Mozambique spitting cobra (Naja mossambica) spits venom with great accuracy up to a distance of 3 meters! This video will show you how this venomous snake perfected a defense behavior. Mozambique spitting cobra can inflict a serious bite, but mostly it spits the venom through the holes in fangs pumped from venom glands. Slow-motion and real speed footage reveals this snake in stunning glory. Cobras are fascinating venomous snakes, there are other species in this video - Forest cobra, Rinkhals, Javan spitting cobra, Spectacled cobra and Cape cobra.

Amazing footage and again I love the fact you do not use music in the background and stick to the natural sound of nature. The Mozambique cobra is a very attractive snake. Please keep the good work, more snakes please.

It's always a joy to discover a new video from Living Zoology. Beautifully filmed, as always. I hope you don't take offence if I point out that the Rinkhals isn't a cobra (i.e. it doesn't belong to the genus Naja). It is a monotypic Hemachatus.
@LivingZoology
@LivingZoology 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much!!! Of course we know that Rinkhals is not a true cobra :) But Hemachatus is sister genus to Naja and it is therefore relevant to the story of spitting evolving 3 times in the history :)

I love the venomous snake videos on your channel - more than any other channel on youtube. However, rinkhals is not a cobra; it's an elapid, but I'm not aware of it ever even causing any deaths. I really love these videos, though! I had never heard of the large green-eyed tree snake prior to your video on the boomslang, and now I'm hyper anxious for more studies and info on it.
@LivingZoology
@LivingZoology 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!!! :) We appreaciate it! The Rinkhals (Hemachatus haemachatus), also called the ringhals or ring-necked spitting cobra, is a species of venomous elapid found in parts of southern Africa. It is not a true cobra in that it does not belong to the genus Naja, but instead belongs to the monotypic genus Hemachatus. It is a sister genus to other cobras and the story is relevant because spitting evolved 3 times. If Rinkhals is not a cobra than King cobra is definitely not a cobra but King mamba as it is more related to mambas than cobras evolutionary.

@Living\ Zoology from the organic chemistry / toxicology point of view - it would be very interesting to get a sample of the venom: a) from spitting VS b) from a bite / venom milking. I mean does the snake use the same venom for both OR is the venom adjusted for the specific action? Just curious :-) (Well many snakes - are able to deliver a warning "dry bite", right? so I am wondering if they can control even more...)
@LivingZoology
@LivingZoology 3 жыл бұрын
Spitting cobras use the same venom for spitting and biting, it comes from one venom gland. But what is interesting is, that venom of non-spitting cobras differ from venoms of spitters :) Spitting cobras in general have much more cytotoxic components so the venom hits tissues when they are spitting. On the other hand, non-spitters have more neurotoxic venoms. And it is true that many cases of bites are in fact dry bites.

Hello, it is difficult. Spitting cobras don't look significantly different than non-spitting cobras. The only way to recognize them is to learn carefully all cobra species living in your area so you can distinguish between species.

As an eight year old boy, on the banks of the Zambesi, I went ahead of my parents and found myself staring down at a snake at the foot of a tree, it stared up at me with intense eye contact. A Zambian man ran up and started hitting the snake with a stick. I had been staring into the eyes of a spitting cobra. I'm very very lucky that man saved me from being blinded.

Good point! But, people who work with these cobras a lot sometimes start to have allergy and then they cannot have venom even on their skin, they can collapse. Venoms of spitting cobras are much more cytotoxic that venoms of non-spitting species.

Monocled cobras are known to spit sometimes. But in general, it is difficult to compare all spitting cobras to only one species, Monocled cobra. Watch videos about other spitting cobras from Africa: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/arKKoqZ2xpm4nYE.html, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rsyodKeZ0Z3Lkqs.html

What is the reason to split immediately??
@LivingZoology
@LivingZoology 3 жыл бұрын
Basically if they feel threatened by presence of other animals, they will spit as a defence. If we moved a bit around the snake, they started spitting.

How long does it take for the Cobra to reproduce the venom ? Thanks
@LivingZoology
@LivingZoology 3 жыл бұрын
The venom is produced constantly so the snake rarely get out of it. The production of full capacity might take several days or more than a week depending on the size and health of the snake.

to capture spitting in a photo, need to use burst modes in some of the new cameras you will get extremely fast succession of shots and you'll get the entire process captured. Try SONY A9

This is a very extremely dangerous snake in the way it doesn't always hood up when it spits, it might look like a simple snake, until suddenly it starts spitting even without a hood. Even the eay it can spit from a very narrow space or a hole that it uses as a hideout shows how accurate it is

I had no idea there were snakes that played dead. The one at 6:55 is particularly sneaky. You’d think their ability to spit in the eyes for up to nine feet would be enough of a defense. EDIT: Corrected nine meters to nine feet (3 meters ~ 9 feet).

Yes, there are snake species which are great in playing dead! In fact the longest distance for spitting cobras to spit accurately is about 3 meters.

I wonder if a Rinkhals showed the Cobra how to spit? In India,some of the Monocled that "Mirza MD Arif" rescues from one locale' has this trait,while others do not from another location. The Monocled that do,are in a area where Spitting Cobra's are. I wonder if Spitting Cobra span the geographic location between them all. Pretty neat to contemplate. Somehow (Maybe through shipping),a huge Cape Cobra got to India and when rescuing it did not just come at him the one charge through span of body,it did those charges twice (2 body length spans)and locked its fangs onto his thigh of his Camo military pants. He was very lucky as it hung right off the material. Very Angry Cobra that was as I revisit that video often.
