Lyle, the Ajax drill stand, when cleaned up could sell for $45.00 or more by itself on Ebay....Vintage drill stands are very desirable...On the dog tag, that one was issued either just prior or during WWII, judging by it's shape.. I am a Korean War Marine veteran..joined in 1950 and my dog tags are oval in shape..Those issued after about 1952 are more rectangular with a "notch" in one edge...I am almost 86yrs old and I stated work in a machine shop in 1947..I presently have eight lathes, four of which are "suitcase" lathes and one is a 1947 South Bend 9A...One can never have too many tools!!!!! Keep those KZfaqs coming...I thoroughly enjoy them!!!!!

I didnt even know about starrett (I'm a woodworker and dont use that high of quality measurements)before watching your videos. Now I hawk them at auctions and really look for them! Thanks I didnt realize they were high quality.

I think the Mueller drill/tap combination bit is used to make a connection to a pressurized iron water main. A large saddle is placed over the main, the hole is drilled and tapped, then the fitting is installed. There is a gate valve on the bottom and a seal on drive shank at the top that makes this possible. The drive tool was air powered.

Mr Pete you might want to check with Steve Summers and see if he could use all the dull end mills. He has a cutter grinder and is learning how to use it. Would be good stock for him to learn on.

Sometimes its hard to accept that certain people resent other people having fun. A pernicious form of envy I expect. Regardless keep going to auctions Mr. Pete because I feel your joy. On the topic of getting bulk items distributed how about you start a Patreon account to cover the cost of shipping stuff you find. Id contribute to help ship stuff say to some mechanic in the Congo or Philippines or such. Perhaps there's an NGO that could be trusted to help. Float the idea to your viewers se what comes up.

When I saw that dog tag ,my heart jumped too. The serial number on the tag indicates he was drafted in the military and received his tetanus shot in 1956. US stands for inducted (drafted) and RA indicates regular Army (enlisted) . Check out how worn the hole is in the tag, he must have worn that tag a very long time. He is what makes America great. I enlisted in the Army in 1955 and my prefix was RA, however as years went on all that changed. The Army even went to SSN, but that was a dumb idea. Later on , I became an officer and my prefix was O5327###, while the officers that attended places like West Point received the prefix like RA regular army. The joke at the time after the Vietnam war was, non RA were Christmas help and the RIF was on. (reduction in force). I retired in 1975. Thank you for returning that dog tag to the family it will mean a lot. Again thank you Mr. Pete for being so respectful....Ken

love these videos. Great way to wake up on a Saturday with a cup of coffee. Reminds me of getting my grandfathers tools. Some dated back to when he was stationed in the pacific and Japan at the end of WW2. The government issues starrett tools that I still use and cherish.

I am glad you are showing us your auction loot. I have all the tools I can fit in my garage right now. Space is more valuable than more tools . I enjoy participating in going thru your stuff though.

I enjoy auction finds like this. If I were to know what was inside, like you said, I may have bid $ 75. Not knowing and paying $25, what a deal. Good going!!!!!!!!! This was fun to see the cool things you ended up with. If you ever had a garage sale, and sold some of the tools from this lot that you didn't care to keep, you will find that you will get your money back, and that you end up with the things you did liked and kept, you get for free. It's funny how the things we really could care less about, others would give their left arm for, and the things they could care less about, we really want. I believe there are a lot of one armed machinists out there who have ended up with all the cool tools. Thank you for sharing this with us. Michael

Respect to you sir for your reaction to finding the dog tag. I have a son who passes on his worn out to him mechanics tools to me. He remembers when I used to passed on to him my old tools. He remembers the excitement to get any tools as a youth.

Thank you for this tour of your auction loot. When you brought out that S&K toolbox, I thought that looks a lot like my Dad's toolbox even down to the same bent drawerpull. He bought that box when he was just starting out, I have a similarily sized box I bought when I was just starting out...I guess its a kind of rite of passage buying your first toolbox. I greatly enjoy watching these type of videos. It really drives home how little manufacturing was done in the area I am as the area auctions rarely have factory tools of any kind usually it is hobbies or diy stuff and very occasionally tools to support farming but little industrial type tools.

Mr Pete, as a Viet nam combat infantry man I was very sobered by the way you treated the man's dog tag. I think that box and contents are worth $75.00. Thanks for another good video.

Lyle I believe you and I suffer from the same affliction, "can't ever have enough". That drill index is pretty neat. The SK tool box looks like it is olive drab, it makes me wonder if it was made for the military during the war. It certainly not typical SK quality. Not many WWII vets still around all in my family are gone.

Hi Mr Pete, that drill-tap is probably from a Talbot mains pressure water ferrel inserter, from the UK. I wish we had sales similar to yours, boy o boy, do you get some bargains. You know, sometimes, when looking through a collection of old tools like this, it's almost a biography of a mans working years. Broken things that have a memory moment from his youth, perhaps. Sometimes you miss some very worthy tools . I remember chuckling when you came across some German pump pliers, Knipex, I think, they are $65 Canadian around here.. And they are worth it ! And you were about to through them out ! By a man's tools we read a man's life.Keep at it. It's fun to watch.

The Muller drill tap is off a corporation tap machine for water main wet or dry ,can be a hand ratchet type for new work dry or a wet tap machine under pressure.

I paid $50 for a Kenny toolbox full of tools, a Delta floor drill press and a 6 inch Delta table belt sander at an estate sale many years ago. The sander had a 220 volt 3600 RPM 4 HP motor. The motor is on my table saw! You never know what you are going to find at one of these sales.

Neat that you are a Minneapolis Moline fan. One came up for sale near my shop and I wanted to do it but I chickened out. It was propane. Too many projects already

As far a value, and as an experienced Ebay Seller (over 15 years) I estimate $300 to $400 , once the items are cleaned up and put into small lots. The box itself is probably not worth what it would cost to ship. It is easy to determine an items value by looking at Sold Items on Ebay, this will give you the real market value. Sellers can ask any price they want, but the Sold price is golden. You happen to live in an a part of the country where there appears to be plenty of machine related tools. I am in the Sierra Foot Hills of CA and although these kind of items are around, they require a lot of searching and digging and the competition from other buyers can be brutal. I just found an old Power Craft (Logan) 10 x 24 Lathe and am in the process of restoring it. Your videos are very helpful. Thanks again!

WOW ! Mrs Tubal Cain may well be the coolest lady in the world. The box value? If you got it for less than $100 that's pretty good. If you were to resell the items you would make that much surely. The Starrett items alone would fetch a decent price.

I think you did very well on that box. I would have been very pleased at twice the price you paid. I retired from the Army in 1990 and have kept one of my dog tags on my key ring since then. It is a bit bent but still holding up well!

Mr. Pete, In my mind, there is a huge difference between what something would cost (new) and what it is worth to me at auction. 1. I will not pay more than fifty cents on the dollar for anything at an auction new or used. 2. Often what seems a good deal on the surface will be taken home and never used. well if i was bidding on it unseen so to speak like you...i would say, i'll try for 5 bucks no more...which means i will go to 15 but in the heat of it i would be at 25 before i backed off. it's probably worth more easy, but i have so much stuff already. both junk and good. to be truthful i really don't need anything more like that. i can outfit both my kids when i am gone and they will still need to get rid of lots of it. it's just so hard to not pick up well made (possibly) metallurgy though. and that is why i have to thank you sir. i can see yer plunder and enjoy the heck out of you going thru the boxes. i really do enjoy that, and i don't have to hear the wife telling me "what are you going to do with that stuff, yer shop is already overflowing." thank you for sharing.

Just got to this one Mr Pete and yes it's hard to pass some items knowing that the scrap man is the next stop. As I don't have many of your number taps and dies and no American pipe taps or dies then think I would pay your $50 or $100 Australian As a side that tap with drill bit attached. I have a ¾ BSP version. I still remember, was the late 50's in the UK, watching workers setting up and fitting a tapping to a live cast iron gas main. This type of drill tap was hand driven in a rotating assembly, clamped to the underground cast iron pipe. First the hole was drilled and tapped, the assembly head was then rotated and a valve was then screwed in. PS. I do enjoy your videos. If only my instructors had your flair.

If I could pick the box up to get an idea of what the weight as an indication of what was in I would go $100 unopened, just looking at it and not touching it $50. I am like you and enjoy looking through all the goodies I get when i win a lot box of assorted items. Don't let anyone tell you that you need to stop going to auctions, you can never have enough toys. My shop is running over and I am still bringing in more. You do seem to have better sales in your area than we do here in Georgia.

Up here in Canada, I bet someone would ask a couple hundred dollars for that, and would probably settle for $150. Save some of the "garbage" for the meet up when you have it and make a free box. One man's trash, is another mans treasure. I don't think it's going through a mans pockets, I see it more as keeping things alive and your commentary helps us to understand some of the odd ball things that might be in there. I would also forward that dog tag back to the mans family like you said. I don't have any military in my family but if I did, I'm sure I would want it. Great haul! I always get a little remorseful when i go to a auction and buy another mans tools . I think about how many years he saved those tools , and what will happen to mine ? 25 - 45 on the tool box if I couldn't look before hand. BIKERB

I enjoy watching these particular videos of your tool hunts. As to what the box is worth; I believe I would have bid up to $50.00 for the box and maybe even higher If I got Auction Fever while I was bidding. I attend the local flea markets regularly though the Summer months and I see a lot of the small tools that were contained in the box. Usually those tools sell for a dollar each. So, if the contents of the box was priced out at a dollar each, you have struck a gold mine. Problem is; it would take the rest of your days to realize the "gold". You enjoy going to auctions keep going and making videos of them as for the value in Australia a 3/4 pipe tap is (aud $60) $ 45A hacksaw blades start at $3A once again you have got a bargain

Great deal on the tool box hard to find good used machinist tools, mostly hard to find old machinist tools in Michigan too many active mechanical trades people seem to snap them up quickly at full market price. Most of my vintage Starrett tools come from California, New Jersey, or New England states which seem to be de-industrializing rapidly and shop metal working tools do not seem to be highly valued by the estate offspring.

I've spent about a 100 bucks for just a few of the things you found in there. I love the Starrett 3 inch calipers, and spent probably 40 bucks for a set of those. And I still need some button dies in various sizes. You done good in my book. Down in south Texas, there isn't much machinist stuff that isn't oil field left overs, which means beat to death, dull and ruined. I appreciate your emotion on finding the dog tag. I still do that with dad's old tag. And my high school buddy's dad had a loaded Garand clip on his workshop window sill. Full of cob webs and dirt, but just thinking about it gets me.

I believe that is a early car alarm before we got the electronic ones we have now. I also have one of those sirens and it was hooked up as a car alarm when I got it from the wrecking yard where I worked.

The siren was the best part. It would make a funny door bell or horn for your tractor maybe silence it a little. Would like to see a video where with permission you reunite that dog tag and maybe get a story or 2 from the vet who owned it.

The drill and tap with the tapered shank is used with a tapping machine to tap cast iron or ductile water main while under pressure. The tool is advanced into the pipe using a thread which matches the tap and were powered with a hand crank. The tap was removed and the valve installed without removing the machine.

Mr Pete, myself, I love watching these videos. I probably would have bid $40-$50 but I'm in an area like you (eastern Oh Western Pa) so we have lots of auctions like these. I really hope you can reunite the family with the dog tag, I know I would give almost anything to have my dads and if someone just found it and gave it back to me I would break down and cry like a baby for sure!

Recycler is your friend. Dump all that old hardware in the scrap heap and feel good about it. Those Fay pattern dividers and callipers are beautiful items. I picked up a bunch of them new from various retailers a couple years ago when Starrett discontinued them 😢

Your hands became the same dirty color as mines when I need to look trough my old dies taps and so on, with that distinct smell of old oil and grime... ;) Not usually bidding high on used dies and taps, never got good experience unless they were new or so, same on endmills and reamers, those chunks of HSS were a better deal, though... ;)

Love the auctions. Id go 50 ish on the box.. but the cheaper the better. Do the meet and greet at Iron Fest. That way i dont have to drive up there 2 times.. thanks Mr.Pete

The Muller combination drill and tap you got in the machinist tool box probably was used in a Muller hot tap machine used to bore and tap holes in gas or water pipe that were under pressure. The hot tap machine allowed a connection to be made without shutting down a pipeline. As for the price of the toolbox and contents you got as real.

Glad you and Mrs. Pete had some fun on her BD and imagine you are both quite a catch. Happy BD Mrs. Pete! I sure had fun watching this. The box of the wool and paper was a great find. Drawer 2, I think that was a broken Cleko? I might have spent $50 on the box depending how much I spent on other things. I usually give myself a limit on how much I spend overall when I get there and get a feel for whats there. A few good things in the box, but most required a lot of clean up. For some reason the plumb bob spoke out to me...looked old school quality, but how often does one use them anymore. Pretty clear about the files and no file card in the box, but a good lot of them. Forget the complainers by considering the source, they have their mind and place too...I think¿ Felt the emotion on the Dog Tags too. Glad you'll get them back to the family, very kind. I have Dads and his OCS ring, plus my Brat ones...Gkids will get them when I auger in. Thank You for all you bring Mr. Pete!
