Mr Marvels amusement park in Scarborough, North Yorkshire closed in 2002 and nothing has replaced it since. I took a walk round the old site on Scarborough’s North Bay to have a look at what remains, as well as the site below where the Atlantis Water Park used to be.
Starting close to Scarborough’s North Bay beach, my walk takes me past Peasholm Park, North Bay Railway and the Open Air Theatre in this gem of a location on the Yorkshire coast.

It's been left like that unused and derelict because for some reason Scarborough Borough Council seem bound and determined to turn Scarborough into some kind of ghost town. Which is why they demolished the futurist theatre, planned a multi plex cinema for the north bay, then decided to have it near the market and stopped renewing the shops leases. Then once they had more or less emptied the block changed their minds back to the north bay and are now talking about having it in the brunswick centre in the old Debnaham's unit. But we are all expecting that to fall through by next year and them to go back to north bay or somewhere else, all the time nothing is actually being built, just lots of money being spent on proposals, and meetings etc. Not to mentions the thousands being spent on the new cycle path along the A64 that very few people use, and the stealth speed restrictions being put in at the same time, making getting to Scarborough even more of a nightmare than it already is because all the speeding up and slowing down is just causing the traffic to become more congested. Scarborough has the potential to because the UK's best seaside attraction but it needs a good road to get here on, i.e a dual carriageway all the way from the York ring road, and for the Council to put in new attractions instead of closing down the old ones and talking about doing stuff.

I didnt know that...but im not suprised they make enough money to not bother with public opinion...I think we need public meetings with more public than councillors.. Dont forget that high % public opinion is more powerful than council or gov power,,but if you have no members your not effective... I would love to form a Public council for scarborough but im busy with Leeds.. Phil...Wishing you every luck as i believe in you..

I first went to Scarborough in 1970 with my parents when I was 10. I remember the open air pool at the North Bay. I also remember the North Bay Cafe on the corner which had a model railway in it. I went back to Scarborough about 15 years ago while on holiday in York and was very surprised at how much the area had changed. The highlight of that day was once again seeing the Naval battle at Peasholm Park and walking round the tree walk wonderland. Gordon Taylor, Scotland.

Went on my first ever holiday to Scarborough in 1986. To a young kid, this area of the town was a magical, endlessly interesting and entertaining place to be. Peasholm Park with the naval battles and the nighttime tree walk, mini golf, Kinderland, the water chute, the miniature railway, Marvels, the swimming pool and slides and obviously the beach. Amazing memories.

I moved with my family as a 10 year old in 1977 from the industrial Midlands Scarborough was so exciting to us and I remember this as Zoo and Marine land and remember swimming in the North Bay pool. I left in 1984 but still visit frequently and am saddened at what has been lost, mostly to neglect and lack of maintenance, to which the council usually uses as a excuse to get rid. They are definitely not interested in the residents of Scarborough. I loved that area and it was so lively and vibrant in the summer, especially Peasholme Park and the tree walk.

The drone footage gives us a greater idea of just how vast this area is and how so much could/should be done to rejuvenate the area. As a kid in the 60s/70s Scarborough, and Whitby, were the 'go to' seaside destinations, as far removed from Middlesbrough as you could get, not geographically of course, but just in terms of removing yourself from the humdrum existence of everyday life. A week was never enough. I remember after one particularly enjoyable holiday there when I was 14 I just got it into my head I was going to live there and get a job, lol. So on the Monday morning after we'd returned home and after Dad had left for work at 6 a.m. I took the suitcase I'd packed the night before, sneaked out of the house and got on the coach to Scarborough from M/Boro bus station. A sea-front ice-cream parlour had jobs going so I headed there once I arrived. You can tell I'd not thought this through, hahaha. I don't recall the owner's name but I vividly recall he was a huge bloke, of Italian heritage, if memory serves, and the business was very well known. Of course what I didn't factor in was A) My mother was at home, frantic with worry and B) I was only 14! I was back home before Dad got home from work at 6.30 p.m. Had a visit from a very stern police sargeant who gave me a right bollocking, lol. I got a leathering off my Dad too. Aye, the daft stunts we pull as kids when we think we know it all.

Another great video - and I remember going to the Marinepark and seeing the dolphins (in a very small pool) - and a walking bear on a lead. There used to be life size dinosaur sculptures and volcanoes. The waterpark was also amazing for its time and I recall other kids being really jealous when I told them about it when I got back to school. Kinderland was also pretty amazing and worth checking out and was located in the area beside waterflume. So sad to see it so neglected now when it has such potential.

I was in this area yesterday on a nostalgia trip with my Grandaughter. I'm filled with strong emotions as I recollect my long lost dim and distant child hood. I'm now 67, my Grandaughter 22 and my parents used to bring me every year for a holiday from the late 1950s until about 1967. We were looking for Northstead and the street where we used to stay. Peasholm Park is still beautiful. The area where the water park was and the corner cafe is a disgrace and a major disappointment.

Great memories of peasholme park walking round there with my grandparents, they lived just up the road from it, loved kinderland too that was great. Unfortunately for Scarborough the Zenith project as it was known by never really took off, the council need and should get there fingers out and use the sites to bring back some decent open space for the loacals and tourists Scarborough needs it desperately.

I’ve lived in Scarborough all my life 47 years. I remember going to zoo and marine land to see the dolphins, the old open air theatre just before it closed, it’s now wonderful , I remember finishing school in the summer term and all piling down to water scene as we got a season pass after 4pm for £5 . Yes a fiver. Kinder land was Awsome . The ball pool and those bikes were Awsome. Sadly the boro council are clueless with no vision for the town. Leisure has changed but the council are stuck in the 80’s still and fearful of what to do with these great sites.

I remember when mr marvels open in 1984 ,i was in my late teens back then .the park was great and had a huge buzz back in the day . The chairlifts were great fun but the queues were huge when it first opened. My favourite ride at the time was the paratrooper which at one time was in the at the southbay funfair and it was transferred and installed at mr Marvels at north bay . Its a shame it closed down cause it was a great attraction in its day ,i even took my own family their a few times till it sadly closed in 2002 😢

I had many happy family holidays in Scarborough in the 70s. I came here because I lost my Dad this year. Mum died five years ago. There have been many memories stirred as we sort out the house. Scarborough will always have place in my heart and memory. It pains me to see how the town has suffered. Having moved south I have not been back since the late 90s. So many of the places I remember have been closed and/or demolished. The Cafe at North Bay Sands was the place for Knickerbocker Glories and Ice Cream Floats. Marineland was always a treat as was the Railway to Scalby Mills. Peasholm Park and the Naval Battle was always on the list. I really hope that the town starts to get the investment that appears to have been so sadly lacking. Perhaps one of the long term effects of COVID will be a revival for our seaside towns. I wish Scarborough well. The town deserves better.

Great video. I was born in Scarborough but left aged 10 in 1979. I used to swim in the North and South Bay swimming pools which were brilliant for the local kids and holiday makers alike. I never saw the later changes to the amusement park but I loved the pools as they were in the 70s. Peasholm Park, seafront amusements and the cinema were all go-to places as I grew up. I missed all of that terribly when I moved away. Great memories so thanks for making this.

Interesting piece. Came across this purely by accident. I know a customer of mine who lives in that new block by the sea, so glad to find out the history of the place. Also, if anyone's interested, have a look on Google Maps street view and move the little yellow man, and you can go slide back in time to 2008, and still see the water park slides, and then you can move forward in time, and see who the whole site degrades to what it is today.

Brilliantly revealing video, with drones it's no longer possible to hide dreadful sites like these behind high fences, as a North Yorkshire resident I am ashamed at the poor management by Scarborough Council. This starting the closure of the theme park. The open air theatre in the sixties was the best with proper shows musicals on regularly and fireworks on a weekend. The queues were 6 deep and went from the entrance, past the Corner Cafe and found the Corner past the Waffle shop and toilets. Great days

My strongest childhood memories of Scarborough are of the dolphins and fibreglass volcano/dinosaurs in Marineland; the naval battles in Peaseholm Park; It’s a Knockout at the open air theatre; a joke shop in the town centre; and seeing summer shows like The Krankies at the Floral Hall. And, that film clip of Water Scene unearthed a forgotten memory of nearly drowning there! Must have been 1984. Scarborough had it all. Sad to see the council failed to invest and keep it the best holiday venue in the UK. Still, your video has inspired a trip, we’ll definitely come visit next summer.

Although I am not Scarborough born, it is my chosen home. Locals have said that the council wouldn’t renew the license for kinder land, so it had to close. The cinema due on the old outside pool has been promised, for several years, but recently they have removed the boards advertising this info from the site. Personally I enjoy the old fashioned Hollywood plaza and think the new cinema would make the family run business struggle. Scarborough lacks in door, bad weather facilities. So it would make sense to offer some in door facilities. Enjoying your videos, please keep them coming.

I knew the water park as splash that was in 1986 when I went but had no idea about Mr marvels and have never stepped foot on North Bay. I need to have a look. Thanks for sharing.

Informative and really well presented. As someone who visited Scarborough every year as a child I remember how wonderful these places were. I’m now fortunate enough to be living here and would love to see the North Bay given some love. Wonderful memories. Thank you.

I'm from Teesside and spent lots of time in Scarborough with my parents in the 70's, Remember it's a knockout where the open air theatre is now, there was a Dinosaur Park before Mr Marvels was built & a Waffle shop on the front near the beach, brilliant memories, you could spend all day at the North end of the town without ever needing to go to the Castle side. Love your video's, keep up the good work.

You must continue making these types of videos, fascinating to watch, some of the old abandoned rail way tracks around Yorkshire would be great, so much history and an argument to bring them back in some form

Hi Andrew. Loving your videos, thanks for making them. People underestimate how hard it is to talk to camera and make it sound and look natural. You do that so well. Just like you are talking to a friend. Looking forward to seeing your channel grow, and I can be one of those annoying people who can say they were here for ages when you get your 100,000 sub award :)

Another super video. God bless Don Robinson, his ideas were way ahead of time and he brought some of the to Hull City as chairman. I went to Atlantis a few times. The rapids with their blue tubed rings and 70 degree drops used to shred the skin off your legs. The water was blooming cold too. Happy days.

Great video. It’s always sad to see a “then and now” with the happy faces enjoying themselves. It’s like an entertainment graveyard. I’m from Leeds and remember a lot of how it was from visits in the 70’s. You do have to question the viability of the outdoor water park though, given the weather in the UK. I do agree with you that I’m surprised it has been left like this for so long.

Interesting video, people want to swim; the demand is there - councils can't run a decent pool, tend to get carried away with vanity projects that cost £Ms

Excellent videos. While a student we used torun Kids Camps staying in Hinderwell and having days out to Scarborough, where we'd visit Waterscene and Kinderland, they loved it. Also we'd spend days at Lightwater Valley, Flamingo Land, N York Moors railway, Middlesboro ice skating, swimming, North Bay, Robin Hood's Bay, etc etc. Fun times for the students, and hopefully the kids too. Helped inspire me to become a teacher anyway.

Remember both the marine park and Mr Marvels. Many a weeks holiday with the parents as a kid in Scarbados. Still love coming over from Leeds on a day out. It's by time they developed the old sites. Pretty sure they could do something to bring in more folk.

@@NorthYorkshireWanderer Now then Andrew, I bumped into your channel when the algorithm recommended your video about Butlins at Filey. I ended up subbing after five minutes in! Really enjoy the content, especially as I'm local to North Yorkshire and have travelled/holidayed all over the wider county. Did/do you ever spend any time a little further south, specifically the East Yorkshire and Holderness coastline? I have some great childhood memories of static and touring caravan holidays in Bridlington, (lol must admit "Brid" is a little rough these days) Skipsea, Withernsea and Hornsea, and days out to really interesting places such as Eden Camp, Flamborough Head, Burton Agnes Hall, Beverley Minster, Skipsea Castle and Spurn Point. I believe that particular stretch of the UK coastline is the most at risk from tidal erosion in the whole of Europe?? The landscape has certainly changed a lot since I was a regular visitor in the late 80s to late 90s... Quality content is rare on KZfaq these days, so thank you for your efforts! Keep up the great work pal! 👍
