I wasn't born in Hawaii. Lived here (on Oahu) in the mid-1950's and again from 1959-1961. This was thanks to the United States Navy when my dad was in the Navy. Over the seventy-five years of my life I've lived from coast to coast on the Mainland. What I like best about Hawaii are/is the Hawaiian people. Nowhere else in the U.S. have I ever been treated as nicely as I am living here in Hawaii. My wife and I have lived on Molokai for almost five years. Wonderful place. The people, as far as I'm concerned, are the nicest people I've ever lived amongst, including those wonderful people on Oahu. Hawaii isn't a cheap place to live. But, as far as I'm concerned, Hawaii No Ka Oi. Andy McKane, Maunaloa, Molokai.

Excellent analysis and spot on! I lived in Oahu for 20 years in Kahala/Diamond Head location, right on the beach (doesn’t get any better when living in Hawaii), and ultimately really got tired of the weather. Everyone thinks the weather is great, but you have to like sunny, hot and humid nearly all year round. Clammy and sweaty is the norm and forget about trying to live without air conditioning. Bay Area weather is so much nicer to live in. If you’re from a nice part of CA with all it has to offer, think twice before moving to the islands.
@movingtohawaii
@movingtohawaii Жыл бұрын
I don’t miss the constant coldness, handful of really hot days without AC, fires and smoke, etc of the Bay, but I do know what you mean. When you settle into shoes and hoodies, the Bay is nice as far as the mainland goes.
@jenjones8353
@jenjones8353 Жыл бұрын
@@movingtohawaii - Oh I hear you. Just saying that many from the mainland think the weather is a big draw, and it’s certainly wonderful for a tropical vacation or even for a few years - but day to day living in heat and humidity is another matter and is not for everyone. In my 20 years in HNL, I found that folks who moved there for the great weather, were ironically the same folks who moved back to the mainland because of the weather.

That's why many, many buyers love to live in Manoa where there're drizzles a lot of mornings but it's very cool and breezy and green. Manoa is just below Kahala, Diamond Head in desirability because of costs to buy in Kahala and Diamond Head is so high. Just my thoughts.
@jenjones8353
@jenjones8353 Жыл бұрын
@@wilfredmotosue2615 - Oh agree! Manoa is lovely. I spent some time there as well, sort of reminds me a little of the PNW. However, regardless of the neighborhoods, the dilemma is still humidity and mold, something you can’t get around in the tropics. I only bring it up as something to consider for those folks thinking of moving to the islands, especially if they are accustom to living in dryer climates.

Howzit, I lived here on Oahu for 66 years and still love living here. My secret is live in moderation. My parents weren’t rich and rented all their life so I was on my own. Got married in 1976 rented a 2 bedroom apartment in Waipahu for $200 a month then, been living in Waipahu since then renting till August 1995 I bought my 3 bdrm 2 bath apartment for 189 K just built. If my good friend and drinking buddy hadn’t convinced me to buy a place I would have missed the boat as far as owning a piece of the rock. Luckily for me I retired military and use the VA home loan. That made a difference because I was paying near the same for mortgage versus rent at $1200 a month for nothing down. Now my place is valued at according to City and County more than three times what I bought my place for. When I die my place will go to my daughter who lives in Colorado Springs. My son bought his own place in 2003, he got his piece so my daughter will at least have a place on this island to call home.

I was doing security patrol at Kukui Plaza when I opened the 2nd floor business elevator door and I saw this long black worm. I asked my coworker "wtf is that?" and he said it was a centipede. It was hyoooge. I'd never seen one before. And a great time not for me to have my cell camera; it was in my locker. Damn!! The coffee here is on another level. Kona coffee is my favorite coffee. In fact, I'm having some right now at the main Hawaiian coffee shop in San Diego. Culturally, I fit in better in Hawaii than here in San Diego even though I have no trace of Hawaiian or anything related to the islands. I loved my time there and would move back in a heartbeat. (PS: I understand the Mexican food has gotten better. I only knew of the restaurant by Waialae and H1. It wasn't too good. I don't think it's there anymore)

I was surprised by the low produce due to the high cost of land. Spectrum is the best for your ISP network router using coaxial cable such as the way a mainlander would use Xfinity as the carrier for Verizon for your television streaming. Here's the catch. When you take Spectrum on your iPhone to the Bay Area, and in my case, San Francisco, your phone data uploads, like short videos for Instagram and Facebook, get second tier status and your friends on Verizon in San Francisco get your text messages up to three hours late. If you text them on your 808 Spectrum iPhone, they may not get your text for days, unless you first share contact information close to each other and they DELETE YOUR OLD CONTACT PHONE NUMBER. In Waikiki, such that if you're in Ala Moana Park by Magic Island for the New Year's fireworks, or on Kuhio beach with lots of other people with phones, your speed can suffer a bit more than those with Verizon first tier. If you are a Verizon 5G person on your phone, keep it, and your 415 650 or 707 number. Then get Spectrum for your home Wifi and DO NOT GET THE BUNDLE. Repeat at least three times to the clerk at the Spectrum store YOU ONLY WANT INTERNET and get the high speed boost to up to 300mbps, if you have line of sight to the tower the signal is coming from, which is the black glass building near the Don Quixote store by Kalakaua and Kapiolani--you have great service. I lived on the third floor of a nine story building in a great condo on Beachwalk, but did not have line of sight with the tower by Kalakaua and Kapiolani behind the 24 hour fitness center and home internet and cell wifi sucked. T-Mobile shined me on, just like Spectrum. They will never be honest with you and use excuses like, "We're working on the tower." Total BS. Don't keep T-Mobile unless you are in a modern building where you can confirm with other residents! I have since moved to an inexpensive three story walk-up building without an elevator, and have three tall buildings of 20 stories or more on three of four sides, but because I am on Ala Wai Blvd., with no tall buildings blocking me from the golf course side to the north, across from the canal, I have free and clear fast internet. Just as good as MonkeyBrains in San Francisco.
