Mr. Creosote, taken from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. Terry Jones picked this as part of his Top 10 Monty Python Movie Moments for Esquire Magazine -
When we first read this scene, out it went in the reject pile. Then, about a month later, John rang me up and said, 'You know that scene in the restaurant? I think it could work.' Of course he'd realized that the waiter was the funny character."

Because of the way the waiter goads him into eating the fatal mint, and the fact that he dives for cover before Creosote even starts to explode, it seems more like the waiter was trying to kill him intentionally.

Mr Creosote had been frequenting the restaurant for years before that fatal day. The morning the waiter had discovered he had just inherited a fortune. He explained to the staff, that Mr creosote would be getting his last meal that evening prepared by his own hand for his final days work at the restaurant as a waiter.

SkilledxFailure John Cleese himself didn't liked the sketch either in the beginning and even rejected it. Then he changed his mind after realizing that the humour from that scene doesn't come from the fat guy vomiting, but from the completely surreal behavior of the waiter.

It's also possible that there was a little extra motivation for him to play Terry J's antagonist in this grotesque sketch. Apparently Cleese was also nominated to play Creosote at first but the role ended up in Terry's hands.

Apparently, this scene grossed out Quentin Tarantino BIG TIME. He admitted in an interview: "When the fat Mr Creosote guy who does all the puking turns up - I remember sitting in the movie theatre thinking, 'If somebody vomits, and I actually smell vomit while I'm watching this, I'm just going to hurl!" So I guess even he has his standards.

And yet I'm not sure if I've ever seen anyone puke in his movies. They certainly don't feature projectile vomiting. I wonder if this was the first movie or show to feature this? Anyone know, I don't remember this starting to become a more nasty trend comedies til maybe the end of 90s. It's definitely gotten worse since, or at least up til they stopped making comedies almost completely for awhile. And then the ones coming out were crap, but I digress.

..When you hear ambitious beginners talking about art, it´s always either great ("good") OR mediocre ("I could do this so much better if I just wanted to"; crap). In such terms, this in my opinion is definitely "great", (even I never saw the full movie and I think there is surely a further context for this sketch there somewhere). Making an extreme mess with eating has been there as a theme since Petronius at the latest, but here in 1983 you still get the impression of truly pioneer work!!

This is Monthy Python at its best! No holds barred (anything goes), bizzare and making fun of the pretentious middle/upper class. All in one (gross) package! If it's no holds barred in the sketch, the funny thing (if you look at the full version) is the "holding back" that both the guests and the staff at the restaurant do, just not to offend the all important, VIP, filthy rich, very regular guest Mr Creosote, even to the point of themselves throwing up! Gross, yes, but you would have to be a braindead zombie if you don't find anything in this sketch funny(as some commenters). And the mint wafer self-combustion at the end is just a classic laugh explosion! Love how John dives for the trenches(like the tiny mint was a hand grenade). The regular guest "MR Creosote" problem solved for the restaurant in the most devious way possible. The first time I saw it I just died with laughter. Genius!

Hehe! That comment is funny. People who are offended by anything. The humour, the comments, how another person look at you on the train. Anything! Why should I consider something that is an opinion about humour? I mean, why so "dead" serious? This is just a funny sketch! It's not my problem that you and many others are offended by Pythons silly humour that doesn't hurt anybody watching it (well besides you. You are REALLY angry, aren't you?) You don't have to understand it or laugh at it. I just don't understand why, that is all! But, OK, I take it back. You are not a Brain-dead Zombie. Brain-dead maybe, but not a Zombie!

Oh my god, brings back so many memories of when I watched this as a kid. I love the puke dripping out of the menu while the waiter's asking about the drinks.

TERRY JONES: "One sketch that nearly didn't make it to the final script was Mr. Creosote scene. Because when Michael red it out...it was just after lunch, I think. We'd thought it was our best sketch so we kept it back to lead with after lunch...and everybody just hated it and it went on the reject pile". JOHN CLEESE: "It was red out, I think by Michael, I knew that Michael and Terry thought that it was an exceptionally funny piece, and it completely laid and egg, it was very strange. It was part of that pile of material that wasn't good enough". JONES: "I think about a month later we got a telephone call from John. And he said "I've been reading that Mr. Creosote sketch...I think it'd be quite funny" ". CLEESE: "I suddenly realized that the head waiter could be a wonderfully funny character. So we (Graham Chapman and him) rewrote it and built it slightly more carefully; the building of it was a bit more chaotic, so we kind of piled it on: one disgustingness at a time".

I have seen this skit so many times, I practically have it memorized. It never stops being funny, and for the life of me, I don't know why. You'd think after 20 years I would stop laughing, but no.

I remember when the movie was released to theatres. I went to see it and there were a group of three young women in front of me that were obvious M.P. fans (very unusual for females) . They were laughing and enjoying the movie until Mr. Creosote came along--at least one of them had to step out.
