Today we'll be venturing inside a scrapyard full of former Canadian National, Illinois Central, and BC Rail locomotives. They haven't been there very long, but they probably won't be there much longer. I don't like to disclose locations in order to protect them from thieves and vandals, so please don't ask.

Many of these locomotives have not operated for years. This 2428 for example, I saw a story about it, this model was designed exclusively for CN. They have already been taken out of service and these survived in this courtyard. This video is very good. Congratulations.

They still use some of these series engines out in BC. As an engineer, I can say I didn’t look forward to having to drive these older units, underpowered for the massive trains they build now and the dynamic brakes on them were basically useless. It was a long trip when you had one of these as the leader. Biggest bonus though for a CN unit is they all had a microwave

My dad was a conductor at CN and I remember getting to ride around the yard on his lap in one of these types of engines and in a caboose ( this was the 80’s so they still used them and safety rules were more lax) It’s a super cool memory of mine. They also had a phone on the engine and when he’d call us from the road he’d always blow the train whistle for us

Back in the mid 70s, when I was a technician with CN Telecommunications, I frequently rode freights in Northern Ontario. While usually in the engine, I sometimes rode in the caboose. On one occasion, I had an overnight trip from Foleyet to Capreol and tried sleeping on a bench in the caboose. I was occasionally tossed off by the motion!

I used to be a technician for CN Telecommunications and back in the mid 70s frequently rode freights when I worked in Northern Ontario. I haven't seen the inside of a locomotive since then. BTW, back in those days, when I hopped on or off a train, it was usually moving slowly, as the engineers didn't want to stop the train if they didn't have to. There was one trip where I was taking pictures, while standing under the headlight and the train was traveling at speed. I still have those slides I took.

@@benjlar1902 evidently you know not of what you speak because there are several locomotives built as far back as 1965 that are still in service to this day without issue provided that regular manufacturer specified maintenance is performed. The EMD SD40-2 and EMD F40PH are two prime examples of old power still in use after many years. Hell, there are two axle scale test cars still around today that were built as far back as 1930.... Age means nothing in terms of equipment. It is how well and frequently that it is kept up with that makes the difference. Things made long ago were actually built and manufactured to last. Anymore, things are designed and engineered to fail after a certain amount of use to bring the consumer coming back to buy the "next more advanced model" every so many years. The older tends to be the better and more reliable actually.

It's telling when the Dash 8's are all getting scrapped, while their precursors, the EMD SD40s, are still widely used to this very day. IIRC, a lot of the older GE's had trouble with their turbochargers, resulting in engine fires. An engine fire in the previous generation of GE loco, the C30-7, was a major contributing factor to the Lac-Megantic rail disaster.
