Bates' lines to Anna in the series make me cry. They are soft and sweet, praise akin to humble prayer, the flight of the soul when drawn to love that maintains its purity. Just reading this particular line made me tear up to be quite honest. True affection makes poets of men.

Anna was the first one of the staff to see him as a person not a disability. She stuck by him and refused to see anything but the good in him. So for him there she is to be cherished. No matter what.

Only if the old man is as gentlemanly as Mr. Bates. If he's a scoundrel you'll end up wasting many years of your life waiting for him to get his act together. I think that's why I like Downton Abbey. Mr. Bates and Anna's love story was beautiful and sweet.

I am so happy for you. I've never been married, but I hope to find a wise soul with a heart of kindness like Mr. Bates. I'm 31, and I still want to believe there is a bloke out there waiting for me. A man that is genuine and gentle like our valet here is someone I truly wish to meet and be with in this life. I'd like to experience the kind of love Bates has for Anna: full of loyalty and devotion, brimming with affection, a calming lamp in the night.

It is so beautiful, comforting, and hopeful to see a pure love between two people one that is not based on lust, on money or on an external need but one that comes from inside and because the case the greatest of all. I know they are just characters but I do wish all those that feel the same all happiness in the world because they are the hope allowing love to be the real savior of this so damaged world by so many humans.

That repulses "Mr. Bates" types. They don't want to be pursued, they want to do the pursuing, to court, to take their time to get to know the woman. Also, it takes a strong woman to take on a "Mr. Bates" type due to his baggage.

I loved Anna for the same reasons - she would be a wonderful friend. But I didn't mind Daisy. Anna spoke fondly of her mother a time or two and I got the feeling she came from a loving family, while Daisy told her father-in-law she'd never "been special" to anyone before his son took an interest in her. I think it was said to her father in law. She didn't have the best start in life. But really, despite all the characters' differences there wasn't a single actor or character I didn't enjoy watching.

True but you have to remember, in those days it's very unlikely she'd be seen as a victim of a violent crime. She'd be seen as an adulteress who cheated on her husband/was asking for it/would have fought back if she really didn't want it/any and every pitiful excuse to dismiss how horribly she was hurt. While we know Mr. Bates would never be so cruel, he would have been within his legal rights to get a divorce from her for "infidelity." The probability that reporting it would have negative ramifications for her was higher than the probability of it bringing justice against her rapist.
