We recently moved to the southern part of the Netherlands, Limburg province for work. Our 2 year old struggled initially, but is starting to appreciate all the family time, biking and playgrounds.

This brings back so many memories We moved to the Netherlands over 30 yrs ago with our two young daughters One of those daughters NOW moved to Seattle with her family. Our daughters grew up with so much freedom on their bikes.Gave them so much confidence Will always be grateful to the Dutch way of life for our daughters

Here is another Dutch Perspective for ya: you'll have to make a decision: Do you want to be entirely on your own, and maybe get to know a few other expats, then by all means stick to English. Do you want to mingle with the Dutch, get a good taste of True Dutch culture, and leave those other expats for what they are for a brief moment? By all means learn Dutch. Even though the vast majority of the Dutch population speaks more or less English, it really is Dutch which is the native language of The Netherlands. Dutch it is and Dutch it will be. To the Dutch it is like this: OK you speak English, so you do not take the trouble to learn Dutch, so you must be temporary here and you must be on your way out soon. We (The Dutch) lost interest in this person. Or: Hey well so nice of this foreigner to learn Dutch, he or she respects this country and its inhabitants and this person obviously wants to mingle with us: let's invite this person into our lives! English is a foreign language to us Dutchies it is a way to talk to strangers whom want to stay stranger, or maybe to a person who really want's to learn Dutch but just arrived... Let there be no misconception about this: English is to talk to strangers and Dutch among friends! This is The Netherlands after all and our language is Dutch and absolutely not English, although to strangers we will talk English. By choosing English as a language, you choose to stay a foreigner ! And so doors stay closed for you! Doors that will open for you when you speak Dutch ;-)

Welcome! You should visit the Efteling and give yourself the gift of a museumcard, so you can visit musea in The Netherlands for free. Great musea with kids: openluchtmuseum in Arnhem, Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht, Archeon in Alphen aan de Rijn, Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen, just to name a few. Have fun!

Oliebollen were introduced in New Amsterdam (now New York), where they became oliekoeken (cookies from the Dutch word koekjes prepared in oil). You could pay them with daalders (a Dutch word and the origin of the dollar). These oilcookies were the first donuts.

Better check out the wild, wild east, Overijssel,, with Zwolle, Deventer, and Kampen city. Drenthe with its Megalites and ancient villages. Stay away from Amsterdam, it's a tourist trap... If you have to try cities in the west try Utrecht, Leiden, Den Haag, in the north Groningen, in the south Maastricht. And have a look at the islands, Terschelling, etc.

Don’t forget to visit the North and the islands, because they are well worth a visit. People in the south often treat the North of The Netherlands like it’s the end of the world. We always joke that the journey from the south to the north is twice as long as from the north to the sount.

We just moved from the Sunbelt to Seattle and use bikes as our primary means of travel when it's too far to walk. In Ballard it feels pretty easy, but as you know it's heavily neighborhood dependent here. I'm looking forward to seeing how life-by-bike is in The Netherlands one day soon. Did you already use bikes regularly while living in Seattle?
@findouttravel6 ай бұрын
Sam commuted by bike/train in Seattle and we used the car when traveling as a family. We love the Ballard neighborhood, Cheers!

Welcome to the Netherlands! I hope your child can swim? If not, get lessons, asap! It's a water country :) All kids end up in a ditch or river here and there... it's why Dutch children get swimming lessons from a very early age. ( I kinda think yours can already swim, with the travelling you do?)

Honestly not a fan of parents putting their child this prominently on the internet like this. I mean, its your child, do what you want, but he is gonna grow up one day and his whole childhood being public domain without his consent is kinda weird.
@findouttravel5 ай бұрын
This is actually a topic we discuss regularly as a family. As parents in 2024 it is difficult to navigate and decide how much of your personal life and that of your child you plan to share publicly. At the moment Andreas doesn't mind having the camera around, obviously if he changes his mind we will respect his autonomy. I just thought that I would mention that this is actually a topic of discussion in our household and we are always seeking to do what is best for our child's wellbeing and development.
