I noticed that, should be a 1943 penny, steel due to copper shortage during the war. It didn't seem to come into play with the magnets but as you said a rare coin to put into the puzzle without a reason.
@Cubicdissection
@Cubicdissection 2 жыл бұрын
@@misfittech7743 Yup, they're '43 pennies. While uncommon, they aren't super rare; I think we paid around $20 per roll of 50 coins. The original idea for the puzzle was one where you needed to manipulate the penny with a magnet.

I think this puzzle deserves a 5/5 rating. It's terrific. If tomorrow produces an even trickier puzzle, well, that should receive 5/5, too. It wouldn't make this one any less deserving, or warrant reducing its score to 4/5, or devalue the rating system by applying the Maximum Difficulty score too freely. Surely there's room for all kinds of excellence; there needn't be just one example of it. 😁

Looks like there is history here. That is a “steel” penny or cent … worth $0.01. They were made only during WWII (1943) to save copper. Do the magnets work on the steel penny? …. I just read up and these are the only magnetic (regular-issue) coin from our country. Very nice. And just saw Dominic’s post. Also nice.

Very cool! What a great design! A great idea to put in a silver wheat back penny, to easily see that you're dealing with two different coins! I think it would be fun to really mess with the solvers' heads and use two brand new pennies of the same year and flip one over. P.S. You may want to check the value of that wheat back.

It's a 1943 steel penny. The US mint made them of steel because copper was needed for the war effort. The copper penny could be from any time. Swapping the two pennies is a clever subterfuge. Steel is magnetic, copper isn't. (Unless you want to quibble.)
@simonw3858
@simonw3858 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not really sure what point you are making about steel being magnetic and copper not. Was it in reference to Mr P commenting about the pins being made of stainless steel therefore not magnetic? Because stainless steel Isn't magnetic.
