Hey everyone,
Anubis and I decided to team up on this topic and break it down into two separate but equal segments. I will be covering: Using Midi Packs In Standalone Mode, for the MPC X, MPC LIVE, and MPC ONE, while he will be covering the same topic for the DAW users. After running a series of different tests, we made a few discoveries, so grab your popcorn and a cold drink and join us as we both break it all down.
Be sure to stop by Anubis's channel: • AKAI MPC SOFTWARE - MP... after watching this video to see how he goes about explaining Midi Packs, and using Midi files in a DAW.

I just worked out you can load a whole standard midi file and assign a different plug in to each individual track. I used to play my midi tracks though my Roland keyboard then record them through a Roland br1600. This little Akai has opened the door for creativity. I was actually just looking into this. I have had my Live for about a year and a half and always struggled with how to explain the difference between a track and a program. Yesterday, something struck me, a track is the midi data, the program is the instrument playing the midi data. This always bugged me that Akai set this up like this, but now that I understand what is really going on here, I took some old stuff I worked on and switched it up. You can take a melody for example and easily change the instrument playing that melody by just changing the program. I have a few MIDI packs from Niko I have been wanting to experiment with, I think I will load them on my new Live 2, which should be on my front door step any minute now...

@joshuagardner894

@@IMakeBeats It's been decent, I've been sampling sounds mostly into it from a Korg Opsix and a few other synths I have lying around and then exporting those from the Live 2 into the PC. I honestly struggle to use the Live 2 for the kinds of music I tend to write, which is mostly natural instruments and orchestral instruments. Im not really a "beat maker" so the architecture of the Live 2 doesn't really work super well for linear writing, you can do it sure, but it's not an ideal environment for that sort of thing. When I need to do sketches and Im not in front of a computer, this is where the Live 2 shines a bit. I can put ideas in on the go and then export the midi tracks into a DAW for use with high quality orchestral sounds, which is the primary reason I bought the Live 2 in the first place. You don't know how many times a musical idea struck me and I had no way to input that idea quickly, the Live 2 solved that problem for me. I realize that this is probably different than the intended use and how most people use the Live 2, but for me, it works well. In all honesty, I wish keyboard workstations had the piano roll / MIDI notation editing capability that the Live 1 / 2 / One / X has, because in my view, that is what really makes the MPC line of products extremely unique; nothing like that exists today. To get an idea of the kind of music I write, here is a piece I wrote a few years ago, my unique arrangement, and if you give it til the third verse, you'll hear an arrangement you've probably never heard before in this well known song. - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n5yqe5CitMCaZKc.html

This is very good information. I just have one question, when in standalone mode and the midi files are imported, can I then save the project a d use it in controller mode ? Standalone mode doesn't have many synth sounds on board.
@IMakeBeats
@IMakeBeats Жыл бұрын
Hey 👋🏾 @Dee Baker appreciate you checking out the channel. Let me say, first that I’m a completely standalone user. So if I knew I was going to be in controller mode I would just add the MIDI files on the computer 💻 and then make my sound selections. My video was from a completely standalone point of view so it was created for the standalone view point. But since MIDI files are only note information, just start in controller Mode instead of being in standalone first. Hope that helped. 👊🏾👍🏾

Well its really not that bad to be honest! To answer ur question, once I load the midi on a track and then load a second midi file, I decide which track will be the main track and I copy all the other midi data from those other tracks one by one ☝️ to the main track. Simple but time consuming process but it works and it’s dope! 💨⚔️

So i found an easier way to work with midi in stand alone. So once you load your midi and figure out how your going to trigger it whether it be baseline, tube synth or electric plug in. You can add what ever effects over the top of it just like a standard sample. Then under edit on sequence. Go to bounce track. Then go back to your main sequence and add your bounced audio to a drum program. And launch your new audio sample. You can then go in and clear your sequence that had midi and rinse and repeat. So you can use a midi for synth one for bass one for melody ect.
