Suede - Wild Ones, 10 September 1996. Dublin, Tivoli Theatre. Concert recorded for MTV Live 'N Direct.(4/6)
Suede are an English alternative rock band from London, formed in 1989. The group's most prominent early line-up featured singer Brett Anderson, guitarist Bernard Butler, bass player Mat Osman and drummer Simon Gilbert. By 1992, Suede were hailed as "The Best New Band in Britain", and attracted much attention from the British music press. The following year their glam rock-inspired debut album, Suede, went to the top of the charts, became the fastest-selling debut album in almost ten years and won the Mercury Music Prize, helping kick-start the Britpop movement. However, the band's lush follow-up, Dog Man Star (1994), saw Suede distance themselves from their Britpop peers. Although it is often regarded as the band's masterpiece, the recording sessions for Dog Man Star were fraught with difficulty, and ended with Butler departing the band after heated arguments with Anderson.
In 1996 following the recruitment of Richard Oakes and later keyboardist Neil Codling, Suede went on to greater commercial success with Coming Up. The album charted at number one in the UK, producing five top ten singles and became their biggest-selling album worldwide. In 1997, Anderson became addicted to crack and heroin. Despite problems within the band, Suede's fourth album Head Music (1999) was a British chart-topper. Suede's final album, A New Morning (2002), their first after the collapse of Nude Records, was a commercial disappointment, and the group disbanded the following year. After much speculation Suede reformed in 2010 for a series of concerts.

It's 100% Butler composition (the music played by the guitar) so better give BB the credit of them huge sounding riffs, but Richie's one of a kind as a replacement guitarist who nailed Butler -pieces perfectly it's ridiculous, and soon find the way to stand on his own feet. Brett and the rest of the guys were super lucky they got him so soon after Bernie left.

He was eventually able to imitate what Bernard did on record very well but Bernard was/is an instinctual musician. If we had got to hear Bernard play these songs live it wouldn't have sounded like the record because he never did anything the same way twice. He poured his heart and soul into that album and went to a very vulnerable place to create this music. Can't imagine what it's been like for him having someone else play his songs that he wasn't able to play himself.

@@sunny70299 Hmm.. interesting. Can't say I agree nor disagree with you really, you've made some great points though. However I can't tell myself who's better (my favourite that is) - they're both great in their own way but share many similarities as well it sometimes confuses me, especially regarding how Oakes first was able to fill the biggest boots in British rock a the time at ridiculously young age and short span of time to prepare and has since evolved as a songwriter/riff-maker as well. But I also have this super-respect for Butler, being involved in some of their greatest tracks during his era, and what album Dog Man Star is. Still I prefer Bernards' work with for Suede to anything he's done since it's maybe the first solo that comes near to Butler-Suede standards. Just my opinion though. And The Tears weren't as good as I hoped even though I don't hate it either, I expected as much more by Anderson/Butler team, yet it was lukewarm at best. Btw. Did you know there's some of those Dog Man Star -era live performances with Bernard available in youtube as well? They might jsut prove what you said about him as a guitarist and as an artist.

@ChainNonSmoker Yes I cherish those performances. I know Bernard has started playing some of the Dog Man Star tracks live recently and said he poured his soul into those songs and then almost had them taken from him so it was important to claim them again. Edit His two most recent albums with The Anchores and Jessie Buckley are brilliant and better than anything Suede have produced since Coming Up. His recent Mercury nomination speaks for itself.
