Lawnmower Blades can seem confusing on what works. It depends on a few factors. Like what kind of grass, How thick, or thin your lawn is. What do you want for end results. Also time of year and how dry or wet it has been.

@@vicientedeloach2246 You'll be dead and the Scag will still be running. Did a full tune-up on my uncle's old belt drive walk behind Scag 36" a couple years ago, its from 1989. New belts, blades, carburetor, oil, fuel, spark plug, a new idler pulley for the transmission, and it was running like new again. Still striping lawns with no effort. Got the tune up done, and took it out the next day and cut a yard that was severely overgrown with 3 foot tall grass/weeds, one pass and it was all knocked down...no 2nd pass needed. Not bad for a 30+ year old mower.

Bought me a set of the G5’s since I couldn’t locate G6’s. So far I’m pleased with them. They are thick vs other blades I’ve bought and the high lift seems to chop the grass finer and the wife complains less. Now I’d like to add a mulching plug to the mower.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 2 жыл бұрын
The G6 blades are slightly heavier duty than the G5's, no real need to get the G6 blades. I have a set of both and can't tell any difference between the 2 on my lawn tractor. Both do an equally good job of mulching. I started using them about 4 years ago and have never gone back to the factory high lift blades on my lawn tractor, I see no need. The G5 and G6 blades do a great job of blowing the grass out from under and away from the mower deck when I'm not mulching. I have the mulch plug on my lawn tractor, with the G5 or G6 blades and mulch plug the leaves just disappear. I also run a G5 blade on my 21" push mower, same results, does great in both mulching and side discharge modes, I really haven't tried the bagger with the mulching blade on the push mower...I don't have a bagger for the lawn tractor, and don't really see any use for one since the mulching blades do a great job.

The Oregon gater blades work have worked well on my 42" John Deere deck for 7 years. They lift a 2 inch cut to the bagger and mulch a 1.5 inch cut with a medium drive speed. The mulching is excellent, no clumping. Makes mowing a 1/2 acre happen in 45 minutes. You are right to point out that a finer mulch will layer the deck; more liquid provides a bond. So I clean the deck about 3 times each season. So I would add another 10 minutes per mow to the maintenance column.

Thanks! I sent this video to someone that I do yard work with & I’m sure he’ll find this useful. We mow different kinds of yards here in Florida & some with leaves, weedy yards, mixed weeds/ Saint Augustine & nice Saint Augustine yards so the blades were using (middle one) is universal? I’m tired of the light raking & want to mulch it with side discharge bcuz they wait until it’s a high growth (2weeks) a big pain! And I’m putting a fine razors edge by hand (bastard file) on 2 blades (one in use 2nd back up to switch to after 1st ones dulling) for those that want a very low cut.

some good info.. I've been chopping up my leaves with the mower for many years and I can say that you don't have to chop them real fine. Just break them up a bit and they will quickly decompose. I chop them a few times as the leaves fall so there's less volume.

Gator Blades are GARBAGE when it comes to mowing grass. They are generally made of thicker metal for mowing over branches, etc... but for plain grass mowing, they are easily eclipsed by plain high lift blades. I bought a set, and took them off after one day.
@sonsofliberty3081
@sonsofliberty3081 3 жыл бұрын
@@n2omike good to know. I have plenty of hp for mowing pasture and lawn. Let the horses on a couple acres at a time, then when I move them I like to mow it a 4in and let it grow for a few weeks before moving them back into it. I also like to mow into the woods but I have to take big John deere with the rake on and maneuver the trees to try and get all the sticks. If I put those gators on the old tractor I can just use that for the woods then and keep my big cub for the real stuff. 25hp Kohler pro motor, zforce S with the 54in fabricated deck. Cuts amazing and at around 8mph, but it is doing 9 to 10 acres a week. I generally use my big John deere for snow but I have chains and a plow and it works really good in the snow. I do better in the snow with that zero turn with the steering wheel than I would a conventional tractor because the motor is in the rear.

If you have a three blade deck design... the real deal is that your discharge blade is a Gator blade... you want the other two blades to be high lift blades to keep your deck clean actually... your discharge is mulched up some but you can still stripe a lawn quite well... we pro’s have been running this setup for years with great success...😂😂😂

Had a lawn mower shop for 20 years. The gator blade is the best thing since sliced bread. They are mulching blades. In the south where we have a lot of sand, they last about twice as long as regular blades. You won't have so much long blades of grass discharging. Grass almost dissapears. Regular high lift blades are for bagging.

I run the Gator blades as well, I mulch most of the time here in southwest Idaho. The OEM blades on my lawn tractor are fine, just standard high lift blades, but started mulching, and got my first set of Gator blades and haven't used anything else the past 4 years. I have G5 and G6 blades, the G6 blades are slightly heavier duty than the G5 that's the only difference with those. I can't see the need to run my high lift blades anymore, the G5 and G6 blades do a great job of getting the grass clippings out of the deck when I'm not mulching so I don't see using the high lift blades for my needs anymore. I got into mulching because I got tired of dealing with raking leaves. Since switching to the Gator blades I haven't needed a rake. The Gator mulching blades just make leaves disappear. They do great for that, and they do great for general mulching duties during the rest of the cutting season.

New to riding lawnmowers, recently moved rural. I have a 09 lt4000 42" craftsman and a 04 gt5000 48" craftsman the prior owners left behind. The 09 runs fine, had to do some maintenance on the 04 to get it going as it hadn't ran in over 10 years. Now it's purring. The gt has the bagger system, I keep as much clippings as possible for compost, I mow about 3.5 acres. Question is: because I use the bagger, what lift size blades is most optimal for this type of mowing? Thanks for any input.

I haven't mowed grass in a lot of years, but I remember the Jacbson rotary with 4 short blades, each attached by a single bolt to a large cone. The cone bolted to the crankshaft. The blade would swing out of the way when striking an obstacle. The Disc would be removed, the blades reset and tightened, cone reinstalled. The small blades were reverseable and could be resharpened. There was a garrantee that the crankshaft would not bend, the only mower like it. Great design!

We own a Cub Cadet Enduro XT1 LT-46 that we purchased in July 2017: I think our year model is actually a 2016. Thank you for the great info on the blades! Did'nt know they made a sand blade, my ends wear out fast here. Now where can I get Toro blades besides a Toro dealer? Maybe Oregan dealer?

Thx for the info...I would like to see a vid on mulching blades...I hear that there are different types for single double or triple blade mower decks. That you should not mulch depending on the age of your lawn....new ,v/s old lawns etc. Any info would be great. Cheers

Any chance of a vid on the blades with dual / two types of steel ?? I got a set of (3) dual steel gator blades, for leaf clean up, they mulch great and they seem to stay sharp much, much longer. Yes, the gator's do clog up my deck bit more on wet grass.

What a good video! Thank you ! I use all 3 in CT there is no need for a sand blade, the gator blade IMO is much heavier than the others, what effect with that have on a riding mower? ( if you have time too answer)

I have gators and when I mow overgrown lawns it cakes my deck in vegetable based concrete lol. That slurry hardens into a solid if I forget to scrape it quickly.

Ok I have a question. Lawnboy 21 inch deck and cow grass will destroy the regular lawnboy blade. I am looking for a very thick blade like I see on your video Oregon high lift which is very important, and I have heard that one can rebuild the cutting sides of the blade by welding it with 7018 rod. Such has been done and the blade holds up strong against cow grass. What is the number of that oregon blade shown on the video with that heavy duty high lift?

I have in my time as a "pro" done a lot of lawn moving. It took about 1.5 days work to finish the area with a 110 cm deck with 3 blades. If I was lucky the blades lasted 2 times cutting then the edge was no longer sharp but instead rounded and nicked. At this time I would try to sharpend the blades the best I could but the grass did not look good with a inspection a few days later. The cut was ripped and somewhat inconsistant. An idea popped into my mind...why not make 2 edges? I sharpend the blades on the underside. The front was straightend and sharpend down to 1-1.5 millimeter. I was a happy camper better than new! Clean cuts and the blades lasted much longer. Mind you that my area is very damp and the grass is juicy!

What type of blade were you using if you don't mind me asking? The mowing crew I'm running has been having an issue with too much spring rain so constantly wet yards and it's causing horrible efficiency. I'm trying everything to help my guys not have to double and triple cut quite a few lawns. Just makes for a long day for the guys and I feel bad asking them to do 12-14hr days when they were hired on for 10's. Ooo another question if your sharpening your own baldes where you using a hollow grind or a convex if that makes sense? I'ma definitely try to do a double edge tomorrow when I sharpen them! Great info!
@Nillersoon40
@Nillersoon40 2 жыл бұрын
@@RailithicEmporthus It was standard High lift blades. You know those that are sharp in the front and in the back. For sharpening I just used a angle grinder with a lamel pad of 80 grit for the speed of it. No point to make it perfect but robust since the blades meet a lot of stone and other kling dongs...just remember to balance the blades and tell your guys not to drive to fast. I have seen it many times with a front mowing deck people forget to slow down in turns and therefore increase the speed of the deck to go faster than actual possible cutting speed. You can only go so fast it takes time for the deck to process the grass.

What would you recommend for a john deere z365r with mulch control? I'll mow half a dozen lawns a week and sometimes the grass is damp from rain or dew. When conditions allow I'll mulch,but need an all around blade that's ready and able to do either fairly well.

Please do a mulch blade video. I have a 52” Gravely zero turn and the blades provided with the mulching kit look nothing like mulching blades. They’re identical to the high lift blade you have there with the long sharpened surface. It fails miserably when mulching damp or longer grass. My previous zero turn was a Hustler and it mulched like a beast. Totally different shape blades. Thank you!
