On Nov. 18th, 1990, I flew from Kansas City to Charlotte, NC, on Eastern Airlines. The red line on this first Google Earth screenshot includes the first leg of the trip, which can be seen on my KZfaq channel AT THIS LINK: • AVIATION - EASTERN AIR...
This video you are watching is the second leg of the trip, marked in blue, from Atlanta, Georgia, to Charlotte, North Carolina.
At that time, I was unaware that a labor dispute would close down Eastern Airlines on January 18th, 1991, exactly two months later.
This video shows a somewhat historic flight.
(1) Due to FAA flight restrictions of two-engine commercial aircraft, requiring they be within 60 minutes of a diversion airport, the “Trijet” configuration of airliners was conceived to get around that restriction. As technology advanced - more powerful, better fuel economy reliable engines - the Trijet configuration like this Boeing 727-200 became obsolete.
(2) Commercial jets today are pushed back from the gate by a tow vehicle. This is due to underwing engine damage and safety issues that could result if reverse thrusters were deployed to back the plane. In this video, the high location of the Trijet’s rear engines allowed it to back away from the gate using reverse thrusters.
(3) This flight was two months to the day before Eastern Airlines went out of business.
(4) The baggage handlers don’t scan a tag on each suitcase as they put it on the conveyor since baggage scanners didn’t exist at the time.
(5) Notice the wide, cloth-covered seats in the cabin.
