Check out Eric's song "Wonderful Tonight" another song written by him for Patti Harrison, this one will get your lady to love you. Back in the 60's and 70's there was signs around London claiming "Clapton is God" no arguments here about that one. What a lot of people also don't know is that the opening riff of this song came from Dwayne Allman, another great guitarist. Layla is my daughters name by the way, yes after this song 💖💖💖

So background on the song. Layla refers to George Harrison's wife at the time (Patti Boyd) Eric Clapton was madly in love with her, and wrote this song. Since she and George were breaking up he was okay with it. Patty and Eric eventually got married. And George attended the wedding George and Eric remained friends till the day George passed away. BTW, on the last night of his life, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton had a cutting contest. ( cutting is basically a guitar duel) it is on KZfaq you have to look for it, but it was obvious by the end that Eric knew he had been beaten. It was quite a fitting way for Stevie to go out. ..

Google the story behind this one. Clapton fell in love with his friend George Harrison’s (The Beatles) wife and wrote this song for her. He eventually married her. And yes, you’re tearing up because it’s THAT good. There’s so much emotion in this song - you can feel how much he wants this woman. ❤️

I love this performance. This wasn't on the playlist. That's how you keep your band on their toes. That's why you see all them staring at him in the beginning. They didn't know where he was going. Then only had a second to figure it out. When he cranked out the intro. Love the guitar and piano at the end. Love it so much I named my daughter after this song.

YOU HAVE TO HEAR "WONDERFUL TONIGHT" from 24 nights. That was one of my hubby's favorites. The last concert we went to together was in Cleveland. The Blues . Stevies brother Jimmy opened for him and it was amazing. All Blues. Main floor center 11th row. I read something that said after his son tragically died falling out of a window of a high rise building he quit writing. Just couldn't do it any more. Then when the movie Rush was being made his buddy asked him to help write the main song for the soundtrack and while writing the song Tears in Heaven he was able to deal with and come to terms with the loss!

The, Clapton giving his seat up for SRV and the they had never met, portions of your story are not true. The only truth to any of this story is that Stevie died in a helicopter crash and that Clapton beat dope and visited Stevie in rehab(they’d known each other for years prior) and provided motivational support. I don’t know if Clapton is cool? I don’t make assumptions. Sounds like you were told the Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Big Bopper story. The SRV story is that Stevie, Jimmie & Connie Vaughn were told that 3 seats had been reserved for them on one of the four helicopters being used that day. When the Vaughn’s got to “their” helicopter, Claptons agent, body guard and asst. tour manager were inside buckled up, with only one seat vacant. Jimmie & Connie are still with us today. How the story ended is self explanatory, tragic and now history. During the deposition of the wrongful death lawsuit the Vaughn’s won years later, we were told that Stevie had offered Robert Cray the fourth seat. Whether the Cray story is true or not, I don’t know. I do know it’s irrelevant and it’s what we were told.

My top 5 guitarist list has at least a few dozen players in it these days, there's just too much goodness. The original studio version of Layla features another young guitar legend that didn't make it to 25. Duane Allman was an incredible slide guitarist for the Allman Brothers, whom I'm betting you'll get to at some point. It's awesome getting to see someone learn about the greats!

a top 5 is so general. david Gilmour (pink floyd) is number one for me, but as an emotional guitarist, not technical as such. Clapton, for his longevity, so many classics, is in the top 10 maybe. but im not a guitarist. most great guitarists can do what they all do, but thinking of it, writing it is a different thing.like in this video, the guy playing the catchy guitar tune, isnt Eric, its the balding guy next to him, yet whats his name? who knows :)
