and taken so early.. at about 42. Some later analysis suggests it was some sort of liver disease , which would have been incurable back then (and even worse if a liver cancer of course)... no dialysis for Mrs Mozart's little boy. Tim Fidler

This whole performance, including the requiem is not only an honor to Karajan's memoir, as it is, but nowadays is an honor to Claudio Abbado too. Superb performance! There's not one equal.

THIS. IS. SINGING. Clear, distinct pitches connected together sensitively (musicality) in beautiful phrasing (legato) I’m an easily heard, unpressed, effortless way (resonance)

Maybe one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Famously used in that great film The Shawshank Redemption.

I could be wrong, but I think the piece in Shawshank Redemption is from the Marriage of Figaro. It doesn't change the fact, as you said, that this is heartbreakingly beautiful music.

This is absolutely beautiful. In the concert, Ms Harnisch sang the Mozart aria "Betracht dies Herz und frage mich" prior to the Laudate, which is equally sublime. For some reason I magically find myself cutting onions every time I listen to these performances. I can't imagine what it would've been like to have been at that concert - a lifetime memory, that's for sure.
