In this video, we take a look back at all the work we have done on this MK10 ex Berlin brigade Chieftain Tank.
Watch as we start to finish paint the vehicle and overhaul the engine and gearbox.
We managed to use 3 km of masking tape during this video.
This vehicle is one of the 14 Berlin brigade chieftains that was used in Germany.
There's still quite a lot more to do on this vehicle, so stay tuned for the next video update.

Nice ...seen pics of these in urban Berlin ... You wouldn't think so but its very effective. I read that all you need to do is create a couple of seconds of doubt with the enemy tank commander wondering what he is looking at . Then that could be just enough time to allow you to get the first shot off and the kill. Sheer brilliance .

Just leave the turret. The more things break down and don't work, the more realistic the restoration job will be. Let's face it. British or not, Chieftain was a dog. By the second day of an exercise (or war) it was best used duggin, hull-down as a pillbox. Maybe the later Mks were a little better but still a three legged woof woof. A quote by a former 4th RTR commander always stuck in my memory. "We used to say that Chieftain was the best tank in the world as long as it broke down in a good fire position. There was a strong element of truth in that statement. Its armour protection was good, its 120mm rifled gun powerful and accurate, but its automotive systems let it down." I think he was being kind, because the crew and REME, who had to work with and then fix the bloody things. Were far less nostalgic. They didn't even take the piss and trust me, that is a bad sign.

She looks fantastic and sounds even better. As a woman now in her fifties, people are often surprised that I love this tank, but my father was in the Tank regiment based in BAOR in the late 70s and early 80s, so I grew up around this roaring monster. To this day that engine scream is a sound I love. Thank you for sharing the video and for reminding me of happier times.

@@mikewinston8709 I grew up for a time in Paderborn, a place that I have very fond memories of. I went to school there too, so spent a lot of time seeing the sights when I could escape from my parents clutches. As such I explored as much of the Sennelager ranges as I could as a ten year old! On one occasion (in around 1984) I went into work with my Father and he took me for a short ride in an Alvis Stalwart, which was a magnificent machine. When my Father left the army and we returned to civilian life in the UK, it felt odd that kids stayed in the same place and had barely left the county, when I had seen so much of Europe and attended schools in different countries. 😁

My Grandfather was part of the Royal Lancers, he has been in germany alot in Paderborn, Detmold etc. but he was also in Iran when they was going to buy Cheiftain off of us and we was going to update them to their needs just prior to the iranian crisis. He was also there when Cheiftain was starting to phase out his troops were amoung the chaps he first got the challenger 1 that they were the guys doing the test driving as she came into surface, luckily he retired just before the first gulfwar, but seeing how relaible challenger was i dont think i would have cared if he was there haha, some of the stories of how well protected those tanks were is crazy.

There’s nothing like the sound of a Chieftain 😊 I think you’ll get the turret to power up, getting it under control with unknown electronics 😮 Just make sure you have clearance all the way round. We had a few that took off on their own on the first power on - luckily those turrets were on the test stands before mating back onto the hull. As you’re doing the testing on the hull, make sure the micro switches that detect the turret position in relation to the hull are working - I’m sure you know - but they force the gun up and across the rear deck. Good luck, exciting time ahead me thinks 😉

An excellent job there guys, all of your efforts have paid off handsomely. Just the sound of that engine made the hairs on the back of neck stand tall. It took me back to the autumn exercises whilst I was serving in BAOR. As a sapper we would often be tasked to throw a bridge across a gap at night, the soundtrack would often be the throaty roar of the Chieftans as they manoeuvred in the distance. With the bridge open, one by one these monsters would emerge from the darkness, cross the bridge and disappear once again into the night, the roar of the engine becoming fainter as they tracked further away. Oooooooooh matron.

Can't wait for the thermal sleeves to arrive for the gun to complete the look once they have been painted the right colours. I seem to remember when I did a little work for Nick Mead he had a Berlin chieftain which no doubt he's either wrecked or sold on, it used to make me angry seeing all that armour out to pasture to rust and gather mould in his fields not a single tank sheet in sight, not even a basic one over the engine deck's to stop the water getting in. Looking forward to seeing what's gonna happen with the warrior 😉.

You should have just stated that it served in Berlin in 77/78 cos then the camo was just basic black and green. I was 2 Para serving in Brooke Barracks just across the road from Smuts Barracks where the Chieftains were based. ;) I loved the Chieftains, when it was the Queens Birthday Parade, all Berlin armour used to take part. The American M60A1`s were just a fkng BARN next to the Chiftain and the French AMX 13`s were dinky toys. Chieftains ruled.

Brought back memories when I say sockets being found once gear box was out. When I was in the Army in a transport regiment as a punishment you had to steam clean the engine bay once engine taken out of the six wheeled stolly I absolutely loved it. engine bay as it was a amphibious vehicle it was watertight and alway ankle deep in oil and water. Anyone who got the job they would come to me they would pay me to do it as they knew I loved it. You see when REME would service the vehicle any spanner sockets and tools they dropped in the gunk stayed there. I made a fortune selling all the stuff i found. My dad was a owner driver and had a lorry and always had a buyer for the tools normally dads mates who had lorries and his fitter. 😂😂
