the summer, at night, on the weekend. If it's loud, rowdy and dirty, it's going to be like that all the time.

Many places do have connections to local & express busses, or even dollar cabs in Brooklyn. Don't be a lazy snob & take the bus.

I’m not sure why I don’t jump. I will only get Street easy on my phone for years during lull time is at work. I would prefer the upper Westside or Hells kitchen area not the east side of Manhattan at all. Yes I’m in eighth or 9th St., Sorry, eighth or ninth Avenue type of guy.My age doesn’t bother me at all because I have no expectations of labels or love whatever happens will be a wonderful surprise. Closest subway access is important to me because the weather would be different well will be different than California. I am certain I will need a small monitor television device set of the weather at all times so I can prepare and not become aggravated. I think the Upper Westside would do nicely a studio with some prewar touches, the abundance of shops of all kinds, Ennius quieter which is what I am more used to.
