Hello you!
As you know, when we moved from London to Southampton in 2021 we planned on eventually getting a dog. It's the third instalment of our ongoing diary as new puppy owners. Marshall has had his second jab, but cannot go out for two more weeks. * sigh * However we do take Marshall on a coffee run and try and settle him upstairs in the living room.

Puppies are surely a full time job. It’s crazy! Our Bernese is 2 years old now and it was well worth it to go through the puppy and teenage phase but it sure came with lots of frustrations, crying and regrets at times. All normal feelings. He is such a cutie!

He’s so beautiful 🥰. I wish you had had Marshall before I had my George, I would have had a great idea of what to expect. Unlike all the liar liar pants on fire instagramers with their cutesy perfect butter wouldn’t melt puppy pics, with you it’s a honest and true experience of having a puppy. It’s hard, you cry, regret, and have many sleepless nights. Stick with it guys! You’re doing great and will be rewarded with the love of your lives, I promise! xx🐾

Ha! We know what you mean Sue - we feel a bit duped by the positive skewed things we saw beforehand- but having said, even if we had seen more of the stress and chaos, we question whether we would have let that influence us and stopped us from getting Marshall. It’s ‘lovely’ to hear that this is ‘normal’ and that so many others have gone through it and come out the other side. Thanks for the reassurance xx

Oh I still would have gotten George too but with the honesty your video shows I would have been prepared and braced myself. I genuinely thought I’d been given an unloving aggressive pup ( first time pup mum🙋🏻‍♀️) and he almost broke me 🤦🏻‍♀️I had no idea he was just being a puppy. Your honest experience would have helped me SO much. Keep doing what you do xx

You boys should be reassured that the occasional "regret" is totally understandable given your prior daily lifestyle and comfort. Lord knows I would have had my car warming up a few times if I hadn't had my pug (admittedly a different breed and size) arrive as a potty-trained and non-arm-consuming three-year-old. And I can already see Ian's eye-roll when I offer the obligatory "it gets better", however, it does get better. In fact, these challenging days will be no match to the daily kisses, hugs, laughter, and a potty-trained, non-skin abrasive Mr Marshall will contribute to this threesome for years to come. But remember he already looks good in a harness and even has a hairy, well, you know. lol So hang in there mates!
@MrDavidMrIan
@MrDavidMrIan 7 ай бұрын
Thank you for taking the time out to send us that considered message. It’s very much appreciated - and there was no eye roll reading it! Honest. It’s a mix of two steps forward, one back and one step forward, two back. He’s now ‘forgotten’ his name so his recall is shot to sh1t, so trying to work on that ahead of becoming a teenager and he ‘forgets’ again 🤦🏼‍♂️ Thanks again Chief x

I have a golden retriever she is now 3 yrs old. When she was a puppy up to the age of I would say up to around one and a half. She drove me crazy no matter how many times she went out the zoomies were exhausting! it was worse at about 6.30-7.00pm she slept in a very large extended pen which we made a front leading off it so the pen was left open into another enclosed area. We covered the pen at night over with a sheet so she felt safe and cosy inside. The front part we extended by a child’s play pen frame she had the wee pads on the floor and some water and toys. She loved being in there. We went up to bed at night turned off the light she didn’t murmur. When she barked we told her no bark and the same with biting. She only barks now very occasionally. Now she is very calm and I couldn’t live without her I am so glad to have persevered and be patient . It feels like forever for the calming down to happen 😂😂. But they are such intelligent dogs and very easy to train once you have that bond.

Although I am not a dog lover I appreciate the insight into taking a puppy. So as you are being honest about the experience if you could wind the clock to BM (Before Marshall) and change your mind about taking one would you? Or does that answer vary?!
@MrDavidMrIan
@MrDavidMrIan 7 ай бұрын
Oooooh Dave. That’s a tricky one. For me (I) taking out the emotional attachment I now have for Marshall it would be a non-brainer and I’d say no. At least no to a puppy. An older dog, maybe. Or I wish I’d seen vlogs and read accounts where the reality of having a puppy was more evident (or it could be that I had seen and read that but was seeing it through rose tinted glasses and my brain ignored it!) But from the moment we met him and his mum and siblings at the breeder’s home we adored him - and that makes it more tricky to be totally objective about it. His arrival coincided with some other life stuff that has probably made it more challenging- and certainly autumn/winter weather has added an element that we hadn’t considered. A spring /summer arrival of Marshall would have taken the pressure off! These past few weeks, aside from a couple of moments of craziness each day, have been totally different to how he was a month ago - but we know teenage time is coming, so it’s possibly the (relative) calm before the storm. Reading online, the 8 - 18 months time is when most dogs are handed over to rehoming services... so who knows what the next curve ball will be! 🤦🏼‍♂️

I’m really curious about the not being able to go for a walk with him. I wonder if it’s a UK rule in relation to their shots as I’ve never heard of that here in Canada. Usually we get puppies with their first shots already done at the breeder though and walk them as soon as we get them at 8-12 weeks.
@MrDavidMrIan
@MrDavidMrIan 7 ай бұрын
Hey Kristen - puppies get two rounds of shots. First from about 8 weeks and then the second 4 weeks later. They have to be from the same batch/make. Our breeder used to get the first one done but as the buyers don’t have the same vets there is less chance their vet will have the same batch/make, is the process invariably starts again. And we need to give it 2 weeks after the second shot for full immunity. So there is a risk that after the first jab they could still pick something up.

Sorry for not living up to your expectations and we’ll amend the wording on the channel (when time allows) to reflect what is achievable. We’d hoped it was evident from the Marshall diaries how busy and tough life had got these past few months - and then add in Christmas and all the busy-ness that brings - and that putting out content had to fall down our list of priorities for a while. It wasn’t ideal, but something had to give. Have a great 2024.
