This week, I embark on the construction of an ambitious triple-deck HO-scale model railroad for a client in Minnesota. I won't be building the whole thing, but instead starting with the most complex chunk - an area with two stacked helixes, a pair of staging yards and a maze of other tracks all coming together in one spot.
The track plan for this layout is available here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMd6n91-ra29nHU.html
Follow along as I create what I expect will become an epic model railroad.
If you are interested in my custom model railroad design and construction services, please contact me through my web-site: www.superiormodelrailroads.com

Each time I come back and re-watch this part the more impressive it gets. You explain the process so well and the ideas just keep coming. Fantastic to see the continuing evolution, really four or five different layouts explained in one not over complex presentation.

Oh Peter !! No one but no one out here is judging you for your personal trials and tribulations !! Apology/explanation was never needed !! Whatever you do and what ever makes you tick is 100% always fine with us !!! It's a pleasure to watch your impeccable work unfold !! That said, I do think people miss out on half the fun of a model RR, having the bench and wiring work done for them. This is nothing against you, Peter..I just mean: To me, the carpentry and control system set up I believe should be part of one's experience, that of creating it all, the entire RR by one's self; and the self pride that THAT brings, along with the operating OF a miniature RR, your own scenery and structures, all done by you !! I mean, again, to me, that's part OF model railroading !! Yet, obviously, there ARE individuals out there who don't want to go through that learning curve, or can't for other reasons, and just want to sit back and run a RR !! That's certainly OK, too. And this is where mister ~~~ mpeterII ~~~ comes in !! If you can't build it yourself, best contact Peter !! M, Los Angeles

I very much enjoy your videos. Shorter ones and longer ones. KZfaq is a secondary to your designing and building layouts. It's very understandable that that takes precedence over making videos. I am thankful to you for making the videos sharing what you do. You can only do so much and if the videos are not amazingly perfect don't worry because you put plenty of information about what's going on in this video and showed well enough where you're at with the build. The people that complain about the camera work or editing probably aren't as interested in the content of the video anyway. I guess I could sum up my view about it and say you're doing just fine. I would have never thought to put the track inside the benchwork like you did around the low area to keep it from being so low and leaving room to get under it. I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. Stay well. -Wil 👍

@@mpeterll your opinion what is the best ho track to use and why
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 2 жыл бұрын
@@vicdeandrea8112 I use a mixture of PECO and Micro-Engineering flex-track. They have identical rail cross-sections and therefore work well with the same rail-joiners (I use ME joiners exclusively as they are much smaller and far less obtrusive than Atlas). ME works well for helixes and other areas where a long constant curve is required because there is no tendency for the rail ends to spring outwards and cause a kink. The downside is that it is very difficult to curve it into a smooth easement. For this purpose, I like PECO because both rails slide easily in the ties. I also prefer the appearance of PECO flex-track on visible areas because the ties are the same size as the Fast-tracks turnouts that I use. ME ties are much smaller in cross section, and although they might be closer to scale, they don't look right against the turnouts. PECO turnouts, on the other hand, are cheap and reliable but don't look great - so I use them only in hidden areas.

Peter, do you just use cabinet grade plywood for all your benchwork elements? Do you find the screws hold well in the "end grain" (parallel to the inner plies) better than 1 x 4 dimensional lumber? I know you prefer the cabinet grade plywood due to better stability, but I was just curious if it holds screws well when they are not perpendicular to the plies. I'm familiar with the Midwest Cork Products road bed, but what is the black stuff you are using? Is that a foam based product?
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 жыл бұрын
I don't rely on the screws alone, but glue every joint as well. I pre-drill everything using a compound bit. Even so, I do get an occasional split end. When that happens, I just fill the split with glue and move on. I don't think the benchwork police will arrest me for that.
@CONTAINERMAN68
@CONTAINERMAN68 3 жыл бұрын
Is your bench work homemade or is it that Sievers Railroad pre-made bench work? I only ask because I see those perfectly drilled holes in some of those cross pieces and it looks like Sievers bench work?
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 жыл бұрын
It is all my own benchwork. I drill all the wiring holes on a drill-press prior to assembly because it's easier (and neater), drilling half-way from each side to avoid exit wounds. Neatness counts when I'm building it for a client.

Nicely conveyed, as usual. :-) From an editing perspective, I don't know which product you use for editing, but Mercalli from proDAD could help you should you ever find yourself in this position again. www.prodad.com/Video-Stabilization-for-Professionals-30419,l-us.html Some products include a version of this as standard, but it can also work independently from any package. There are other stabilisation products out there and some may be better, cheaper or whatever. I'm familiar with Mercalli as it's included with the NLE I use. On the downside, I have found that sometimes I need to take the raw footage and stabilise the individual clips and render those, as Mercalli does have an issue if I want to stabilise several pieces in the same video. I can then use those stabilised clips as normal.
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 жыл бұрын
Thank-you for the suggestion. I will have to look into this product. Also, it's nice to occasionally hear from female viewers in this male-dominated hobby. Keep that flag flying for the better-looking half of the population.
