#7 Trailer Tips. Ask your horse, what is it like to ride in the back of a horse trailer. I've done it and it teaches you much about how rough the ride is, how loud the trailer is bouncing across expansion joints, pot holes and road alligators rumored to be retreads. If what you haul in your trailer is important, you should look at air ride axles. What Transwest has is a complete suspension with a torsion axle with air bags and even shocks. It's hoofs floating on air. All trailers need shocks, but few have them in this country. Torsion flex axles do the main work, the air bag cushions the ride and the shocks control the rebound. With this set up also, you can have an equalized suspension were all the axles work together to let the tires stay on the ground like leaf springs or semi-trucks with air suspensions on their trailers. Torsion axles are popular on horse trailers but they are all independent, front to back and left to right. Each axle is on it's own, no help from the neighbors. Air ride recommended by farm animals. I understand where the comment comes from about the old days of Air Ride and bag issues, but I have been driving Semi for 34 years and have not blown a bag in 20, ya just need to use name brand. Can I ask to see a test to show how a modern Air Ride compares to this. Having the Torsion restrict what the bags can do doesn’t look right. The shocks are almost horizontal, and using double convoluted old style bags just to fit in the space. Have they ever used the Ridewell Model 244 8k air ride? That is just a smaller version of what we use on a semi, and with the four inch drop axle, it fits under such trailers. Going from Spring to Torsion is an up charge, then another up charge with an add on Air Ride. Why not just go with the Commercial Air Ride from the start? I am having a new trailer built and going right to the Ridewell from the start in a Tandem setup.

It's a Dexter hybrid axle, not sure what the brand is. The Torsion is still the suspension, the air bags cushion the trailer above the axles. I've ridden in the back of these trailers and it's like standing on a trampoline. Very nice. Still, rather spend money on a full air ride like Ridewell for this trailer in a 8k 3axle setup.
