Right at the end. As the last boss stops emitting energy waves and the scene starts and the ship positions itself for the final barrage. According to what I found the ship says "Release the restraining device. Using the released power may result in the possibility of destruction of the ship. Was I helpful for you? I am deeply grateful to you." Basically, there must've been some kind of limiter on the ship to restrain its power output. But he realized at the end that they weren't going to normally have enough power to destroy the core. If they let the core escape now it might just return and what would they do then? I also don't recall if it was the ship that was talking to him or the engineer who helped design and build the ship. Maybe he was communicating with that person instead. The pilot then disengages the limiter on the ship and unleashes the final barrage. He dies without ever knowing if he really accomplished his mission. Truly a heroic end. T__T

Your ship going down before Stone Like is such an important aspect of this game's storytelling. Not at the same time, not just after, but well before the last shot is fired and the outcome is unclear. It aligns with all of the establishments the game's text makes since the first 3 lines of text, and holistically it speaks to the nature of risk and aligning yourself to ideals that are never certain to come true, yet being content in not the result but the attempt that was made. Ikaruga is the most beautiful shmup ever created, combining bullet hell with puzzle solving and poetry to deliver a message that resonates deeper as an individual progresses deeper into their own lives and experiences the stages first hand. It is all parts intellectual, emotional, reactionary and reflective achieved in under 30 minutes of presentation. To this day the fact that Ikaruga exists by human creation blows my mind.

i have a theory, many say this game is a spiritual sequel to radiant silvergun, but i think it's a direct sequel spoilers: after defeating the stone-like (the golden tetrahedron), it's revealed that it's an atemporal being who seeks to stop humanity from destroying itself, by resetting time until they realize the error of their warmongering nature, creator, the robot, is the only link between timelines, as he's always found alongside the stone-like, this version was sent back to the past, carrying the dna of the protagonists, buster and reana, which he used to clone then in the new timeline, thus restarting the time loop. here's where ikarouga fits, after contless timeloops, creator takes matters into it's own hands and upgrades himself into a modified silvergun, and faces the stone-like, however, he had a power limiter holding him back, as to not stress his body, and in his final moments, he deactivates the limiter, unleashing all his power and destroying itself, his true nature would never be truly understood, but in that timeline, creator would be remembered a hero and humanity's saviour. thus manking can now move on to a brighter future.
Interesante ese dato, ojala hubiera una trilogía de Ikaruga 😞

This is one of those games that looks so good the backgrounds get you killed. You want to look at the details of the beautiful backdrops and forget that you have a hell storm of bullets coming at you.
