NOTE: There is a more up to date video at • Ultimate VTx smart pow... which covers iNav 2.6 onwards.
There have been a few videos and tutorials showing how to automatically raise and lower the power level of your VTx; using iNav Logic Conditions and Global Functions. The problem with them is that they are always based on your distance from home. But, an RC plane doesn't just fly along the ground. It has the 3D expanse of the sky to cover distance in. This auto power adjustment program takes that into consideration. It will base the distance on an imaginary line between the home point and the model, both vertically and horizontally. Therefore, you can fly away from you in any direction, and the VTx power will increase or decrease based on the ranges you set.
I call the is the ultimate auto VTx power adjustment with iNav Logic Conditions. However, the real ultimate would be using the RSSI of the VRx. But this is not available at this time. So this is really the ultimate based on distance.

@@MrD Thanks! I'm currently setting up my Rekon5 (first rtf quad) but I have some problems setting up manual vtx control. I have used it recently in BF and manual vtx control worked just flawless! In inav now: I have an additional function determining if my 6pos switch is on position 6 and if so activates dynamic vtx power. But if it's in Range 1-5 manual vtx power is active which will use the position of the switch (SUB 500 and DIV 250) and send it to the vtx. Testing it in the Programming tab in inav the LV changes from 1-5 and the dot of the "VTX Power Set" line shortly blinks after each input. But after powering the quad the vtx just always stays in pit mode. Maybe you have an idea? 😅

Genuine question. What do you think would happen with GPS fail while far from home? Would it trigger vtx power 1? Because its a critical point to lose both gps and video.
@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
If the GPS fails, as far as the VTx switching goes, it will not just jump to power level 1. The home distance freezes, so only the altitude from the baro will be active. Most likely, it will stay on the current power level. But there is potential for the power to change based on altitude. This is or course all relative to the distances you have set. This is the same for the improved 3D Distance from Home method on the other video. This was tested by getting a home position, moving away, and cutting power to the GPS.

Absolutely brilliant Darren, thankyou so much for putting this together, going to set it up on all my planes. Will the absolute 3D distance variable be incorporated into iNav 2.7 do you know, as I often fly from hills below myself to the coast?
@MrD
@MrD 3 жыл бұрын
No problem Glenn. The 3D distance from home is in 2.6. I’m going to code something, possibly tonight, for 2.7 to allow the sat count to be used as an error check too. At the moment, if the GPS is lost, the sat count stays on it’s current level; which is not only wrong, but it stops being able to use it as a safety check in programming. When the feature gets added, if GPS is lost, the sat count will go to 0. Meaning in the next version of this, we can add a safety check so that if the sats go below 6 (below 5 the GPS data gets inaccurate) we can go to full power on the VTx to make sure we can see. Plus I’ll be adding manual power options too.

Hey Darren I hope your well, I've been using this setup for almost a year now and have a couple of questions please, in the osd its showing vtx power levels changing 1 through 4 but i have doubts that vtx is actually going up to 800mw due to my lack of range, is there anyway to verify power level? I've also noticed in the configuration page there's settings for looks like band and channel there's options like fatshark and boscam my vtx is crossfire so i don't really know what to do there. Also i have low vtx power on disarm enabled in the cli but should I set vtx power level to 4 in cli? Thanks for all your videos
@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ernest, I'm doing ok thanks. Hope you're well too. The only real way to know if the power is being updated is with a power meter to test the output. The LEDs or displays on the VTx should show the correct level. What sort of range are you getting? Ok, first up the bands and channel options. The bands are the names of the frequency bands available. The have no relation to the manufacturer of the VTx. TBS VTx, will still use BAND A (BOSCAM A), BAND B (BOSCAM B), BAND E (FOXTECH), BAND F (FATSHARK/IMMERSION), BAND R (RACEBAND). The bands are just frequency ranges that have been specified, with the channels taking up a specific frequency within that range. Whatever you set with the band and channel in configurator, for example Band F, Channel 4. That should be the channel that is output by the VTx, in this example F4 is 5800MHz. But, I would turn off low power before arm. You can do that on the Configuration page, no need to use CLI. That could be interfering with the programming. Also, with low range, you should be on 25mW already.

how much CPU resources is using 8 logic parameters continuously versus a LUA script running in loop to adjust the VTX power directly?

Nowhere near enough to worry about. I have around 20-25 programming lines and it’s un-noticeable, even on an F411. Marc Hoffman has used all 32, again, no impact at all. Just using loiter will have more processing than this code.

Hello mate, i have a question. What if i need to convert speed( cm/s into km/h) DIV for 27,77777 but i cannot use decimal . Any help?
@MrD
@MrD 3 жыл бұрын
I've just checked this and at the moment, you can't have decimal places in the operands. There are a few options, all would need changes in iNav. The first would be to allow decimal places in the operands. The second would be to do the conversions in iNav, and have extra variables in the Flight list. For example Ground speed [Km/h], Air speed [mph], Altitude [m]. This could add quite a few more options though, but may be simpler for people and require less programming steps. The best thing to do, would be to go to github.com/iNavFlight/inav-configurator/issues and raise an issue, maybe suggest your preferred solution. It may also be worth tagging @DzikuVx in the issue as Pawel wrote the programming framework in the first place.

I'm doing good also Darren thanks, I will disable low power on disarm and hopefully that's the problem. This thing has me really scratching my head, according to my research I have some of the best 5.8ghz gear. On the ar wing pro I'm using the crossfire unify pro with the vas mad mushroom antenna,on the diversity receiver I'm using a ib crazy 5 and a 7 turn helical, I have been in touch with this antenna company and they say with this setup and my flying environment range should be much better which on good day I might get .6mile never a full mile. I think I have something wrong in inav, if I try changing power level on vtx using button and counting flashing light and then go into cli get vtx power level is always 1 basically I'm thinking vtx is always outputting 25mw. So in configuration page I understand now and the antenna company also recommends using fatshark f1 which I will set vtx to using inav I don't think vtx itself will save changes unless I do it in cli. Sorry for long post and I hope this makes sense. Thanks for all your help over the years

No need to do it in CLI. The band and channel on the configuration page work fine. I think to get 0.6 miles on 25mW, you’d need a pretty good, low noise environment with that setup. But I guess it’s possible.

To be honest, this really must be a setup issue. You should easily get 3-4 miles out of that setup. The other consideration to make is where is your head pointing. You have 2 directional antennae on your goggles. If they are not pointed at the model, you will have much worse reception. In fact, I’d recommend and omni and the 7 coil helical, rather than 2 helicals. Also, is the circular polarisation of all 3 antennae the same?
@egtreadway4232
@egtreadway4232 2 жыл бұрын

I wish I could verify vtx output during flight but osd shows it switching from 1 to 4 I'm just not sure what's going on but been my first fpv setup I'm sure problem is on my end. Thanks
@MrD
@MrD 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ernest. First, I've just done a test, and you can use low power until first arm. That works fine with the programming. Nothing will change until after you have armed. The 2 directional antennae aren't really doing you any favours. The directional is good for the range, but you need to keep it pointed towards the plane. The omni is good for when you are closer, as it will cover a much greater area around you. With that AXII 2, that will be fine, so long as it is the type with the feed wire and not the stubby. Ideally you want the antenna vertical and above the helical. The helical will of course be aimed straight out in front of you. Having 2 helicals won't increase your range. At best it would widen the beam where the best signal is found. But with 2 different sized helicals, I'd bet the 7 turn is the one that's always used anyway. Do you fly with other people? If so, ask them to let you know what your head is doing. Some people have a tendency to look up or down. The will of course reduce the effectiveness of the antenna. If the picture starts degrading. Slowly move your head and keep moving in the direction the image gets better. The only other thing I can suggest at the moment is to look up your VTx and see if anything needs to be enabled for SmartAudio to work. With TBS, I'd imagine it's working out of the box. But it's worth a try. If you're on Facebook or Discord, maybe post some photos of your FPV setup. Maybe there's something that is causing problems with orientation?

Hey man, great video and the variables works very well! However i have had something strange that makes no sence. Distance of 1.65Km and Alt of 2.1km the logic changes back down to level 3 on the vtx. Further than 1.65 the vtx was pushing level 4 as expected. My distance value for level 4 is set to 2000. I checked the whole dvr footage and the power levels changed exaclty as expected up to that point. Would you have any pointers to check? Thanks
@MrD
@MrD 3 жыл бұрын
That sounds really strange. There’s no reason why it should work most of the time. I agree that at 3750m (what the global variable should have been), that it should switch down to level 3. It should still be on level 4. Perhaps there is something strange happening gun with the global variable. Unfortunately there is no way to check this while flying at the moment. In 2.6 GVars will be viewable on screen, which would help with diagnosis. Also, there may be a 3D home position, that is using proper trigonometry to get the correct distance from the home point to the model. So without the diagnostic ability, I can’t really say what is happening. It will be there in 2.6, but so might a much better and simpler way of doing this.
@MrD
@MrD 3 жыл бұрын
To follow up, I could not find the range allowed in the GVARs, so I asked Paweł. They can store from -32768 to 32767. So there should be no reason why there would be a problem storing 3750. It should have 10 times that available.

as for the delay yea ... but it would be nice so that it's not an "absolute" thing

Yeah, it is a bit crap that some is in cm and other stuff is in metres. There is no real reason to use cm, especially for things like altitude and loiter radius. Metres are fine. The configurator can convert it to whatever units the firmware is expecting. The inconsistency is crap. Its why I converted the altitude to metres. Who want to set stuff like this in cm at all.

Is this just for analog or would it work for Walksnail Avatar as well?

This is for any system where INAV can set the transmit power. It wouldn’t work with Walksnail. The power is controlled by the goggles.

Hey Darren,I know this is old video looks like inav 2.5 but I'm trying to get this working, in inav 3.0.1 in programming tab there's no global fuction opitions only logic conditions and pid controllers. I've already setup as far as the logic conditions page but not sure what to do about the global function? If possible please advise Thanks

Check out the video for auto VTX power for iNav 2.6. That has a better setup and shows where the coding goes. It was all merged in to programming in 2.6. It’s the same in 4.1.

Thanks I'll give it a try, also in the ports tab in inav does it matter were tbs smart audio is enabled?

Well, it needs to be the port it’s connected to. But it doesn’t matter which port in most cases. The only exception is on F4 flight controllers that have a dedicated UART for SBUS. It’s better to keep that one for the receiver.

Thanks again, I've got it setup like yours, and enabled TVs smart audio on uart 3 this is were vtx is connected, only difference there's no 3D home choice in programming I used home distance meters but hopefully I can try it out tomorrow. Thanks again
