Wagakki Band is one of the best Japanese groups out there. They combine traditional instruments and vocal styles with modern rock, metal, jazz, and more. All eight members are master level musicians; and their lead singer, the very elegant Yuko Suzuhana, may be the best female Japanese vocalist I have heard. Wagakki Band is the only other Japanese group that comes anywhere close to BabyMetal in international popularity. The video for their song Senbonzakura has more views than Gimme Chocolate. They are even better live, as their stage shows are musical extravaganzas that rival the very best BabyMetal concerts.

@@matthewellis8773 Fuki would be high on my list as well, and both her and Kuroneka certainly have powerful voices. However, what sets Yuko above for me is her ability to transition in and out of traditional shigin and modern vocals so effortlessly.

@@jerrythemagicalllama I often post the same comment on Wagakki Band videos for the same reason I frequently post the same comment about some BabyMetal and Band Maid videos. I do not comment on every video I watch, mostly it is first-time reactions to various groups. My goal is to give the reactors a brief summary of my opinion of the group in just a few sentences. Since it is their first time reacting, it is unlikely that they have seen my previous postings about the group, so why not use it again? My aim is to provide the reactors with a bit of useful information, not to wow the internet with my brilliant comments, because believe me, I do not have any.

have been in Japan for work, many times from 2000 until 2019, and being a big fan of music, I went to see all the possible concerts of Japanese bands of any musical genre. In Japan there is a millennial and very strong musical tradition, especially in percussion, in fact, there are countless schools to learn to play the drums of Japanese tradition, and many schools for Japanese instruments such as shamisen, a 3 or 4 string instrument completely without keys and very difficult to use. Contrary to what happens in the western world, in Japan if you have not done a school, you do not even try to do one thing, this happens for everything, it is part of the Japanese mentality, you cannot cook ramen if you have not had the approval of a master, this generates that in japan the quality of the professionals is incredible, especially in music, if you go to Japan you will be able to listen to incredible bands that play jazz, rock, pop, any type of music, many of these with great influences from the Western music but many others who manage to mix traditional Japanese music with the various genres of Western music, this can create truly incredible atmospheres for the listener. In any case, the average level of Japanese musicians is above any Western musician, simply because of the mentality and pursuit of perfection typical of the Japanese people. So in conclusion, I can tell you that soon you could find Japanese bands that play so that it may seem even absurd, I give you the example of Akane Hirose, she has studied music for years but she has studied the trombone and the violin it seems to me, then she decided to learn the drums and went to study with great masters for only 4 years and now she is the greatest rock drummer of today and maybe she will end up on the list of great all-time. the only real and big problem of Japanese musicians is that the continuous study can drag them into a state of lack of creativity and imagination, forcing them to create music which in the end is only an exhibition of technical ability. There are few Japanese bands that manage to maintain true creativity and a great soul in their music, one of them is certainly Band MaId and Wagakki Band, but I must tell you that if you go to see the concerts in the end you will think that Band-Maid is the best that you can find, most of the Japanese bands are exaggerated in the exposure of the technique and are then boring to listen to in an entire concert, I wanted to write this for some time because I listened to all the concerts of the latest Japanese bands and as I am also a hobby musician I can tell you that in Japan they have a great technique but very little soul, and the only one with the soul is always the incredible Band maid, I have seen, maybe you will think I'm crazy, eleven concerts by the Band-Maid, 9 in Japan and 2 in Europe, and the most incredible ones were in Europe in small theaters where I could be a few centimeters from Saiki and I had to avoid the neck of Kanami's guitar. The instrument you see in this video is the Shamisen, it is very difficult to play and even in Japan few dare, the girl of the Wagakki Band is crazy, it is as if he were jimmy Hedrix multiplied by van Hallen, he does really crazy things at an absurd speed for one instrument with one neck completely without any tone reference. hi, yours is the best channel for music reaction.
@thechikuwa284
@thechikuwa284 3 жыл бұрын
No soul? I disagree with you. >the only one with the soul is always the incredible Band maid, You're kidding me. They're an idol band that follows in the footsteps of "Visual-kei band"(ex. LArc-en-Ciel, LUNA SEA, BUCK-TICK, SIAM SHADE, SOFT BALLET, etc). Visual-kei music was so popular in the 90's and 2000's that Band-maid are a bit old-fashioned for Japanese, but to Westerners who don't know Visual-kei, they seem to be a breath of fresh air. That's why 70% of Band-maids' fans live abroad. I like Band-maid too, but If Band-maid with their strong office promotion are regarded as having a soul, then other Japanese bands are fullfull of soul. >the Shamisen, it is very difficult to play and even in Japan few dare umm...Even kids can play the shamisen in Aomori prefectur and Okinawa prefectur.

the only two ladys in the group are the vocalist Yuuko and Beni, the shamisen player (the thing that looks like a banjo), Asa the bassist often gets confused by a lady, but he just likes to break some stereotypes. the traditional instruments are the koto (it can be compared to a harp), the shakuhachi (a flute made out of bamboo), the taiko (the giant drumset), and as i mentioned before, the shamisen.

I might be wrong but the banjo like guitar is Shamisen, the flute is Shakuhachi, the orizontal harp is Koto and the drum set is Taiko.

Your pronunciation of the band name is very good. "Wa" means "Japanese" and "gakki" means "instruments". Likewise, "wagyu" means "Japanese beef/cattle", "washi" = "Japanese paper", "washoku" = "Japanese cuisine", etc. "Wa" is 和 in kanji.

@@MetalGuitarTimo It's a different "wa." This one uses kanji, while the particle does not.
@saldiven2009

@@MetalGuitarTimo "Wa" is just the English transliteration. Japanese has LOTS of homonyms; like their, there, and they're in English. In Japanese, they use different symbols for it. The topic particle pronounced "wa" is は. Kanji can have multiple different pronunciations depending on context. 和 can be pronounced "wa"but also several other ways; it means Japanese style or peace. 輪 is pronounced "wa," and usually means ring, like a ring on your finger or similar. 把, 羽, and 話 can likewise be pronounced "wa." Japanese writing, from the perspective of a native English speaker, really complicated.

This is a great introduction to the Wagakki band. They’ve been around about 8 years as a band. The lead singer, Yuko Suzuhana is legendary in Japan for roles in Anime and Vocaloid. Their first release as the Wagakki Band was “The Story of Six Trillion Years and One Night.” “Ten Thousand Cherry Trees” is another early monster hit. The band is 100% Japanese, but half the band play traditional Japanese instruments and half modern ones. (Look again at the drummers.) Oh, the instrument Kanade plays is a shamisen.

I listen to a lot of Japanese music because that scene is vibrant right now. There is a lot of creativity and different sounds going on right now. If you like punk, try out Mutant Monster. For metal, Aldious and Lovebites. And for straight rock, One OK! Rock. They're all great and different.

God willing, when the world regains some stability, they'll do more shows in the US again.

I saw this some days ago... its really great...crazy great ... (You should really react to Band-Maid's "Gion-Cho" or "Secret MAIKO Lips" ... I say this because they incorporated some traditional instruments (like the tsugaru shamisen (the japanese banjo!), here played by Ninagawa Beni) in those songs and played them as "Band-Maiko") :-D ... great stuff! Japan... so many good things...

Wow, you finally found Wagakki Band! They've been a favourite for quite awhile now, and this instrumental intro is a great way to see their chops. As for the bass player, the parents will have a gender reveal party for it as soon as they figure out what they have... Seriously, he's a he lol. One thing I really like about this band is their aesthetic sense - I can't stop admiring their style as much as their music. I'd also recommend checking out their Senbonsakura (spelled completely wrong) official music video, one of the best MVs I've ever seen. Cheers :-)

Glad that you like them, i discovered the band about the time you posted this video. I've never seen this video until now. I was just blown away by this band, these guys are good. Beni can shred a guitar just as well as or maybe better than the greats. The band is better live than in the studio. Here's one of their songs that i think that you might like~ "Hoshizukiyo", Live at Heian Jingu 2017. The first part of that video, Homura, i really enjoy, it's so awesome and dynamic.

The song is actually about Japan's youngest emperor Emperor Mutsuhito who ruled Japan at the age of 15. The lyrics are the things that happened during his days as emperor where the Americans came to break down Japan's isolation circle and to trade with them. They also threatened young Mutsuhito that if he didn't open the trading systems they will destroy Japan. For a young boy, Mutsuhito is recognized as one of the greatest emperors Japan ever had he had the knowledge of ruling and politics so he knows what to do at some times. He lasted until 1912 (He was born in 1852)
