Going deeper, here's more about the lyricist(s)...as reported by: Ms. Lexy Raybon "The Dream of Martin Luther King" Song "The Dream of Martin Luther King" After the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Merle Gartrell, a teacher in an inner-city elementary school in Memphis, encouraged his students to write a song to express their grief. Students from his K-6 classes contributed ideas and phrases for the song. These ideas were refined over a period of weeks. Mr. Gartrell played melodic phrases and harmonies for the students to evaluate. These were added to the lyrics. The song was shared with other schools and spread immediately all over the city.
