If there is ever a fire move, learned by a fast pokemon that hits everything on the field, coalossal will be really good. Steam engine applies to fire type moves too

Coal was easily my fave mon this gen, climbed to #2 on the showdown ladder using a team with a scarfed sneasel that offered a lot of utility. I think the rest of the team was made up of amoongus, hatterene, gastrodon and indeedee, but had an earlier version of the team with Butterfree and torkoal before the dlc

@@pettyjones primarily to outspreed most of the common checks that would otherwise exist to take out the sneasel or coalossoal first, thanks to inner focus it almost guaranteed I get the surf off. The main calc was against dragapult, and whilst it obviously loses flexibility, the surprise factor leads to a lot of favourable positioning as turn one from the opponent is usually misplayed

It also is worth mentioning that the mechanic change in the speed order in this gen allowed the strategy to work. Previously, it would only move first in the next turn.

I think Coal is a very interesting pokemon from a design perspective and as you said, well balanced. It was funny you asked at the question whether it is more brain dead than say Xerneus, but I think the main problem with Xerneus is that at its strongest points it warped metagames around it, whereas Coal was a threat but it was never really meta defining from what I've seen.

My first ever vgc team was a coalossal team and I had no idea it was an established strategy. I just picked 6 Pokémon I liked and seemed to have some synergy. Ended up with Weavile, Coalossal, Rillaboom, Gastrodon, Hatterene and Corviknight.

Ok, so the 1st few seconds of this video actually threw me into some shock as a witness a FIRE/ROCK type tank SURF, I knew his defenses were good but JEEZUS IT TANKED SURF!? THAT IS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME, I love Coalossal but due to it's typing I feared that it wasn't actually that good but seeing it take Brick Break & Surf with no sweat just lightens my day

Coalossal is a great example of what you regularly talk about in terms of how to run lesser used Pokemon. You used Goliosopod with Coal, but we've seen players succeed in Series 7/9 with Primarina, Azumarill, and Tauros with Coalossal. Perhaps they aren't the standard partners with Coal, but they still could carve a niche on their teams.

I find it funny that for my main play through of SwSh I used Coalossal, Rillaboom, and Dragapult only to learn the 3 of them were used together in VGC

the classic coal team will always be a team ill remenber! I had so much fun with it! using different mons with surf was fun! I think my favorite was using cramorat with surf! plus it was always hella funny to see the pikachu in its mouth!

coalossal is the anguish and spirit of every child that received coal for Christmas.. terrible attempt at a joke aside, coalossal was the first gen 8 design I fell in love with even before hearing the term vgc i knew this Pokémon would somehow be special

Sick video! BTW Grassy Glide is 100% accurate. I qualified for PC2 with the Santino Coalossal team and the team was so good! The team was just so synergistic with the main 4. Even if coalossal got off one +2 vocalith and died, that was still often enough to win the game with the remaining 3 mons. Having both urshifu and Dragapult able to activate coalossal made it very difficult for opponents to play around. Into bad matchups I could often leave coal in the back and set it up with urshifu or Dragapult late game.

Hate this thing. I eventually got a solid counter lead to it with Support Thundy and a counter pick in Assualt Vest Azumarill. Watching Wolfe play with it and do well was cool to see because of the interesting teammates he used.

I think coal really is one of the Pokémon that shows best what dynamic can do. Without max it’s healthpool is too low to really take a self steam engine and weakness policy boost. It’s moves also benefit from max; ancient power has weak base power, meteor beam is a charge move, solar beam is also charge. The gmax residual damage is also so powerful and has been seen to be a big boost for other mons too.

My Coalossal was very good to me. Ran a steam engine/trick room combo team in doubles. It was a blast, one of my favorites.

Truly I was never a fan of using the coal team, but I grew to respect it highly and always have a counter to one on any team I’ve built in SwSh. So it definitely has carved out its place in this meta. Will it be worth it’s weight in coal in the next, non dynamax, series? I don’t think so. But I will be staying alert in case wolfey breaks everything with another new coal team

tera completely changes your type to whatever your tera type is and you keep your original stab so you could come up with some cool strats for coalossal

I loved coal but unfortunately I never really played any teams featuring him :( thought it was to popular wasn’t going to do well now that every team would have an answer for it. But i was wrong the monster of a beast continued to be amazing and I regret not using him more often

on coal vs xern i have to say coal is far more brain dead because coal doesnt have to find a turn where it can set up in the first place but coal is also just a weaker pokemon than xerneas so i feel like the comparison is hard to make even with the teams being pretty much centered around one strong pokemon once its set up

It's really interesting how Rillaboom has essentially become the most useful Galar starter now. In the beginning, it was the most "meh" of the three, definitely not terrible, but compared to the speed demons that were Cinderace and Inteleon, definitely not standout. BUT, now that the Grassy Glide/Grassy Surge combo has been unleashed, Rillaboom is easily the best

I wish TPC would give us some more mons like this in the singles meta. The most popular competitive format is constantly putting mons like this to the side because doubles is like an entirely different game from even the in-game battles and it’s a shame to see it happen.

1) that statement is subjective 2) doubles vgc is the official competitive format 3) singles is a fan format 4) you don't have priority and the game is balanced around the competitive format 5) the vast majority of people are casual fans so they don't care

It has even more potential in gen 9 if you can pair it with smeargle. Focus sash smeargle will aqua jet with smeargle's pathetic attack to priority proc steam engine and weakness policy.
