On Nov. 18th, 1990, I flew from Kansas City to Charlotte, NC, on Eastern Airlines. The red line on this first Google Earth screenshot includes the first leg of the trip, which can be seen on my KZfaq channel AT THIS LINK: • AVIATION - EASTERN AIR...
This video you are watching is the second leg of the trip, marked in blue, from Atlanta, Georgia, to Charlotte, North Carolina.
At that time, I was unaware that a labor dispute would close down Eastern Airlines on January 18th, 1991, exactly two months later.
This video shows a somewhat historic flight.
(1) Due to FAA flight restrictions of two-engine commercial aircraft, requiring they be within 60 minutes of a diversion airport, the “Trijet” configuration of airliners was conceived to get around that restriction. As technology advanced - more powerful, better fuel economy reliable engines - the Trijet configuration like this Boeing 727-200 became obsolete.
(2) Commercial jets today are pushed back from the gate by a tow vehicle. This is due to underwing engine damage and safety issues that could result if reverse thrusters were deployed to back the plane. In this video, the high location of the Trijet’s rear engines allowed it to back away from the gate using reverse thrusters.
(3) This flight was two months to the day before Eastern Airlines went out of business.
(4) The baggage handlers don’t scan a tag on each suitcase as they put it on the conveyor since baggage scanners didn’t exist at the time.
(5) Notice the wide, cloth-covered seats in the cabin.

What I’m fascinated by as a flight attendant is that there was a full beverage service on that 38 minute flight.

@travelmaneskridge8545 I agree 👍👍 I was a Flight Attendant for a few years and did service on flights 30 minutes and greater now-it seems a lot of airlines Flight has to be over certain mileage also love how clear the flight attendant on the PA is giving the safety demo can actually understand her

I flew Eastern many times on this route and there was always a full beverage service. Nowadays a flight has to be 50+ minutes, sometimes an hour or more and zero turbulence to even get bottled water and stale pretzels.

The service used to amaze me too. The cabin space and seat spacing were also nice. Even the DC9 cabin and seating were better than the A320 which serves many of these trips today.

Thank you for posting this as well as the MCI-ATL flight. My Dad was a 20+ year employee with Eastern at ATL. Every time I see a video of an Eastern bird I think of him. In 1964 I got to ride a 727 ATL-EWR (as a paying passenger). The new 727 had a quieter cabin than the earlier jets. About 20 years later I flew on an inaugural trip for the 757 so I got a "free hat" from Eastern. Today you have to fly business class on a wide body to have similar comfort.

Great flight review on Eastern Airlines 727-200 ATL-CLT. A better experience on your prior flight MCI-ATL in the rear of the 727-200 so you can hear the engines. Much quieter up front on this ATL-CLT leg of your trip.

Thanks for the lookback. A Brasilia, a Jetstream and a Dash 8. Uptown the way it looked in '90. The old Coliseum on approach to 36L (now 36C, primarily a departure runway). At the time you videoed this flight, I was tearing up the skies in SD 330s and 360s. Probably the only things uglier in the air was the Casa 212s. Haha. Ah...the good old days! Thanks again.👍

I'm glad to read you enjoyed the video. At the time, I had no idea what I would ever do with it other than watch it myself to remember to trip. There was no KZfaq back then. Once I had this YT channel, I almost didn't post it because I had no idea if anyone would watch it. Man, was I wrong! Many people have said they appreciated watching it. That makes me happy and makes it worth it.

My family and I always flew Eastern. From as long as I can remember (early 70's) to my last Eastern flight on a L1011 from JFk to MIA in 1990. To this day the smell of lemons reminds me of Eastern because they would serve lemon with their water.

This flight is about the same duration as DFW to TUL on AA 727's which I've probably been on hundreds of times. I heard the flight attendant mention that this was the termination of flight 272? I was actually on an American flight 272 727-223 from TUL to DFW in October 1983. You can read about my horrendous experience on that flight if you search for "frontier airlines insane turbulence" and read my comment. Sorry I don't have a link to that video. I watched this again and heard her say flight 372, sorry.

Flying was definitely different then. I remember flying from Chicago to Mexico in the mid 80s, whatever airplane/airline we were on had a smoking section in the last few rows of tail seats and full dinner service included in the ticket price.

Ah, the days when flight attendants had to play the “who has change for a twenty” on nearly every flight. I knew an attendant who flew for USAir who told me the main reason cashless cabins were incorporated was because of employee theft, not the change game. Hard to believe only two months after this flight Eastern shut down for good.

@Captain Bunwarmer Wow. That reminds me of Arthur Hailey’s original Airport novel. He wrote freely of the tactics flight attendants used to relieve the cost of living at home. I’d imagine there was a lot in that novel the airline industry wished Mr. Hailey had kept to himself.

At the time of this recording, some of Eastern’s striking flight attendants were recalled to work while the flight attendant scabs who crossed the picket line during the strike also continued working. I wonder if the FA in this video was a striker or a scab.
