Since the original 50" deck from my 318 was long gone and I sold the 46" deck that came with it, I searched high and low for another period-correct 50" deck for the tractor, and ended up buying three of them within a month of each other.
The first one ended up going on the '89 318. The second one was found on Craigslist and was not far from my buddy Tyler, so he picked it up for me and I got it from him the following week at his plow day. That deck ended up needing a rebuild as the spindle bearings and several of the welds were bad, so I sold it - the parts would have cost more than the deck was worth. A few days later, I found yet another 50" deck about two hours away in very good condition. It came with the Powerflow mounting hardware and pulley as well as new Gator mulch blades. Only issue with it was a crack in the front lip from the blade hitting it at one time in the past. I brought it home, straightened out and welded the crack up front, and sold the Powerflow mounting hardware and pulley off of it.
After adjusting the PTO clutch on the 318, I got the deck installed with a new primary (PTO) belt, and (with a little hesitation) the deck roared to life and mowed quiet and smooth. First time in over 15 years the Onan engine had actually been put under a load, so that definitely woke it up. Aside from dethatching the yard back in April, this was the first significant work load this tractor had handled in a very long time. Had a few hiccups along the way, but it turned out to be one of the nicest mowing decks I've ever had, and now it's replaced the X570 for mowing our two yards at home. The X570 now gets used for my other mowing accounts with rougher yards.
I purchased a magnetic mount for my GoPro and attached it to several different areas on the tractor while shooting this video, rather than mounting it on my head like I usually do. Let me know which views you like best...I'll be sure to use them for future videos.

Michael, Given your mowing style, you really need a steering wheel spinner grip on that wheel...! Since I've decided to sell my 420, (severe overkill for my yard), I need to do the air gap adjustment on my '88 318 too, It won't engage either...

My recently purchased '86 318 has the 50" deck. I live in York and I've seen a lot of other local 318s for sale with the 50" deck. Must have been a popular option around this area.

@@MichaelTJD60 Wow, that is odd that they all showed up at the same time. Mine is solid as well. Previous owner took good care of it. I'm thinking about taking it off and having a local industrial powder coating company do my wheels and the deck shell. The only thing I don't like about that idea is losing all of the original stickers on the deck. I could at least cover them up if I decide to paint it instead.
@MichaelTJD60

@@nickberger1236 Most of the stickers are still available new from Deere if you do end up having to replace them. The only one I'd really be worried about is the serial number tag, as you have to go through a lengthy process to get a new one from Deere, and the one custom decal supplier who was making copies of Deere tags recently got caught and was forced to stop.

Thanks Danny! From my experience, mowing with the 316 and 318 are very similar since the 316's manual steering feels like power steering. The only thing I don't like about the 316 is lack of dual brakes, but that can be changed with a little modification.

I have never used a 50 inch deck, although I got one with the Cub Cadet 147. I don't think it's original to the tractor, it would have had a 38/42/48 originally. That deck you bought really does match the 318 well.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 4 жыл бұрын
A 50" deck seems like it would be a lot for a single-cylinder engine, but I've never tried one on anything other than a 318 before. The Cub Cadet 50" decks aren't a deep shell high-vacuum design like the JD 50", so it probably wouldn't strain your 147 too much.
@Tractors101
@Tractors101 4 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelTJD60 Well the 147 is a bit of a project and will take a bit to get going, as it sat in the woods for at least 15 years. I'm the meantime, I did put the 42" deck on my 106 so I could do some mowing. For how dull the blades are on that deck, it cut pretty well.

Weird question... but for view #3, where did you stick the mount? Isn't the hood fiberglass? Or are the side panels just longer than I think they are maybe... And personally, the head mount is my favorite because I like to see the grass coming out the side. Also, cool idea for another view: put it on the mowing deck by the chute so we can see the discharge.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 4 жыл бұрын
It's mounted at the front edge of the side panel, not the hood. I actually thought about mounting it to the top of the deck but I was afraid it would either vibrate too much or would fall off and get mowed over. I may have to try that next time.

I've never mowed with a Super so I can't really compare. I do have a 2072 but it's not currently set up to mow. I can tell you the dual brake pedals don't work as good and the steering is nowhere near as tight as a 318, though.

I vote against the time lapse and music video idea. If I click on a mowing vid, I want to see and hear mowing. When I come across a time lapse/music mowing video (or anything involving an engine), I just quietly leave. No thumbs down, no nasty comment. There's plenty of other channels I can go to.

"Oh great, another mowing video"? more like "Oh yes, another mowing video." Great video either way. From the sounds of it, it sounds like the blades are turning faster than on any of your uncle's 318s, does it have the speed up pulley on the deck or is the Onan turned up a little past 3450?
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 4 жыл бұрын
I thought everyone would be bored of the mowing videos by now lol. Mine is set at 3450 RPM like my uncle's 318's. I just think the 50" decks on the other 318's have quieter bearings or the belts are a bit looser and not turning the blades as fast. None of our three 50" decks have the speed-up pulley.

So I'm back from my little break, I did find a 318 I could get, but the guy who had it took off the hood, exhaust, put a different motor on it, and somehow put to big of a battery on it so in order for it to start you have to connect another battery to that one, because you can't get it out. you have to do all tis other crap to start it because the transmission and starter are all broke to hell. the blades are so dull they don't cut grass the just push it over, no proper wiring whatsoever. The decks full of dents from god knows what. So I decided not to get it because 1. I want an original stock 318. 2. That is way to much crap to fix, even if it works after, I don't want to buy something to have to take it comepletly apart and rebuild it.
