I was lucky enough to meet this man last weekend. He invited my coworker and I to see his basement. We had no idea what he had down there, but I could have stayed there for days!!! It is so amazing! He's such a nice man. Very inspirational to see someone take their passion so far. I feel very lucky to have had that opportunity. He is still working on his models and having a great time!

I am absolutely amazed at the level of sophistication in this layout, but what really gets me is the F7 cab. Truly unique model room. Well done!

Close-ups of the station and surrounding area would have been great. I also would like to have seen inside the engine cab.

Damn impressive layout and 1:1 train modelling as well. Dr. Muff is crazy ,but crazy like a fox. I once bought a bunch of slides on Ebay from him so I guess in a way I helped him to build this tremendous miniature world he created. Way to go Dr. Muff!

I was raised just east of KC in the 50s and 60s and I was in love with trains. The fidelity is amazing and the animated Western Auto sign plus the P&L building with the changing colors really brings back fond memories. Frisco and MoPac were my favorite lines but KCS will now earn a place in my memory book.

He had the F7 lowered into a "new" basement, then built that part of the house over it. Good luck if it ever needs to come out from there!

I happened to select Kansas City Confidential on amazon prime as the night's video pick and at the beginning of the movie I took one look and said "that's the Kansas City Union station that Nick Muff modeled" His mode of the station was so good the real was instantly recognizable!

This is impressive but I've always wondered why there is a disconnect in the railfan community. Real locomotives are rusting away at museums in America and there's hardly any money to be had for restoring them. Yet there are plenty of people (including Frank Sinatra back in the day) who have spent huge sums of $$$ and tons of time on models of trains only.

Sad reality is that the costs of restoring prototype locomotives and passenger cars is mind boggling high. A major setback for many groups has been if a desired locomotive or car was donated by the railroad (rare but does still happen) that same railroad will either not want to move it on its rails due to deteriorated mechanical condition, or the railroad's brass is paranoid about liability (CSX is a good example) and the default answer is an automatic "NO". For the railroad that says yes the charges levied are quite high. Moving equipment by over-the-road truck often involves wide flatbeds, city/county wide load permits, route surveys for obstacles, liability issues, etc that, again, involves high costs that even rich celebrities balk at. Imagine paying $100,000 just to properly prepare a deteriorated locomotive to move to a museum facility. Then having to spend an additional $100,000 to restore to "Static Display" condition or spend $1,000,000+ to restore it to mechanical operating condition that is FRA Compliant! Most museums and tourist railroads don't have that kind of capital on hand, which is why they have to be very selective. Hence why in so many cases we've seen beautiful pieces of railroad history either allowed to rot or is cut up for scrap.
