"The Notturno for four orchestras, each with horn I/II, violins, viola, and bass (K. 286/269a), with its sequence of Andante, Allegretto grazioso, Menuetto & Trio movements, gives the impression of being a mere fragment handed down to posterity, as the customary final Allegro is absent. As no original manuscript has survived, there can only be conjecture as to the circumstances surrounding the origins and the date of this work. Like the Serenata notturna K. 239, the Notturno K. 286 may have been composed in December 1776 as a New Year's music for performance in a house in Salzburg. However, the title 'Notturno' (Nocturne) rather suggests an open-air performance for some unknown occasion.
Despite the unusual instrumentation calling for four orchestras, the composition has a melodic simplicity in the way it achieves an echo-like interweaving of the ensemble. The first movement is in three parts, the second movement is in sonata form (without elaboration of the theme, but with coda), and minuet & trio complete the customary three-part construction." - Gerhard Walterskirchen

Thank you for posting this! Neil Zaslaw wrote: "It has been widely stated that this work must be a fragment because of its apparently unorthodox structure. This is a fallacy, for numerous Austrian works from this time have three movements with a minuet as the third" (in "The Compleat Mozart," p. 243).

Un grand Monsieur que j'ai eu le plaisir de rencontrer une belle carrière dont un modeste extrait :Il dirige plusieurs ensembles de musique historique : Hespèrion XXI, le Concert des Nations et la Capella Reial de Catalunya, parfois aux côtés de son épouse Montserrat Figueras et de sa fille Arianna. En 1991, sa collaboration avec le réalisateur français Alain Corneau pour le film Tous les matins du monde contribua à remettre au goût du jour la musique baroque et faire connaître au grand public la viole de gambe. En 1994, il participa également avec ses deux ensembles Hespèrion XXI et la Capella Reial de Catalunya à l'élaboration et à l'interprétation de la musique médiévale du film Jeanne la Pucelle de Jacques Rivette. Il a également créé son propre label d'édition musicale Alia Vox en 1997. En octobre 2014, en désaccord avec la politique culturelle du gouvernement espagnol, il refuse le prix national de Musique décerné par le ministère espagnol de la Culture1,2,3. En 2006, avec le soutien de Nicolas d'Andoque et de l'association des Amis de Fontfroide, Jordi Savall crée la première édition du festival Musique et Histoire à l'abbaye de Fontfroide. En 2008, la manifestation est retenue dans la liste des manifestations de l'Année européenne du dialogue interculturel. En 2017, le festival en était à sa 12e édition.

Pure joy and delight. A very original piece by Wolfgang, and it reveals a deep love for horns and strings. Outstanding performance by the valveless horns! Reminds me of the alps and Salzburg itself. @t

Mozart, genio en una época de genios. Ahora nos tocó una época de esperpentos "clásicos", imitativos, repetitivos, para diversión de los aburridos. Ni hablar de la música "popular" que toca el mas bajo fondo de la degradación, el mal gusto y la decadencia.

Of course, the ,notion of "for orchesdtras" should be discussed and has nothing to do with moderb standards. It allows the adolescnet Mozart to interplay bryween the sonorit of the srtingd and the natuel horns, whicch are most of the time present in the notturno and gives tio it its specific flavour. The recording is great.
