What's the worst is that this clearly overpowered technology like phasing and ion weapon is still laughably bad compared to a nuke with the asgard transporter (range is literally entire planet and deploy time is seconds).

I don't know we have rail gun tech now in the real world would be much easier using their tech than ours.

KR P no they discussed how the Goauld broke the protected planets treaty but the Asgard point out it was the Tollans who attacked Earth and the Asgard would need to interview the Tollans to determine if they were blackmailed in to it and O'Neil says "see that's a problem since the Goauld wiped them out", I will try to find the episode for you.

I remember that episode (SG1 screwed up the sun of protected world by gating through it and the Asgard refused to help fix it) and you are right that they said that but I don't remember if it was before or after the game came out.

The episode is called 'Red Sky' and it aired in 2001, the game came out in 2003.

When it comes to their behaviour they're quite similar. However I'd argue that the fallen empires in Stellaris are way more technologically advanced seeing as they're more advanced than even the ancients in some ways.

Also, it's worth noting that the fallen empires have reached the peak of technology and as such they can't really improve it further. Though maybe a better equivalent to the Tollans would be a regular advanced empire with the isolation civic. Dunno. Perhaps, the requisites for a civilization to begin ascension are never quite made clear. Though it's worth noting that the ancients were technologically far more advanced than the Tollans.

@@blitcut9712 THe "inward perfection" civic, propably, Tollans are willing to establish comms and some basic pact about being chill to each other, but no more. Ascension requires evolution of the species to peak, or advanced technology to "cheat". Ori were able to ascend naturally, while Ancients helped themselves by tech.

I call it the "Precursor Paradox". Basically to reach this level of technology snd stability, you have to overcome your species warrior tendencies. Which leaves you ill prepared against any remotely comparable foe. If you do not do that? You probably wipe yourself out with one of the many innovative options for mass destruction you will develop. It is a common trope in SciFi.

Maybe it's hard to develop revolutionary new weapons technologies, and rebuild your existing weapons systems all the while under threat of global annihilation.

Railguns would work against the Replicators, and also most smaller spacecraft, it's only against the giant ships from later that the railguns lose most of their effectiveness. Also railguns just keep going, they don't dissipate.

Well it didn't help that a season later the ion cannons were rendered obsolete due to Anubis's improved shields that allowed him to overpower the tollan and wipe them to a man. Also the guns were impossible for the SGC to replicate at the time.

yes, but then they got the Asgard computer, which makes it possible to replicate damn near anything. I agree with the OP, they SHOULD have Produced ion cannons for their warships. Imagine the Ion cannons vs non upgraded goa'uld shields, or being used in mass to bombard ORI shields. Or even better Imagine them vs the wraith.. Lol i almost feel sorry for the wraith thinking about that.. In any case they have MANY uses still even if they cant beat Anubis's upgraded shields. I should also mention that it wasn't a case of making goa'uld shields stronger or anything, Anubis used the knowledge to specifically nullify the Ion cannon's effects. Ik the end result is the same but alot of people dont make that distinction and think their is a huge power creep in the series, but their isnt.. Thats why rail guns and missiles can eventually down shields on the Hataks (even if they are shit at the job).

Depends on the nature of the upgrade. If they were just able to absorb more damage then the Tollans would have simply kept firing their ion canons until the Hatak is destroyed. So the logical conclusion would be that the new shields are immune to the Ion cannons and that means they are immune to the very basic concepts the cannons work upon so no refits could work. That means while the Ion cannons are technically stronger than railguns in this case they are completly useless and would only lead to prometheus beeing unable to do damage.

Fall of Asgards was long and detaily explored, it is one of sad but very realistic and illuminating story in SG universe. On the other hand i agree that destruction of Tollans was a waste, and to top it in stupid US army propaganda style.... so they can justify infinite arms race.

Their unique walking through walls tech would have been nice.
