The Sinfonia Concertante for Four Winds in E flat major, is a work thought to be by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, and orchestra, K. 297b (Anh. C 14.01). He originally wrote a work for flute, oboe, horn, bassoon, and orchestra, K Anh. 9 (279B), in Paris in April 1778. There is considerable dispute about the relation of the work as it is performed today to this original work. The Sinfonia Concertante is scored for solo oboe, solo clarinet, solo horn, solo bassoon, and an orchestra of two horns, two oboes, and strings. A typical performance lasts about 28 minutes.
1. Allegro, in common time. This movement is in sonata form with three expositions rather than two -- one played by the orchestra, the other two by the soloists. It contains a written cadenza before the coda.
2. Adagio in common time, with "gentle exchanges of thematic material".
3. Andante con variazioni, a theme with ten variations and a coda. Each variation is separated by "identical, basically decorative orchestral ritornelli". This movement is in 2/4 time until the end of the last variation, where 6 adagio bars in 6/8 time lead to a coda in common time.
Mozart is known through letters and concert announcements to have written a sinfonia concertante for flute, oboe, horn, and bassoon, the original score of which is lost. There is considerable debate about the authenticity of what is performed today, and whether the extant piece is even related to the original work. Highly regarded scholars have conflicting opinions, and some say the composition is currently in a corrupt form. Stanley Sadie, for instance is dismissive. Alfred Einstein considered it genuine. Some have the opinion that it is inconceivable that Mozart wrote a homotonal concerto (i.e. with all three movements in the same key; here E-flat major). The Mozart Project considers this piece as "spurious or doubtful", and it does not appear on their listing of concertos. Mozart displayed affection and prominence for the wind instruments in his operas and concertos. Noteworthy wind passages are in the fifteenth and seventeenth piano concertos, with memorable dialogues with the soloist; flute, oboe and bassoon. In opera there are many arias with similar woodwind and French Horn passages, such as Fiordiligi's "Per pietà, ben mio, perdona" from Così fan tutte. Some authorities believe that these outstanding qualities are also displayed in this piece. The Sinfonia Concertante is popular today, and regularly performed. It is well regarded by professional musicians. Certain passages are of the highest quality, such as the coda of the first movement, which displays a rumbustious and thrilling finale. Robert Levin, who wrote an entire book about the piece, considers the orchestral part and the first movement cadenza to be spurious, and the soloists' role to have been modified by others from the original without having had the orchestral parts as reference. Levin has made a reconstruction of the original piece based on his research. It has been suggested that this piece has a recollective, even autumnal character. The writing for wind instruments here is of such quality that it is only surpassed by the later "Gran Partita" in B-flat major of 1781.

It is heavenly music but i think Mozart himself would not agree with you and would probably enjoy the higher quality pop music hits that have endured the test of time. The difference is that classical music is work of a much larger scale and effort to compose. A pop hit is only based on a few bars, chorus and coda but it is still music. On the other hand, ape beats is not music and is an act of racist intimidation from displaced feral animals against developed civilizations.

The way the instruments speak to and answer one another, then all combine to play soaring and ethereally sublime music can only have sprung from Mozart. His personality shines from every bar including the semi jocular final bars.

There is absolutely no doubt,. zilch, nothing that the wind instruments parts is by Mozart but the orchestral part sometimes seems like just filling in and lacking continuity. One can conceive that the conductor score disappeared but the soloing instrument parts survived and someone or more people reconstructed the orchestral parts and yet in someplaces it sounds like Mozart. I am not fully convinced.

Mozart actually wrote to his father telling him that he wrote a Concertante for four winds ian orchestra in early 1778 (before his trip to Paris with his mother the summer of 1778). In my opinion, this letter authenticated this work as Mozart's.

@Sviolinist 10 жыл бұрын
Just analyzing it as a composer and lifelong student of Mozart's music, it does appear to be by him. There are really only minor reasons to question it. Since this is an earlier work, it is good to see that the horn part is not very well developed. Mozart wasn't yet fully aware of what the horn could do at this point, I believe. This would have been around the time that he wrote the flute and harp concerto, and it really does sound like it comes out of that period. I would say this is more than likely authentic Mozart music. I give it an 81% probability. There is still reason to doubt. Some passages are quite non-Mozartean, but he may have been experimenting. This is really only a casual listen. I would possibly say something different after analyzing it closely.

Sviolinist This piece has been the subject of discussions for many years. I analysed this work in detail on The Mozart Forum years back. This forum is now sadly closed. Some musicologists and Mozart scholars have debated the authenticity of K-297b with mixed conclusions. The original score, which it was lost, included the oboe, flute, horn and bassoon and orchestra. This composition is currently performed for oboe, bassoon, horn and clarinet (instead of the flute). For more detailed information and analysis of K-297b, I highly recommend Robert Levin's book. Best wishes, Bert.

+Bert Kidder Since Mozart was less a fan of the flute, despite his wonderful compositions that include the flute, than of the other woodwinds - including horn, it hardly seems implausible that WAM would have left the world a version without it. Amirite?

lymanmj Excuse me, but I actually am the reincarnation of Mozart. I want to remind you that I hated the flute so much that I refused to even write an original concerto for it when first asked for one. I transcribed my C major oboe concerto for that purpose. I don't think of it as a flute concerto, either.

Mozart seemed to have an affinity for the key of E flat. The intro to this symphonia concertante is very similar to many of the piano concertos and the other symphonia concertante K 364, by Mozart for violin and viola. If you like this piece, I suggest you listen to Haydn's symphony concertante op. 84, also for four instruments.

Try reading “Steppenwolf” by Herman Hesse. I think, perhaps, to understand you have to be older, but I am not sure.. I read "Steppenwolf" when I was in my 20s and I still remember looking for a Mozart recording. I was living in a “dive” on Cherry Street in Chico, California. Luckily, my “apartment-mate” (on the other side of a paper-thin wall) listened to classics with her mother. I was so blue his Requiem (the only album I could find) actually lifted me up. My friend too. But it wasn’t until my 50s I realized what a genius this guy actually was - and is. If only he had made more music. Or how about Beethoven? He borrowed from Mozart (I believe), and built on his ideas, ultimately making music louder and more forceful. If Mozart had lived longer it would have only gotten better.

In my opinion, this work is clearly spurious, and for a large number of reasons could definitely not have been written by Mozart, however I have a strong prejudice for the theory that the author of the work had obtained the original Mozart score - an astounding priveledge he or she appears to have denied posterity. Shame to the OP for not crediting the performers, when accredited (and in some cases perhaps superior) performances of the work abound. As a professional performer, the most compelling performance recording I know is that by Neville Marriner and the Berlin Philharmonic players, and the reason is his judicious use of dynamics and "echoing" to bring even greater depth to the phrasing, which can be considered an innovatin in the interpretation of this oft-played and well loved work.

As the uploader says, Robert Levin wrote the book on this piece - literally. His exhaustive historical and stylistic study concludes that the wind parts are based on Mozart's original, with a clarinet replacing the flute, but that the orchestral parts were added later by somebody else to fit the solo parts - which no longer survive in their original form. As far as I know, this conclusion has not been seriously challenged. Levin's reconstruction of the original has been recorded and has been uploaded to KZfaq.

So the solo parts were found and someone composed the orchestral music. It would have to be a master the equal of Mozart as the orchestral parts are superlative. Hard to believe.

Thanks for all your postings. I feel certain that another user who posted below is right-these recordings are in the public domain? Otherwise, how would so many others be able to upload all the recordings they do-popular and classical-without running afoul of Facebook? Have you ever had any problems? Just curious. I'm grateful for the postings a well, but the altered pitch does drive me a little crazy lol. --D.

I'm thinking that this is the piece that inspired Carl Nielsen to write his wind quintet. According to the Nielsen Society's website, he heard the four winds rehearsing "Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante" (the site doesn't say which one) with a pianist over the phone. Can anybody confirm this?
