I used this setup recently when i played a show for Analogue Haven in Southern California. I actually had a ton of fun with it and im probably going to start slowly converting a lot of my Octatrack things to this!

Behind all this there's one important thing: you have a gig. :) That's a huuuuge factor that naturally puts many things in place, makes you separate the important from the unimportant, what is really required, what works or not, etc. There are many people out there who try to start making music, a little bit of this and a little bit of that, they get gear, make something, but quite often, ultimately nothing coherent comes out. Because they don't have a gig. I feel that the biggest possible favor anyone could do is, organize a time and a place where people can perform for an actual audience. The water starts flowing! It can be something as small as a family get-together, a birthday party, something in school for kids, anything. Even the existence of gigs somewhere can serve the same purpose - if people can _dream_ of having a gig, it can guide their music-making and their whole future.

MPC1K or 2.5K with JJOS is basically endgame for hardware midi sequencing/sampler. It's an incredible production tool that has not lost its utility over the years. Sold my pyramid awhile back, still on the Cirklon list, but past those it's still top in my book.

Hey! You said something profound. 15:18 "That's where creativity lives--in struggle." I keep getting reminded that having limits to push up against and struggle with is good, and keeping all your options open is often actually a bad thing, which seems counter-intuitive but it keeps getting proven true. It's like... having limits gives you a structure that you can use almost like scaffolding for your creativity. A finite, well-understood space of possibilities, versus a limitless space where everything is possible, is your friend. I think that, as much as anything else, is why a lot of people like to get away from their DAW. The DAW is too powerful. The space of possibilities too vast. Often a selection of a few well-understood, dedicated-function tools is better. "Creativity lives in struggle." That was well-said. Very succinct.

I love what you make, including the beat in this video, and whatever you find helps you make the stuff that's just what fits for you. You even mention using instruments where you have to creatively overcome the limitations, which some people aren't able to do so well. Keep it up! Loving all of this.

You'd be surprised how unlimited this is, though! It's a midi sequencer with almost unlimited tracks, it's got inputs and audio recording for recording midi tracked instruments, etc etc. It's 90% of a DAW! Just no really long form recording, which is not a huge deal unless you want to add a vocalist or something similar

Quality video as always Ricky :-) I used to own an MPC1000 and I stupidly sold it. After really missing it I thought long and hard and ended up buying the MPC Live. I still miss the 1000 lol. The Live sounds awesome and the effects are amazing, it’s really good. You can power 2 x USB powered synths from it and run them through the internal FX, this means I can have the MPC and my Bass Station 2 fully portable. I do miss a few of the immediate functions of the 1000 and I think the 1000 still looks really cool, thinking practically though, the Live wins for me.

And you are right with limitations and gear. I like to use hardware for a concrete function. Sometimes I think "this machine can do much more tricks...I should try do this or that on stage next time" but at the end live performing it's about (in my opinion) been comfortable and transmit.... I meet connect with the people .... And if you are playing a very complex setup you lost your connection with your audience. Good work! Nice video!!

Not sure why more people don’t utilize the MPC in relation to Eurorack especially folks performing live music. It’s an awesome tool for marring Euro with your other midi capable hardware synths. I’m at the point where I feel I have the perfect set up for me. I have mpc midi A out going to an RK004 that branches to 6 hardware synths. Midi B out goes to a Polyend Poly where i can run up to 8 channels out of cvgate, pitch, and modulation to euro. I run all kinds of sequencers through the 2 mpc midi ins. Apps, hardware sequencers, midi controllers. This allows you the flexibility to bring just about any kind of sequencer to eurorack. By running it through the mpc you can build full tracks recording midi data and modulations. Thats in addition to being able to add samples to the tracks as well. Gone are the limitations of rack space for sequencers and all the $$ needed to buy them. The negatives, you sacrifice the ability to modulate the sequencer and you have to toy with the transpose to get the pitch right to euro. An MPC, RK004, and Polyend poly is an awesome studio set up.

I know a few other people also doing something like this, seems like it makes sense. Although it’s not a sampler, as far as sequencing goes, the five12 Vector does everything you pointed out and a whole lot more (probability, internal and external modulation, sub sequencers, as many different programs within a song per track as you wants), has tons of both cv out and midi out, and very logical functionality, hi res displays. I think it’s one of the best sequencers ever made. I was on the Cirklon waiting list for a year, but got off it once I got my Vector.

More old-school: make an SP303 video :) Nice done with MPC1000, I always wanted buy one for the limitation and simplicity. Ended by buying an SP303, very limited gear but so much fun.

I have just recorded similar live performance. Instead of modular I use Elektron Model:Samples. Still amazing!

Hey Ricky, Love your videos. We use a lot of the same gear! Question, I would love to see how you have the camera setup from a BTS perspective. We film a lot of live jams and area always looking for new ways to compose our shots. Love From Chicago

I’ve been using the mpc 2500 with JJOS for years. I love it. I’m curious why you went with the 1000 vs 2500 other than size? Great videos by the way.
