Good video. My advice to everyone is to keep things simple. In the early 90s my MIDI setup was way too complex nessitating an extra MIDI out port on my Atari ST. All my synths and controllers were connected all the time. The complexity got in the way of the music. Now I just pick a couple of instruments and put them together as needed.

@@LanzaMartineta thanks! Interesting. I don’t know that I’ve seen a guitar with a USB output. With that said, I don’t believe the MPC is setup to accept audio over USB. I could be wrong, so it’s worth a shot. But I would suggestion going from the guitar, into a DI, then into the audio input on the MPC. That should work just fine. You could then setup an audio track to record the guitar. I hope that helps.

This was extremely helpful. I now have my AKAI MPC acting as a sound module for my 1988 AKAI EVI1000 ‘valve’ wind controller. Oskar, basically you connect each synth audio output to your mixer then the stereo output of the mixer to the MPC audio inputs. If you were playing live (instead of recording to the MPC) the MPC output would go to a pair of your mixer inputs and the mixer output would go to the PA system.

This was great! Since I received the Live 2 I was searching for a fairly simple way to control AND record the audio from my Analog Four Mk2. I woke up to this when I refreshed my KZfaq home page. I am curious about the setup screen though. What are the settings supposed to be for the SYNC and TRACK icons on the MPC? I’m still new to this but you make everything look really simple. If I could see a closeup of what the setup screen on the MPC looks like that might help. Thank you so much for doing this. Your editing and presentation is professional. Now if you could just pour all of that knowledge to me via mind meld, it would be awesome! lol Keep it up, sir! And now I shall subscribe!

Thank you for such an extensive and clear explanation of MIDI on MPC v2.8. One question that has been asked multiple times on the Akai support forum is 'foot pedal control', and this too can be achieved with MIDI - specifically with MMC Play/Stop/Rec/etc messages. A USB (or DIN) MIDI foot pedal can send these into the MPC, either with a commercial unit (such as a Morningstar) or a DIY solution (my favorite is "OpenDeck" on GitHub).
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Although I haven't tested those controllers or a footpedal controller in general, if you can midi learn it, then from the controller's perspective, it should work. The midi learn feature is rather capable, but specifically can it do Play, Stop, Rec, I'm not 100% certain. Scrolling through the assignable parameters, I see Rec Arm, is an option. I see Song and Project's have assignable parameters too, but I'm not sure without further research. I can look into it and I'll comment back if I figure it out.
@burnerphone361
@burnerphone361 4 жыл бұрын
@@OllieLoops MMC is predefined, it will not need a 'MIDI learn'. There is a section in the MPC's MIDI preferences to receive (and/or send) MMC, once enabled that play button on your Keystep should function.

Gotcha. Well, if you’re able to control the parameter via a midi controller, that may actually be expected behavior. Input to the parameter is coming from another source, so the feedback loop (to the display) may not be programmed to account for changes from outside sources. That’s my best guess. I would think that that is a bug and you could report it if you wanted. Otherwise, know that the feedback on the display may not be accurate. I hope that helps.

@@OllieLoops thank you! I may be attempting to do something that’s impossible? Lol so, the MPC, as you know, has a built in chord engine. I’m attempting to configure my setup to where I can record those midi notes and they also playback the sound(s) from my Juno at the same time and not just record the notes. However, I also want to have the option to record midi notes directly from the keyboard on the synth into the MPC, if I choose too. I’ll spare you the setups I’ve attempted because I think all of my settings on both devices were wrong. Thankfully, I have a feeling I’m really close and your video helped me understand maybe where I’ve went wrong.
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops Жыл бұрын
@@0072gldnfngr At a high level, I would say that you would want to connect the two via USB, otherwise, you would need two midi (5) pin din cables, one from each input to output to connect the devices. Once you have that set, create a dedicated track and program on the MPC to correspond with the synth. Arm the track. If you program midi notes on the MPC, they should play on the synth. You can either route audio back to the MPC to a dedicated audio track, or to an external mixer. Because the midi track is armed, it should allow you to play notes on the synth which can be recorded into the midi track. I hope that helps.

@@OllieLoopsPDATE: Turns out, I didn’t fully understand my issue. Lol. 😅 Seems I’ll have to continue digging thru various threads on the Juno X. Pains of developing a hybrid setup I guess. All good. That said, your video was still extremely helpful in helping me understand Midi. I’ve never used it in a “DAWless” setup. My only question to you at this time would be, is it possible to record midi (in or out) to multiple tracks at once? For the sake of my workflow, I would like it if I didn’t have to “Duplicate” multiple tracks. If I have to, it is what it is. However, I figure it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

Great question. I know you can connect a midi controller to the iPad for external control. I would assume getting the camera kit or USB C to A adaptor would allow you to integrate with an iPad and mpc. You could then run audio into a mixer or from the iPad into the mpc.

@@OllieLoops Cool, you responded :) I might as well take my chances: can you tell me if it's possible to send notes to a synthesizer by using a MIDI USB keyboard that is connected to the MPC? Maybe you even showed it in this video and it went over my head. I can't seem to figure it out currently
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 3 жыл бұрын
@@user1756 hey, yeah that is possible. How is the synth connected? Basically, you need to set up your midi channels, routing and midi programs and you should be set. It's all in the video. Check it out and let me know if you're having trouble.

Would you have any advice on connecting the force to the mpc for the purpose of using the 64 pads on the force while keeping the mpc as the main? I really love the force but I love the mpc workflow, it’d be dope to be able to chop samples and not have to switch banks.
@OllieLoops

Thanks for your comment. That would be an interesting pairing. I’m not sure how to do that however. I might suggest contacting Akai’s support to see if it’s possible. Best of luck.

I am looking to connect my mpc one to a fader port 8 or x touch. I wonder which one will work better at at all with mpc. Also I would love for akai to create its own mixer controller with faders and a sound card and ability to multitrack into the mpc one. I know is not a lot to ask. Since tascam model 8 already does this. It’s only missing the motorized faders

This really helped me a lot. If I want use a keyboard synth as a midi controller for my mpc live 2 to control instrument plug ins, other external synths and the keyboard synth it’s self how could I do that
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops Жыл бұрын
You could do that by setting up midi channels for each device that you wish to control. On the synth/controller, you would then switch midi channels to control different devices in the chain. Hope that helps.

thanks for making this video super well done! would you know how to use a sustain pedal to act as the kick ie allocate to a pad in any way?
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! There are some foot pedals that are midi either via USB or 5 pin din. That should work for what you're looking to do. You would just midi map it like you would any other controller. A typical sustain pedal alone won't be able to interface and midi map like other controllers can.

Great, i tried it and it works great! Thanks! Is it possiple to change the midi notes of the pads on my Akai LPD 8 controller without the software?? ❤
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops Жыл бұрын
Thanks! According to the quick start guide, you can change the midi note value from 0-127 without the editor software. Assuming that changing that value, it could allow you to change which midi note is assigned to the pad. However, it looks like the editor software is likely the best way to edit these values, if you can connect the controller to a computer.

really good tutorial, i was personally suprised when i connected my Novation ReMOTE 25 (which i am unable to get functioning on windows 10) it suddenly was recognized by the MPC and even got the name right away. Though i am having issues with getting some knobs on my ReMOTE to send data, my mpc recognizes them when i turn the different ones, but no data is being sent.
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Ok, to follow along with your situation, you connected the Novation to the MPC and the keys work, but the knobs and sliders don't do anything? If you tap midi monitor at the top of the main page, you should see feedback for all knobs, buttons, sliders and keys coming from the Novation. If not, you will want to troubleshoot the Novation. If so, you will need to use the Midi Learn feature and assign parameters to the knobs and sliders. It won't be pre-mapped. This video shows how to do that. I hope that helps!

@@OllieLoops Yea, its receiving the CC data from the knobs when i turn them, i can see the light flashing, but when i go into midi learn and turn the knob, its not changing the data value. Also yes it is receiving note data from the keys including the velocity, but thats about it.

Awesome video!!! I have a question in regards to the External Synth section. Let's say the external synth is a key board (Yamaha Montage etc...), and it's setup like your example, USB from MPC to Synth, and then Stereo Out to Stereo in on MPC. You showed how you can control the synth from the MPC, but could you also somehow record midi notes using the keyboard from the synth into a sequence and it's own sounds, edit it, and then record it into an audio track? If so that would be great!!!!
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, usb midi is bidirectional. If you play notes on the synth, they will be recorded into the mpc, assuming the mpc has recording or overdub engaged. So you can play ones on the mpc or keyboard of the synth. Hope that helps.

So I was trying to hook my Roland Fantom from its output 1 into the MPC Live’s input 1 so I can write notes into the MPC for it’s built in synths, from my fantoms keys. But also wanted to have another midi cable going from my MPC Live’s output 1, into my Korg Minilogue’s input so that I can also switch over to a midi track on my MPC and play/write notes with the sounds from my Korg, using my Fantom’s keys. This used to be no problem when I was using the Roland FA 06 but now that I’m using the Fantom it seems more complicated for some reason. I was trying last night, to have 2 separate tracks one using the hype engine and the other track as a midi channel to use my Korgs sounds but when I would switch over to the midi channel I would hear both the hype and the Korg when I press my fantoms keys. I just want to be able to switch back and forth tracks on my MPC to get to each sound individually like I used to be able to. EDIT: So I just had an idea, would it work easier this way if I routed the midi from my Fantom output 1 into my Korg Minilogues input, then go output from my Korg into my MPC’s Input? I might still hear both sounds at the same time but I would just have to turn down the volume of the Korg on my mixer when I’m writing notes on the Hype track, and then when I write out the notes for my Korg I’ll do it on my fantoms sequencer. then when I’m satisfied with the pattern I’ll just have to play it back alone and sample it immediately to put into an audio track on the project in my MPC. Either way I always had to sample my tracks from the Korg to get it into my project. The only difference is I was able to have those 2 separate tracks before on the MPC where I hit play and each individual track would play the perspective sounds assigned to each track. When if I do that now, when both tracks would have a different midi pattern and both tracks would probably be playing both sounds over both of those patterns, If that makes sense.
