Kurt Russell actually directed this movie, uncredited because apparently it was going to be a lot different and Kurt knew his facts and movies better than the director did and fixed it and he's the reason doc holliday is as great of a character in this movie as he is. Would be no great val kilmer as doc holliday if not for kurt.

Val Kilmer had arguably the best supporting actor performances EVER! I would put it up there with Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men and George Kennedy in Cool Hand Luke. I didn't know that Kurt Russell played a part in just how impactful Kilmer's performances was. I'm glad to know this. It makes me respect Kurt Russell even more! P.S. One of my top 10 movies of all-time is "The Thing (1982)" and Kurt Russell was a big part of that as well. Of course John Carpenter is the main reason. Carpenter is one of the more underrated movie makers ever!

They actually fired the first director and Russell hired the second director to be a front man while he did the actual directing himself. He got the idea from Sylvester Stallone who had done the same thing with the same director. Kilmer's role grew because Russell shrank his character's time on screen to spend more time directing.

The screen writer tried to direct the movie as well, and according to Kurt and Val, it was obvious that as good of a writer as he was, he was not a good director. Kurt convinced him to step back, bring in an experienced director, and make the movie. Kurt, of course played a big hand in directing as well. Co-director, if you will, but uncredited as such.

I can believe that. In the making of Tombstone DVD, Kurt was obviously proud of the efforts towards authenticity. I can see him being in charge behind the scenes.

As a paramedic I have had several patients with TB. A few of them were still smoking when I walked up to them. They were coughing, but not much more than any patient with COPD or CHF. I can 100% believe Doc could have smoked without falling into a coughing fit occasionally.

A few other things, Curly Bill Brocious actually had a mustache like that, you can look up pics of him. Powers Booth looked pretty spot on. The shootout in the creek actually happened, several of the ambushers survived and confirmed how Earp killed Curly Bill. And that Wyatt was not hit even when he walked into the creek. My favorite line in the movie is "Hell, I got lots of friends." "I don't " Kilmer should have won as Oscar for his performance.

Something I always like to mention? This is the 4th film Michael Biehn (Ringo) and Bill Paxton (Morgan) where both in. 1st was Terminator, 2nd was the sequel Aliens, and 3rd was Navy Seals.

"I'm your huckleberry..." Fun Fact: Val Kilmer practiced for a long time on his quick-draw speed, and gave his character a Southern Aristocrat accent. The southern accent is an authentic touch, as Holliday was a cousin (several generations removed) of "Gone With The Wind" author Margaret Mitchell. Western Connection Fact: The excerpt from William Shakespeare's "Henry the V" that is recited by Mr. Fabian is the same passage that Dutton Peabody speaks to himself while walking down the street in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), which I highly recommend. Historical Fact: The line quoted by Doc at the end of the fight at the OK Corral is historically true, and was reported in the Tombstone papers reporting the fight. As extraordinary as the scene is in which Wyatt kills Curly Bill Brocius in the creek, it is true. During the shoot-out in the creek, when Wyatt kills Curly Bill, the next person he shoots is Johnny Barnes. As in real life, Wyatt shoots Barnes in the stomach. However, Barnes was not killed on-site. He managed to escape, and died in a farmhouse. However, before dying, he told the story of how Wyatt really did walk into a hail of Curly Bill's gunfire unscathed, walked right up to Bill, and shot him point blank with both barrels of a double-barreled shotgun.

Just to let you know: the phrase is not "I'm your huckleberry." but "I'm your huckle bearer." A huckle was the name of the handle on a coffin back then. Bearer, as in a pallbearer, is the name of those that carried the coffin. So back in that age a pallbearers was a "huckle bearer."

Very good reaction. Your historical knowledge of Holliday made your reaction that much better. He is credited with 4-6 actual killings. He was incredibly quick on the draw, but he usually fired before taking proper aim. He shot a good number of men, ending confrontations, but not mortally. More often than not, he’d hit legs or feet, even. It was his quickness that made him a legend. Extremely interesting figure in history.

Aside the fact that y'all are so wrong about pickles.....really enjoyed this reaction. Kevin Costner westerns are my top recommendation in this genre: 1. Open Range (with Robert Duvall), 2. Dances With Wolves, 3. Silverado (really young Costner and with Danny Glover, Brian Dennehy and Kevin Kline). 🙂❤

I like how you added your personal tie in to the history of "Doc" Holiday so I will put mine in as well. The saloon where we first see Holiday and he ended Ed Bailey's life (true story) was at Fort Richardson next to present day Jacksboro Texas. "Doc" Holiday met Wyatt Earp at Fort Griffin close to Albany Texas I've toured both Forts and he was mentioned at both.

The best tamales come from the lady that sells them in the grocery store parking lot! So good. Laudenum was often given or prescribed to women for cramps or migraines in those days, unfortunately. Wyatt's common-law wife was an addict, and eventually died from that.

If you hadn't read/heard before...all the mustaches and lightening in the movie were real. My dad had the Criterion Edition of this on Laserdisc. One of my all-time favorite movies.

Historically, Doc told Wyatt to not come back so Wyatt would remember him as he was several months before he died of TB. Kate stayed with Doc to the end. She admired Doc, cared for him, and respected him, but was not in love with him, just as Doc was not in love with her. Both understood that, yet remained together through thick and thin.

I guess they had to keep Ike alive because they wanted to stick closer to his original death. He wasn't killed by the Earps, but years later by a lawman, while attempting cattle rustling, at least according to Wikipedia.

The costumes they wore were Edwardian clothes from England. The western clothes had been scooped up and controlled by the Kevin Costner Wyatt Earp movie. As you stated Doc Holiday's lady was the Hungarian Big Nose Kate. I ate in the restaurant with her name in Tombstone. Wyatt Earp's lady was the Jewish Josephine Marcus. They lived in California where he would talk to actors about the West. She protected his image in the book by Lake and the TV show based on it. This included his friend Doc Holiday. It was great to hear you talk about one of my favorite people.

So for the part where the guy is armed and being slapped - the way the holster is, and with how close Wyatt is, he cannot draw without his arm hitting Wyatt, meaning Wyatt COULD stop him and keep going with the slap. Glad so many people are seeing this awesome movie!

In 1898, Bayer & Co. introduced heroin as a pain reliever and cough suppressant; so the use of Laudanum - which was used back then to treat pain from women's cramps - isn't that crazy of an idea.

By eye witness accounts Wyatt did actually stand rather still during the shoot out at the OK Corral. He had several grazes to his jacket, but no wounds. Theoretically, if you don't move, you just kind of disappear amid the caos. Don't know if there was a pattern to this and how he fought and if that shoot out at the river was accurate too.

Also time is greatly compressed. The gunfight was Oct 1881. Virgil was shot Dec 1881, Morgan was killed Mar 1882, the Vendetta ride was mid Mar to mid Apr 1882. Ringo died July 1882 and Doc died Nov 8 1887.

Miss heard qoutes..."im your huckleberry"... What he actually said was " im your huckle bearer"...in the old west, caskets had handles called huckles...when you carried a person to his grave you were a "huckle bearer"...it has since been changed to a pall bearer

I was about to comment on Wyatt Earp Speaks and you mention it. Kurt Russell directed a majority of this film(uncredited) and it was kept a secret for over a twenty years until Val Kilmer reveal it in an interview

If you ever come to Colorado you can visit Doc Holiday's grave in Glenwood Springs. There is now a new hot spring pool where Doc used to have a shack down by the Colorado river.

Thanks for providing some historical information on Doc Holliday. Many other reviewers don’t even know that this is based on a true story and that the characters were real people, believe it or not. As for the rain scene - I was in Hawaii once and it literally rained on one block that I was standing on and was clear on the next block. No joke, so it is possible. And as far as Ike Clanton is concerned, he does not get killed at the OK Coral or on the run. He actually does get killed in a robbery, as stated at the end of the film.

Next time you watch it, you might want to watch the extended Director's Cut. It explains what happened to Kate, for example. It's about 6 mins longer, but the scenes in it help close off a few plot points.

I'll forever wonder what this movie would've been like, had they not fired the original director and writer, and rewrite some of the script. I watched one western historian, who got to visit the set before the original director was fired, say that he read the original script and if they had made the original movie, it would've been like the Godfather of westerns. He says he still holds hope that someone will get that original script and at least make it into a episodic series.

Pickles are absolutely nasty. My father hated them too, and I remember being a young kid and he told me how pickles are 'disgusting vegetables that are chained to the bottom of the ocean and left to rot.' Yuck. And that actually became a practical joke thing, to slip a pickle slice into his sandwich before left for work. :)
