The light idea could be improved if you attach another set of wires to a switch so you can leave the light on if you have to.

I like the flashlight idea but I find is that those 12 volt batteries never last long. They are just 8 1.5 volt button cells. I have a toy megaphone that I modified into a simple amp for an iPod and I ran that battery out in maybe 2 minutes.
