With regards to white privilege and racism. I once was boarding a plane in Iceland flying to America. Everyone in the queue was white apart from three black Muslim teenage girls in front of me. I'm cheap, I buy the worst seats on the plane so the majority of people had boarded already without any problem. The first black teenage girl reaches the checkpoint. The officer looks up and says "you have been randomly selected for an extra security check" and the three black girls are moved to one side. An anecdote I know, but it always stands out in my mind.

Profiling is a great example of white privilege. Sure it's an anecdote, but an anecdote that probably surprises few.

Another interesting up𝕓𝕖𝕒𝕥 video! I have almost the same ethnic background some British, mostly Irish and Prussian. My family was unable to trace my mother's grandfather beyond the East Prussian passport. Since you are a history guy, I'll share more with you. His passport said he was Lutheran, but he never talked about Prussia and never went to church. I took a German history class in grad school and found out more about that area. My great grandfather's name, depending on the spelling, could be German, Polish, Russian, Jewish or Lithuanian. That area was included in the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth [or Empire]. However, during the19th Century the Prussians had a pre-holocaust called the Kulturkampf, in order to follow Martin Luther's directive to convert the Jews. I suspect that my ancestor was a victim of the Kulturkampf, but he only spoke and wrote German. As you say, it doesn't matter, though it's interesting because of the history of the area.
@chrisk56512 жыл бұрын
My understanding of Kulturkampf was that it was Bismarck’s attempt, after uniting Germany, to try to unify the German people culturally by weakening the influence of the Catholic Church in Bavaria and other predominantly Catholic areas of the Second Reich.
@JMM33RanMA2 жыл бұрын
@@chrisk5651 Yes, it was pro-Lutheranism, but it was also directed against the Jews. Martin Luther wrote explicitly in "The Jews and their Lies" [in German 𝖁𝖔𝖓 𝖉𝖊𝖓 𝕵𝖚̈𝖉𝖊𝖓 𝖚𝖓𝖉 𝖎𝖗𝖊𝖓 𝕷𝖚̈𝖌𝖊𝖓], that Judaism was to be suppressed, the books and synagogues burned and the people converted to the true Christian faith [Lutheran Protestantism]. They also attempted to Germanize the Slavic and Baltic people. They succeeded in Germanizing the formerly Baltic and Polish East Prussia, but not as much elsewhere. I suppose the later switch to murder was because the conversion method wasn't working well enough, nor completely enough.
@JMM33RanMA2 жыл бұрын
@@chrisk5651 I forgot to mention that the Prussian Kulturkampf started well before the German Unification. My ancestor left Prussia before that. Er hat die beste Entscheidung getroffen! Even though the US wasn't free of Antisemitism in the 1880's, and he gave no hint of being other than Christian, it was better to be here than there.

The percentages really don't matter, unless you know the details. Mine shows Scottish, Irish, etc. but the maps when viewing - it shows Brittiay, and Normandy. Even the English portion pointed to Northern France. Confusing portion is the Celtic portion of history. Of course it does not matter in the long run. Great job. I did lasic, lasted 20 years. I really don't regret it.

I actually took an ancestry test because I wanted to know once and for all what my background was considering I’ve heard people surmise bout this on my behalf and other experiences, (like possibly having Native American ancestry) then my dad had darker features a bit. I’ve been told a few times like “u look jewish” and it made me really curious. I was sort of hoping maybe I was related to the Merovingians as well something interesting. I’m “jewish” lololol...my dad was “white” actually, but I dunno...plus my dad was adopted which only lead to further curiosity.

I'm half with you on people's obsession with their heritage. I 1,000% agree with it being weird that people take any pride in it or hinge any of their own identity on it. However, I do find it really interesting to follow your heritage just for the story and events that led up to you in the present, just out of curiosity and the historical story of it. Basically I find it super interesting in the same way I find any story of historical people and events and how/where it went through time interesting. I don't find it to be any source of pride or identity though, and I think it's silly that some people do. I had nothing to do with it to be proud of, and it has no influence on what I do with my own life. I do find it funny though how your wife got you a gift, and in return you made an hour-long stream about how much you don't care about it and how underwhelming it was lmao. xD

Interesting chat. "White privilege" only exists if the person doing the judging or making the decision is a racist. So while it is someone else causing it, the person being judged is blamed so that makes the person who is judged in this case a victim. It inextricably ties the unsuspecting person to the racist. It is how most victims are treated. They dont get to pick who singles them out and cant control that they get blamed. They certainly dont get to pick what skin tone of features they are born with either. What is worse is that "white" covers many groups with disparate cultures, similar to what the latinx label does and what "black" does. It also puts the onus on the judged person to behave in a different way than anyone would when being treated well such as the need to apologize.
