How Britain Starved Ireland. The Great Famine, also known as the Irish Potato Famine, occurred in the mid-19th century, from 1845 to 1852. It was a devastating period in Irish history marked by a catastrophic failure of the potato crop, which was a staple food for the majority of the population. What was the British roll in this and how was it facilitated.

I'm a Dubliner myself .. great to see people realise that, it wasn't the poor working class that enslaved or conquered land. It was always the elites. When it comes down to it, we have more in common than we realise... Society is changing rapidly and with AI etc more jobs will disappear and wage decrease & stagnation

That's not true and there is objective proof that your mischievous anti Irish government/ anti democratic comment regarding Irish government officials supposedly being mainly landlords - NOT TRUE. they all declare their property and commercial interests on their official Register of Interests. Anyone in Ireland who can service a mortgage can be a landlord and not publicly declare it, so government officials don't own and lease more property than other professionals on similar wages do, but are obliged to declare it. You are willing to expose your lazy thought processes just to cause artificial non Irish resentment and anti democratic sentiment.

That's true and can be seen by the Irish prominence in Unicef, Band Aid and Live Aid lead by Irishman Bob Geldof , and all the anti poverty and anti starvation work that Bono and U2 feel obligated to initiate and sustain. Genocidal famine leaves a deep feeling of shame at relative powerlessness against a malign neighbour/colonial power and Irish rage at arbitrary injustices imposed on smaller nations - UK to Ireland and Russia against a peaceful democracy in Ukraine. Russia is using Iran to sarcrifice Palestine and Yemen in a war against Israel/Western democracies, purely to divide US and EU resources in their attempts to defend Ukraine from aggressive Russian intolerance of a successful Pro-European democracy on their autocratic doorstep.

a lot of the middleman were irish who worked as agents for the british absentee landlords.I disagree with the premise it didn't begin with malthus it played apart but it goes back much further to the diposession of the native irish nobility and the penal laws which meant that the irish had lost total ownership of the land and also meant that there was an unusual proportion of the society peasants which left the country very vulnerable to a famine.

The blight was all over Europe, not just Ireland. So if English had not evicted them out of their homes, taken their land , and farms , but at same time made them " work" same lands to produce an abundance of food, which they took to feed the English planters on land first, and than exported to English Army and else where.. So lost homes...lost land, crops taken ...so had nothing , no where to live, only food was cheap spuds, the ones that got the blight ... So everywhere else in Europe had all the other food they grew to live off.. Also all livestock was exported too. Even when it first started, they turned a blind eye, still demanding rent for little areas they lived and grew potatoes.. They did nothing, until some of the good English landlords told Englsnd thousands are dying...so instead of giveing aid..they set up workhouse which could be miles from anywhere so exhausted and starving had to first walk there for days, than had to break rock and build roads, and walls for miles to no where with no food yet ..and payment at end of week..so many did not survive alive to get payment, and would not pay any family left as by week. So that accelerated death toll (the plan)... Which increased the amount of humans to be sold because would have turned to theft of food... Another scheme was soup kitchen again far and few near so had to walk miles to get to them, and unless converted to Prodastants were not allowed to have soup...and Irish Catholics were to faithfull and stubborn to convert.. England only started helping after 2 ish years ,when aid and food started arriving ..which at first would not allow in, than increased import tax so was not attainable to pay for its entry.....any where large donations came they refused so the queen not embarrassed as she only donated £1000.. They did not cause the blight, which caused thousands to die around Europe...but were in the process of genocide of the Irish population prior to it, so it just accelerated the process 10 fold.

Long long before the Irish potato famine, and long long after the famine, the brits used ireland as its glorified allotment. Regularly depriving Ireland of its main source of food. The potato famine dident help matters as potatoes were the main source of sustenance. Ireland wasn't alone in this. The brits had conquered the world and drained all of its colonies of much needed resources.

The Empire always picked the most ruthless local kings or rulers and elevated them with fancy titles and weapons so they will voluntarily do all the dirty work in return. In Leinster it was the Fitzgerald's, backed by the Empire's might, who kept The Pale safe by oppressing their Gaelic neighbours. The Empire expanded on this idea when they kicked the trans Atlantic slave trade into overdrive too...

There are many misconceptions about the so called potato famine in Ireland. There never was a potato famine as such because even at its supposed height Ireland fulfilled all of its import obligations to foreign countries. What there certainly was , and it is graphically illustrated throughout written history was gross mismanagement. This cause of famine falls on the shoulders of the British. who were the landowners like Trelawney who was a civil servant who seemed to adopt responsibility as proxy home secretary, he bore an incredible amount of power. Irelands population were subsistance farmers who never caught on the up to date farming methods. They were therefore evicted by absent (And irresponsible ) landlords

Never let the facts interfere with a good story. There were vastly more people driven out of The Republic of Ireland since 1911 because of economic incompetence of the Southern Irish government than were driven out in the whole period of the potato famine. It’s very useful as deflection weapon though, for the government and Irish Republicans generally to blame everything on the potato famine. As usual, also serves to distract the Southern Irish population from their hardships, by demonising the British. The Dublin parliament was responsible for exports from Ireland but Dublin traders prioritised their profits over basic human compassion. As did the Irish and Anglo Irish farmers who continued to export their produce while those around them, their neighbours, starved. The English were way too busy making money for themselves to care about anyone, let alone the Irish. They didn’t control the trade from Dublin port in any case, so their impact was negligible. Empty Ireland today, has absolutely nothing to do with the potato famine, it is caused entirely by the economic hardship of the Southern Irish population and continues to this day. High cost of living, high cost of housing, low working class wages, massive wealth gap, expensive healthcare and no facilities outside the greater Dublin area, equals high levels of outmigration of the Southern Irish, the young cannot afford to live there. An economic situation that also encourages high levels of immigration, as unlike the locals, immigrants receive subsidised housing which allows them to get an economic foothold. Not a good time to be young and Southern Irish in the last one hundred years, as most of their young have had to leave for the hated UK or America, and are now being replaced by foreigners. Some areas having a 75% drop in their population since 1911, shows no sign of changing.

thanks for this upload reaction. as an irishman, we have had generational inequality between those planted who were protestants by the english who were given the power roles, and this was handed down. the native catholics for hundreds of years weren't even able to vote because the ruling british/unionist class passed a law that you needed to own property to vote. its so much better now thankfully. now the british government dont want anything to do with ireland but theres still a large number of people who want to be called british so they feel roped in, for the british government, northern ireland is a hassle to them. so i dont mind, if u want to be called british and live in ireland its ok. equality is better now. but the british have left a trail of destruction in many countries that still has ramifications to this day. yet when an immigrant moves in to england they want them kicked out....but they invented immigration into countries other than their own. lol

Its inaccurate to say the Irish are Pro Palestinian alone, most Irish people support countries achieving democratic independence through preferably peaceful means, because thats is a struggle Ireland understands better than most. Hence Irish support for a 2 state solution which recognizes the right of both Israel and Palestine to co exist peacefully as two independent democracies. Arbitrary colonial arrogance in the set up of both those countries created the running sore we see on our tvs every night, just as the British colonial overhang represented by the partition of Ireland was meant to be a debilitating running sore to deflect/ destabilise Ireland - which is why our Peace Process in 1998 underwritten by the EU and US helped to defend Irelands peace and prosperity under the latest dishonourable British assault- Brexit. A similar Peace process for Palestine and Israel needs to be underwritten by the major powers including the until now largely disinterested wealthy Arab nations.

When the famine started the British government paid enormous amounts to alleviate the famine and the British public donated even more in charity payments. We are talking about billions of pounds. I admit the government payments were stopped before they should have been but they did provide enormous help so suggesting it was because the British treated the Irish as lower forms of human beings is the usual Irish victim culture. The blight only ruined one strain of potatoes, plenty of other strains of potatoes still grew. Ireland produced abundance of food. It was know as the garden of Europe for its produce and livestock. They without doubt knew what crops to grow. Problem was their land was taken from them and owned by The British landowners, they still made them farm, but confiscated all produce from them and fed the English and Scottish planters and soldiers, exported the rest around Europe and to the armies on the Empire. The only food for natives was the cheap spud which was one with blight. The rest of Europe had all the other crops they grew and livestock to live on, but that luxury was denied to the Irish by their rulers.

The land in Ireland was confiscated and given to English Soldiers as payment for their services to the Crown. It's a very long history, the starvation was the culmination of oppressive colonizers methods of destruction of a whole people. The Anglo Irish as you called them were in fact English by blood. They (Landlords) were also MPs in the English Parliament so any laws or rights passed there were for their own benefit. The Irish had no power whatsoever. 98% of the Landlords were English. There are mass graves in every village and town in Ireland as witness to this great coverup. In Ireland there were 11 million people not 8 million. At least 4 million died not 1 million. Children under 5 were not accounted for on the census. Pew counts were unreliable as were the census themselves carried out by English officials who became a great embarrassment to England because of their tawdry work. England then destroyed the Irish census records from 1860, 70, 80 and 90, they claimed for the war effort or to maybe bury evidence of a mass genocide. People saying that they didn't diversify have very little understanding of the conditions and oppression the Irish lived under. For instance they were only allowed one acre of the poorest land to live on and pay exorbitant rents from. When they made improvements to the land it was taken from them. It's not a simple history. Also be careful whose history books you are reading. As you know the victors are experts at distorting history and hiding truths.

But, Ireland was part of the UK at the time, so why would British people starve other British people ?? Are you saying that a pan-_European potatoe blight was sensitive to regional borders and focused on the Irish only??.......this is just Irish lies and propaganda.....are you seriously suggesting that people in Ulster, Scotland, Wales and England didn't starve as a result of this potatoe blight which effected most of Europe?? Please read your history.
