The college (university) in Romania was free and is still free with some exceptions. All citizens contribute. Of course there is alternatives like private schools but contrary to US state scholls are better than private.

I was born in 81, I've seen some of it. I caught the hunger, the cold, censorship, no programs on TV .At some point the police suspected a neighbor for collaborating with Radio Free Europe and they arrested and interrogated a bunch of people in the hood , people that had nothing to do with it. They made threats on my mom to say everything she knows or they would take her kid ( me) away .My dad was actually born on Dec 22 , so on his birthday he was at the protests .I remember begging him not to go to Bucharest, fearing that he'd be killed. For months and months after I was still afraid of ''terrorists'', being shot randomly in the street or rigged toys or sweats .There were rumors circulating everywhere about all kinds of crazy things. The 90s were chaotic , dangerous and amazing . I remember when we got cable TV in our neighborhood that the streets were empty for a week. Everyone was watching everything . Thanks for another great video Mr. Giant !

Sorry, what means "collaborating with Freee Europe". I was 27 in '89 and I remember since I was 7('69) my neighbours listening "Free Europe" to the maximum volume and no-one care about. What I remember is that Radio Free Europe use to tell us whats good and what's wrong and blame Ceausescu for turning the communism from what they wanted to be, an international movement called "commiternism", in to a nationalistic movement. The jews russian commisars killed hundreds of thousands and millions of people in east Europa, especially in Ukraine before ww2 and in Romania after ww2, in terms of rushing the development and preparing the countries for the next step of globalisation. The 80'th was the most grey years but the independence we gain then we will never have again. And this is the only reason of everything happening before and after '89. The abortion interdiction is a nationalistic view and a have to do with the demographic politics all the sociologists knowing that a prosperous country needs a strong new generation.

and making a parallel between "yesterday" and today. there are those who want a change and those who are content with what is. the bureaucracy is still heavy here, low salaries with prices like in the west even higher, there is still corruption but which state doesn't have it, more visible or not. we can go to other countries without any problem, as long as you have money. I mentioned the school. and free speech.. for me it is fenced off wherever I go in the world. democtation, however, must exist. to be listened to and respected. although the world is ruled by power, let's not forget that we, the people, are dumber. I live in a country of fighters and resourceful people. I am not ashamed of where I come from, but only of those who judge easily. there are more and more people who emigrate, they don't do it for pleasure but for something better. with fear and hope. it doesn't matter what country you're from, the feeling is the same for everyone. 😉

I'm not romanian, but I find the way Romania got rid of Ceausescu inspiring. In shows just how powerful ordinary people can be, when they unite. The speech from the balcony, when people started to grow restless and impatient with their dictator was very powerful in my opinion. You could see in his face the moment he realized that he was not all powerful anymore.

I am a Romanian and have US friends, and it's amazing how they don't realize anti-abortion (and not only) for us Eastern Europeans reopens wounds. We are relieving decades of pain in our history. Romanians are not violent, our history is as it is since we are at the crossroads (maybe we are the crossroad between East and West). Still, this you saw, this is the only mass shooting. And to better understand this revolution, for Western societies to understand it, Karl Marx was just an idealist behind all of it. It's more like Orwell's 1984, all is an illusion, and the sky will be red if communism wants to. Everyone not agreeing with the regime was deported, imprisoned, or simply killed (their close one never knew). Communism tried to create an ideal communist individual, by any imaginable mean. If you wonder why the young university students revolted first, they were the first persons that should be re-educated first into new communist humans. Some parts of literature (one of Paul Goma's books, if I remember correctly- Paul Goma was a Romanian dissident back then) say the Russians were scarred by the cruelty in Romanian gulags. If you want to react to these movies (or parts of them), you will have a voice and more visibility: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h8uDY8iLvbXFp2Q.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9aJgKV1s9vZp30.html

Old soviet Era Communism is different than modern communism that is showing its teeth in the West or maybe elsewhere. That's why Abortion can be a 180degree difference. For example in Russia right now I bet that abortion is not seen with good eyes even if probably legal, and if things continue to go badly in the area I bet they will make it illegal if it isnt already. The Old style of communism was more nationalist focused, also had very strong borders, if you tried to flee Romania they would shoot you on the spot... or enter it. The "modern" far left is different, it disregards border often, very pro even illegal immigration , turning a blind eye, and obviously pro abortion as it has no nationalist element, in fact sometimes it almost feels like they hate their nation.

Hi Mr. Giant again ! The meetings in Yalta ( 1944) and Malta ( 1988 ) decided the fate of Romania !😢 The smalls countries are like a golf balls in the hands of big powers. I lived in communism 23 years and I hate it fron all my heart. 😢 The problem is the younger generation is returning to the same extremist mentality, but under different names. Another problem is that Rusian empire is closed to Romania and eastern Europe, and russians have the same imperialist mentality !😢 USA must to support Ukrain because maybe Romania will follow after the destruction of Ukraine. 😢 Respectly, Cristian

Each socialist country had its own view of ideology, and some countries were forced to take over the power of the Communist Party because other parties collaborated with the Nazis, and in addition, only the Communists had weapons after the Soviets defeated the Nazis. However, Romania was among the poorest countries in Europe before communism, during and now after communism it is among the poorest.

The thing is communism is state controlled. Thus when the Chinese Communist Party decided that over population was a problem they installed the one child policy. They put no restriction of abortion and would punish those who had a second child without permission which encouraged abortions. In Romania they decided they needed more population so they prevented abortions. Governments always try to set the rules they think are best. State colleges in the US were once very inexpensive but the states underfunded them so expense increased for the students. In 1966 working class people could afford to send kids to the less expensive commuter colleges without loans. The free colleges in communist countries were restricted to government approved programs. Colleges in the US can charge exorbitant fees for programs that will never lead to jobs where the loans can be repaid leading to the student debt crisis. At the same time trade schools can lead to very well paid careers.

Romanian communism doesn't resemble with any other kind of communism because was a national socialism in disguise and very hard ANTI SOVIET after SOVIET-China split. president government etc open to west , but a very strict close door for citizen by government securitate to avoid any kind of capitalist ideology to spread. It worked for a while because Ceausescu still stand as first and last modern politician with 0 international debt and that's a fact in comparison In US currently that debt it's $33 trillion but with a cost of quality of life, people had money but nothing to spend on it because everything was strict and imposed or just illegal to own like capitalist goods and if by any chance some neighbor report your ass to securite with something like '' that guy have more than it should '' you were in a big trouble.. either interrogation, confiscated, imprisoned and sometimes all of above.

Hi Mr. Giant. all respect for what you are doing and trying to figure out Romania and the Romanians. The guy has some kind of an idea of how tings were, but it is not the reality. Yes, college education was free, but the number of seats was limited in each and every area, depending on the need of the economic sectors for highly educated specialists. So, in order to earn a seat in the college one had to go through highly competitive exams for admission. If one , for example, was to sit through exams to be admitted into the medical school, they had to have a great level of knowledge of the human anatomy, chemistry. biology. The marks were between 1 and 10 (top). You could often see on the list of admitted candidates marks like 10.00, then 9.99, then 9.98, and so on until someone with top mark like 9.65 would fail just because the number of seats was 34 and the competition so high. If one failed three courses in the first year, they lost their college seat. Upon graduation, based on the same competitive system, all graduated from all the colleges with same profile across the country were ordered from the country-wide top mark to the lowest and they were presented with a list of jobs across the country. Top marks had priority in choosing and they chose the first, followed by the others according to their graduating mark. According to the law you had to go and work at this job for at least three years, if you didn't, you had to pay the state back the counter-cost of tuition plus some penalty. This is how each and every corner and remote settlement of Romania had doctors, teachers. vets, etc. Right now, where I live, I haven't had a family doctor and haven't seen a doctor in years, because there are none. Thy go where they can get the big bucks to pay back their student loans.b Also, through the duration of what is called in North America "undergraduate" degree the students studied with a focus of 100% on their specialization, unlike here where they cannot take more than 50% , the other 50% being made up by expensive fillers, and then they have to do a so-called Master's which would be useless if students studied thoroughly during their 4-5 years degree. Education meant education and Universities were educational institutions, not business centres. The basis of general knowledge, like foreign languages (at least two, plus Latin(, math, national and international geography, domestic and world history, from ancient to modern one, chemistry, physic, world literature, music, home economics, constitution, biology, anatomy, zoology, botanics, technical and art drawing, physical ed all were taught through grades 1 to 12 (by the way, getting into high school was done the same way as getting into College. Who didn't make it went to vocational schools where they learned skilled trades) . So those years of communism were multifaceted. No one has the right to say they were black or white. We have to be fair and objective, otherwise, once we, the living witnesses of those years are gone, the history will be re-written and it will lie and distort the reality to fit some established narrative

Hello. I'm not speaking from my experience, being 12 years old I didn't really realize what was happening. but being a curious person by nature 😊 I talked about 15 years ago with a man born in 1940. he called the periods of communism at the beginning it was good for those who had nothing afterwards.. it started like this, it depends on where you lived in the city or in the country. in the country you had less control than in the city, since it was not only security, the neighbors were also a problem. they denounced you quickly. they were "patriots". abortion was a serious problem, you ended up in prison and so did homosexuals. but no one bothered the orphans who had nowhere to sleep and nothing to eat or wear. not to mention education. Part 1😅

high school was and still is free and compulsory. but during Ceausescu's time, after high school, if you didn't go to college, you did a specialization and then went to work. but unfortunately in schools it is still based on memorization and not on logic and thinking. it would be too difficult to control. my father was a mechanic on the locomotive and in fact he almost always went to export, from which the western countries also benefited, let's not forget. you could get anything with relationships if you had. bribes were given and now the "tradition" remains. not at all thank you God 😊 ceausescu didn't know what was going to happen, the markets were full when he passed by, he went to the factories to see if the workers were satisfied. they did not dare to say anything that the police sect would have killed him. the ratio on the card appeared after 1982. I asked him what he was doing during that time, he smiled and told me that he was happy that people were still looking for answers. part 2😊

naturally, I wanted his opinion on the subject of the "Revolution" with all due respect to those who met their tragic end at those events. how can people who were afraid to say something in public, to neighbors, sometimes to family members, organize themselves so quickly and in a few days he was executed? communism fell as it had to, like in the rest of Eastern Europe. Romania is a big country, it can be compared to the size of France. it was a coup in his "opinion". what is nostalgic about communism in Romania.. either they forgot or they weren't there or... it was surprisingly good for them. he did not want our generation to have to deal with that system and neither did I for my child.

For example, in Yugoslavia, abortion was accepted as a result of practical rather than ideological considerations. Under communism, healthcare and education were free, despite the fact that for quite some time communist countries had the highest economic growth in the world, even though they had limited access to the richest markets. We must not forget that these were agrarian countries and became industrial within a decade. In the end, the situation began to deteriorate, because politicians began to care only about their positions and no longer about the socialist agenda. The first communists who started the revolution were mostly true ideologues, but later generations began to behave like the bourgeoisie.

I can't tell you about other countries but in Romania it was the USSR who dictated policies in the first decades. We're talking about political imprisonment, torture, forced collectivization .Don't know what kind of socialism was that when the party takes everything from the peasants. In fact the peasants' party PNTCD was the most brutalized by the commies. In time it became some kind of patriotic, nationalistic cult of personality type of communism like in N Korea , that was even against USSR plans and policies . Kremlin didn't like Ceausescu one bit . The people that took down the dictator Ceausescu , were communists schooled in Moscow and aligned to USSR ambitions. You're right that these were underdeveloped agrarian countries that had to sacrifice a lot to go industrial and modernize , but nothing was ever free .Everything was achieved with great sacrifice , even when the countries became richer the people were still poor and very limited. School was pretty good I have to admit, excluding the propaganda of course. But the healthcare worked on bribes and still works like that today. Getting proper treatment without pushing envelopes was never a trend, at least not here.

@@somngreu4800 Local culture also shapes certain attitudes, such as bribery. For example, in Yugoslavia, bribery was common in the parts that were under the Turks, but in the parts that were under the Austrians, it was practically non-existent and everything worked. The communist countries had more different regimes between them than the countries in the EU have now, so the Soviets left a lot more to local politicians than Brussels. Although today's propaganda wants to cover it up.
