My dad bought a1952 JD A in 1962 the year I graduated from High School. It was 50 miles away and I drove it to our farm. It didn't have an exhaust so the first thing we did was weld a pipe in place so it had a rear exhaust that really made it Pop-Pop. It was a workhorse for us plowing, baling, and even chopping corn. It didn't have live PTO but you learned how to handle it when you got to the end of a row. My most favorite tractor!

I love hearing those John Deeres run. It sure brings back some great memories. My Grandfather had a 60 and an M and later a diesel 2240 which I still have today. He sold the other two before I was old enough to handle the responsibility. I sure miss Him and the two cylinder sound that reminds me of him. I lost count of how many times I replayed the tractor sound part of this well-made video. Thanks for posting it. : )

Great video. The pop on the clutch is key. I'd alway put it in neutral and then pop the clutch in while parked. I'd cultivate 600 acres of Shiawassee County, Michigan corn every summer with the "A" listening to the engine pop in the early 60s. My brother would run the other "A" running through the corn. We used a 4 row cultivator. So we did 300 acres each twice through. "A" was smooth on gas. Eaglegards...

@515bucko01 Жыл бұрын
Here's someone else who know about the add on 3 point. The name cultivator is the primary reason for the rockershaft. Wish we had a 4 row, 2 row was all we ever had. Like he says, neutral and belt pulley turning keeps the clutch from rubbing the plates down.

I’m nearly 80 and still have all fingers and toes. Partly due to dumb luck because I survived doing some stupid things. Take this stuff seriously. Get an owners manual and read it. Cover up. Get long pants, long shirtsleeves, and gloves. Get some boots. Get a full, wide brim hat before they tell you like they did me “Hold still boy and I’ll cut that cancer off your nose!” I think you’re running your mower too fast. Both the ground speed and the PTO. I thought I’d be the first person to think of using a steel Pittman arm 40 years ago but all the old farmers said “It’ll shake your mower to pieces!” I never tried it and cut a bundle of oak blanks to make replacement arms. A little fear is a good thing. Good luck.

Your grandpa had the right idea. The A never had a 3 point, that is an add on. The A had a solid mount for he mower. The mower "clamped on" to a pair of "stubs" on either side of the draw bar. Your mower has been altered in the mounting set up. Once that mower was on, the only movement up and down was the cylinder. There was an adjustment screw above the Pro shaft that looks like a bolt with a long cap on it. This is where you determine hydrau!ic cylinder or the rocker shaft that that is now hooked to the 3 point. The cover comes off and the adjustment screw is altered to put the hydraulics through the pioneers or the riockershaft.

I hate to argue with you sir but to educate you John Deere did make that type of three-point hitch it was called an 800 hitch and a 801 hitch you can look it up in the history of John Deere that was a very expensive option that most Farmers did not get

That's way out the Park, we survived on 160 acres. This must have been after the lettered series, A,B,G,D,R there are more but hard to find. Deere did used equipment numbers like The model 5 mower and the 12A combine. I would like to see this 3 point. We did have the extra spring tooth attachments for going behind the wheels, removing the tire tracks.

I've always loved these old Johnny's growing up. There's a farmer here in the area known as the John Deere guy who collects any and all old Johnny's he can find. So he has loads of them that he brings out every summer and lines them up in a big hay field he has closest to the farm so people driving by can see them. I don't know the model, but he has an early articulated JD 8-wheeler that sits amongst the other tractors that always has a JD snowmobile sat on it's roof. I found a segment a few years ago done by a local tv show that was interviewing him back in 1990/91 about his JD collection and he said it all started with his fathers or grandfather's model A or B, I don't remember which. We're not farmers ourselves so we didn't have many tractors but the one my grandfather did have was a Massey Harris 33. It was put away for the winter, properly winterized and fired up each time spring rolled around. It was a great machine, he always used it for dragging logs out of the woods. Sadly he sold it sometime in 2001 and got a newer smaller tractor with a loader setup on it. Which my father still has today. Like the Massey it fires up every time it's needed. :)

I would bale the grass anyway; I often cut with the bush mower and let it sit for a few days, then rake it up and bale when cured. Just let the buyer know ther are weeds, and which weeds if you know what they are, to some it may not matter. I have a sickle mower but it's a pain in the a&& to hook up so I use the 3pt bush mower nowadays. Tractor sounds great, I have an old "A" as well but I need new rims for it. It had fluid in the tires that leaked and rotted them out. Reminds me I should call the tire shop and see if they found me some yet. :) Happy tractoring!

Look on Miller Tire's website. They usually have hard-to-find tire sizes and wheels for older tractors. Of course they tend to be a bit pricey, because, uncommon tire sizes and all. They even have old truck tires. I found some nice proper ag tires for my MF GC1723 sub-compact that I'd like to get eventually. For now the turf tires do their job. :)

Although I couldn't see in detail, I think what you may have between the rear end of the tractor and the Power-Trol, is a Baker Valve. That gives you the extra set of remotes. I've got a Baker Valve on my JD G in a similar configuration to your A.

@cornfed5229
@cornfed5229 Жыл бұрын
Don't know if anybody mentioned it in the comments. But just to correct the people that told you to start it in a higher gear is incorrect. The reason why I'm telling you this is when you use a lower gear like first gear the gear reduction ratio works backwards so it will spin the engine faster at a lower speed starting the engine quicker. By using a higher gear ratio closer to the gear ratio one to one you are only turning that engine slowly like you are turning the tires and that's why you were having so much issue getting your it started at that slow speed dragging that brush cutter. But don't take my word for it you seem to be a pretty smart man when it comes to looking stuff up look up first gear ratio versus 5th gear ratio and talk to some of the old timers that had to live with that situation

Got to watch gyromowers , n old tractors, be sure the pro has overrunning clutch. Many funerals where caused by rotary mowers on tractors without live pto, mower blades keep turning when clutch is pulled, momentum from blades will power transmission , won't be able to stop!!
