Did an extension roof almost identical to this at the end of last summer, working for a mate who is a 35 year seasoned chippy (I'm a 15 year skilled labourer/handyman), and I wish I had seen this video beforehand! Your attention to detail and care over the design/layout elements is phenomenal, really impressive, and a level of experience & knowledge "input" (and clear years of loving your craft) that I wish my mate still had! Great video...I'm now "Subscribed"!!! 👍🏼💪🏼👊🏼😁

I think these builders who make vids of their work put the others to shame. Your skill, technique, quality control, site safety and cleanliness is there for all to see. Not just the end result but the hidden stuff that is so hard to see unless you are on top of every stage. One single mistake and all those that don't have the confidence to broadcast will pile in! The fact that you do this means you'll always be up at the top of the trade and customers can engage you with confidence. Thank God for KZfaq!

Lean to, roof Mr A ! it’s leaning towards not leaning as well ! That’s enough of that. I am pleased to see that there is enough space beneath the sills to install your top flashing, I’ve come across several sets of drawings which ignore this, I think with the intention of getting a specific head height and tiling fall.

@mrabuilders6723
@mrabuilders6723 Жыл бұрын
Hi Dan. We do add the wall plate straps as well as required by building regs but the bedding on is mainly to get it bang on level and flat. If we bolted down into those light weight thermolite blocks they’d shatter. Thanks for the comment. 👍🏻
@user-fq4qk9wz5k
@user-fq4qk9wz5k 9 ай бұрын
Trying to get all the joints bang on is so dependent on so many variables ie the sole plate being dead level the outside wall being real parallel with the existing wall the nominal timber sizes being all the same size and square generally nowadays from my experience u can’t have all of them things falling in to place ( especially the timber sizes) so it’s always a compromise on a drawing it works perfectly but in reality it rarely does so u compensate as all chippies do on site and make it work but for me u still can’t beat traditional roof construction so great tutorial

Where the rafter bevel rests on the ledger board/bolted wall plate, in what instance would this become another birds mouth cut resting on top of the bolted plate?

Great vids. Thanks for posting. I have a lean to on my old 1840's stone garage. The roof is slate tile and is laid directly on the stone. The lathes are rotten and it needs replacing So I want to add a bolted wall plate and rebuild using the process you outlined in this video. The stone where the bolted wall plate will be fixed is pretty wavy. I was thinking I could use packers where needed when bolting it to the stone would that work or would you advise something different?
@mrabuilders6723
@mrabuilders6723 Жыл бұрын
Hi Steve my first thought about the bolted wall plate would be to bolt on temporary in place and cut above and below with a grinder. Remove the plate and remove the face of the stone between these cuts with a breaker to form a flatter surface rather than packers and then fix using a two part resin you can push all thread into which you can buy from Screwfix. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 👍🏻

hi, so where we are you have to bolt and dog washer your doubles/triples around roof lights plus joist hanger all openings, rafter clip the bottoms and truss clip the tops or are you doing that in the next part? great episode

Hi Chris and thanks for watching. I will be coach bolting the doubles but I won’t be using joist hangers on the top and bottom timbers. What I do is use a large bracket at the top of each double and bolt this into the bolted wall plate and into the top of the double. I can see where the joist hangers would come into play if the rafter top and bottom were longer therefore more weight. However I’ve done 400mm centres and used 8”x2” C24 timbers so I’m more than confident that it is structurally sound. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻

@@mrabuilders6723 its what our building control specify we are not allowed to use coach bolts now it has to be a hi-tensile steel hex head on a square plate with dog washers rafter clips at the bottom and truss clips as they will not allow just nailing anymore as we are mostly on clay and have had a lot of movement over the years

This method of setting out was used by an old carpenter who done nothing but 1st fix roofing kind of fool proof. He used to do a similar way for the hips but he nailed a scrap piece to wall plate be interesting to see how you set out hips.
