Alien, forms train: body structure, foundation alignment and mechanics; flexibility, explosive power, cardiovascular conditioning and overall conditioning... and lastly individual fighting techniques. Because forms are anywhere from 24 to 128 or more techniques strung together. Often in smaller batches of 3. Because fighting isn't someone throws a strike and you block and hit... done. But I'm getting ahead. Because as Joseph pointed out: None of that matters much if you don't do continuous sparring. Preferably working up to medium full contact with no protection except for light gloves and groin. Real Kung Fu won't look like the forms. It will look like basic MMA, Muay Thai or Kickboxing with throws. So who do we do the forms, right? Because they're fun. Lol nah I mean that is honestly part of it but really because they're an excellent solo practice. Because they train all those things I listed above and more. They're shadowboxing that keeps tradition passed on from 300 to in a few cases a thousand years ago. They're excellent conditioning with techniques built in. Very efficient. Got to do realistic 2 person drills and hard continuous sparring though. Else you're just doing moderate gymnastics.

+Teddy Fuse Okay, these were two Kung Fu masters. Not a situation which provided either with a lot of opportunity for fancy moves or pretty flourishes. Regardless, if you had stepped into that ring, I seriously doubt you would have lasted even a minute with either of them. Same with your "untrained street fighters."
@Cooliefuse28
@Cooliefuse28 8 жыл бұрын
***** I'm not talking about "fancy moves" or "pretty flourishes". I'm talking about combat efficiency. I could care less for pretty jump kicks and movie fighting. Also, I have trained Kung Fu for 2 years, Boxing for 2 years, and Muay Thai for a half of a year, and from what I see here, I could more than hold my own with both of them. I understand that fighting isn't pretty neither is it supposed to be, but a Kung Fu master should be one of the most efficient regarding combat, they lack even the most basic of skills. It's really underwhelming to me. If you see any dangerous and effective strikes or good techniques then please shed some light on what's going on in the video.

Sean Russell whoa. wait a second. Not a fair analogy since Cung Le studied practical martial arts like sanshou, kickboxing and grappling. Not hokey five animal styles, or other styles imitating monkeys, mantids, and snakes. Humans need to learn to fight as humans. Trying to imitate tigers and cranes is pointless since we are not built like that for starters. We have different physiology and reflexes and different Kinetics. That's why people who study stylized martial arts with difficult stances and poses deteriorate into haymaker punches and fighting like little children because they have never learned the punches optimized for humans like a jab and right cross. Let's also establish some parameters. First many Kung Fu people want to disown this vid as bad Kung Fu but look at the news coverage, look at the crowd. Sorry but this clip represents typical Hong Kong Kung Fu in the 50's. Now go look at the Helio Gracie vs Kimura fight around the same era. They fight exactly how they trained in their style. They don't toss it all out the window. Why? Because their styles work because it's optimized for human Kinetics. Before you think I'm dumping on Kung Fu I did it for many years. wing chun and Northern mantis and sport wushu. I still love it as they are beautiful to watch but let me assure you that kickboxing and BJJ are far more effective for real fighting. I've done them all so I have cred to criticize. There's a reason why the late James Coburn - friend, student, and collaborator of Bruce Lee - said that the last time he spoke to Bruce Lee about martial arts that Lee referred to Hong Kong Kung Fu as "shit" and told Coburn he preferred Japanese grappling arts and specifically mentioned judo, jujitsu, and aikido. If you think I'm making this up Google James Coburn + Hollywood Interview + Bruce Lee and you'll find the article. But brace yourself as you'll never be able to watch The Chinese Connection, or Return of the Dragon the same again knowing that the god of Kung Fu Bruce Lee denounced Kung Fu and preferred Japanese grappling styles, and boxing.

The problem isn't the practitioners but the way in which many Kung fu practitioners train. Some train so hard with so little sparring that they never actually develop any fighting instincts. Not to say that Kung fu is an effective art, it is very effective when trained correctly. But years of punching air will get you no where quickly in a street fight.

There's a Bruce Lee audio conversation with friend and student Dan Lee that starts with him recounting some Tai Chi/kung fu competition/ tournament/fight/whatever he went to, I think with some foreign friends, which I took to mean they had no idea what they were supposed to be seeing, and seeing it, sounds like Bruce was pretty fucking embarrassed for his art and his people. AMAZING VITAGE FILM. At :40 sec. you can see Eagle Claw Master Lau Fat Man showing Eagle Claw techniques with a partner. The later fight has produced some controversy. Many have said that the the Masters (a Tai Chi and a White Crane Master) are very sloppy. Doesn't look like the movies. Let's look a little deeper. Perhaps compared to modern tournament or cage fighting without the western boxing footwork, to the untrained eye may indeed look sloppy. Keep in mind, these were Kung Fu Masters trained to down their opponents with one or two shots. but not necessarily athletes or trained fighters. This was a Lei Tai stage type fight, no protection or rules often used for challenges between school and Masters. Lot's of gambling. Notice right at the first exchange that the Crane fighter has his nose broken and is bleeding seen throughout. Also, notice the several connections made with these long range powerful strikes which are typical of a White Crane fighter. All in all, it's pretty brutal. Manny of the Crane fighters techniques resemble Choi Lay Fut which might actually be taught under one roof. So sloppy? Perhaps considering what we are used to seeing. I find it fascinating to note that the Tai Chi Master was the more violent of the two. I assure you that if one of those long arm punches actually reaches your jaw, it's gonna leave a mark. I have fought full contact with my Si Fu quite a bit. He broke my nose and dislocated my jaw. Then taught me Iron Palm. He was ruthless, merciless and in very little ways resembled this. But great to see Lau Fat Man moving.

It is a fight between a taichi and a white crane master(if they trully are). They had an argument about kung fu philosofy and they decided to solve the argument like this. At first the match would be to the death but the authorities did not accepted this and it was decided that the match would be over when one was down. Eventually the was draw with no winner. Thiw is how "masters" were fighting then. It looks silly. No one would be fighting like this today. However if u watch muai thai fights in 1920's u will see something simular to this. The sparring technique influenced martial arts a lot and they more refined

You do not want to look at the muay Thai fight in the 20’s. Fighter get kill on stage. Some lethal muay Thai moves was ban by Thai King after one fight between Thai and Combudia in 1929 that the Combudia fighter was kill. Without those lethal moves, Muay Thai has to train themselves in such hard conditions to suits the ring fight. By the way, l’m not Muay Thai. I ‘m not making up the story. When Thai King get involved, it must be a officer record, check it out. One more thing, l am disappointed that the Combudia Muay Thai fighters are not live up to their skill level in the pass.
